I’ve been a fan of Robert Crumb’s comics for a long time before ever watching one of his animations and I’m glad to see that the same energy, raunchiness and provocativeness that characterizes his comics was not lost in this film. Ralph Bakshi being a director was definitely a plus since I’m a fan of his too, I was surprised to find out that Robert Crumb and Ralph Bakshi did not get along at all during the production of this film. At first watch I’ll admit this was somewhat hard to follow, most people might get lost on the funny characters and bold colors but this film goes deeper than that. At its core it’s a satire focusing on American college life of the era, race relations, and the free love movement, and serves as a criticism of the countercultural political revolution and dishonest political activists. There’s a certain realness to this film that is hard to capture in animation, it’s no surprise that the film contains scenes featuring documentary recordings of real conversations in place of scripted dialogue giving the characters a sort of “life of their own”. Honestly I thought this movie was great although certainly not everyone’s cup of tea.
