(3) The relations with parents can be described by the extent of closeness with Mom or Dad. One’s feeling scale can be described by the extent of how you feel people dislike you;
(4) A hypothesis is made as follows: The extent of closeness with Mom is negatively correlated with the extent of how one feel people dislike him/her. Codebook 16 - Variable H1WP9 and Codebook 10 - Variable H1FS17 are selected for analysis.
Literature review:
Birditt et al. (2009) studied the relationship between tensions in the parent and adult child relationship and their links to solidarity and ambivalence. Tensions in the parent and adult child relationship is the independent variable, and links to solidarity and ambivalence is the response variable. The authors found that tensions regarding the relationship were associated with lower affective solidarity and greater ambivalence. Dixson et al. (2014) designed an instrument to investigate expectations about and experiences of the parent-child relationship: the Parent-Child Relationship Schema Scale. The Parent-Child Relationship Schema Scale not only presents an efficient way of looking at expectations and experiences of the parent-child relationship. The PCRSS offers researchers a powerful tool to use in their exploration of this key and long-lasting relationship. Stafford et al. (2016) examined parent-child relationship quality and positive mental well-being using Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development data. Positive mental well-being is the response variable and parent-child relationship is the independent variable. They found that greater well-being was seen for offspring with higher combined parental care and lower combined parental psychological control. They also suggest that both mother–child and father–child relationships may have short and long-term consequences for positive mental well-being.
