Design Rationale
My topic for this project is Ecological Footprints. I personally think that my poster successfully advocates my topic because it has clear graphics that represent the topic, and they are graphics that you can easily tell what they are and how they relate. It also has a larger quote/statistic that catches your eye along with a line graph that also catches your eye and makes you want to know what it is about. I think that the overall type and image relationship really correlate with each other because for the title I chose a very bold font that catches your eye, and it takes up the majority of the top of the poster. For the sub headers I used a less bold font than the title to still catch your eye and help you to know it is a header for a topic. For the text I chose a non bolded readable font just to get the point across while displaying the information. I think that the fonts that I chose do make the text on my poster legible and readable for the audience and they help to guide the eye around the page while engaging them. I think that if someone was walking by my poster, they would be able to retain the information quickly because there is enough information to get the point across but not overwhelm. There are also a few statistics on it and people often retain more information and are more interested in the topic when there is a statistic that speaks to them personally or moves them.
It was a little bit longer of a process to get to the layout that worked best for it, but I think that it was worth it. My original wireframes were more for an informational graphic poster, so I came up with a few more ideas and totally changed the look and layout of it. I came up with more graphics and a different kind of setting. I also added a sidebar and a section on the bottom for statistics and a line graph. The layout and graphics were moved around a lot until it was easily readable, and it guided your eye in the right direction based on the information and what order that it is meant to be read in. The colors that I chose stayed consistent throughout the whole changing everything around process. I think that researching and going through all the steps did help me organize everything better because the information that I decided to put on my poster were in different sections, so I was able to organize it that way and have the audience read the sections one by one and not be too overwhelming. Throughout the process, critique did help me a ton because there was something that I changed each time we had critique and I think that other people’s inputs and ideas helped my poster to be easily read and have a creative look to it. The feedback I gained from it really helped to shape my design into what it is. I enjoyed using illustrator again this semester for the process of my poster and it really helped to pull everything together.

· Takeaways for the audience
· Audience: 17/18-35/40 (new homeowners/new families/people growing up)

What is an ecological footprint?
· The only metric that measures how much nature we have and how much nature we use
· Adds up all the productive areas for which a population, a person or a product competes
· Measures the ecological assets that a given population or product requires to produce the natural resources it consumes and to absorb its waste, especially carbon emissions
· Measures how fast we consume resources and generate waste compared to how fast nature can absorb our waste and generate new resources
Biocapacity
· Represents its biologically productive land and sea area, including forest lands, grazing lands, cropland, fishing grounds, and built-up land
· Also represents the productivity of its ecological assets
· These areas, especially if left unharvested, can also serve to absorb the waste we generate, especially our carbon emissions from burning fossil fuel
· The biocapacity per person is determined by how many hectares of productive area there is, how productive each hectare is, and how many people (in a city, country, or the world) share this biocapacity
About ecological footprints
· Can be calculated for a single individual, city, region, country, or the entire planet (put a link or qr code to footprint calculator)
· When a country’s biocapacity is greater than its populations ecological footprint, on the other hand, the country boasts and “ecological reserve”
What you can do to reduce your ecological footprint
· Transportation
o You can bike, walk, or follow public transportation when possible
o If you don’t own a car you reduce your footprint by as much as 20%
· Energy saving gadgets at home
o Opt for energy efficient appliances and dispose of used ones safely
o Ensure ceilings and walls are well insulated and maybe use double pane windows
· Make habits energy efficient
o Use less air conditioning in the summer and keep thermostat lower during winter
o Unplug electronics when now in use
o Dry clothes outside instead of the dryer
o Defrost your freezer and fridge when you can
· Foods you buy
o Shop at a local farmer markets rather than the supermarket
o Local in season foods at the farmers market don’t travel long to get to you
o Go for foods without much plastic packaging
o Grow your own fruits and vegetables
o Eat one meatless meal a week (vegetarians have half the ecological footprint, you don’t have to become a vegetarian, just go meatless once in a while)
o See if you can buy a cow locally and buture it locally maybe split it with a family (stock up on meat and package it yourself, don’t have to use disposable plastic)
· Use less water
o Take shorter showers or turn water off when washing
o Turn water off when brushing teeth
o Washing care less often and take it to a car wash instead
o Run washing machine and dishwasher only when full
o Avoid disposing paints, medicines, and other pollutants down your sink

I really think that my magazine spread of Jonathon Hoefler came a long way and I am proud of the final product. I am proud of the layout itself and how organized and almost symmetrical it is. I just think that it gives it a clean look. I think that splitting his picture in half and putting it on the outside really helped the organization of it because I didn’t have as much empty space to figure out where to put the words and other graphics. I also think that bold parts in each corner really grab your eye but also makes it look organized. I think that having so many sketches and wireframes really helped execute ideas because I had ideas from multiple sketches that I sorta combined to make the final. Also making a copy of my original and changing it up also helped me to see the development of my ideas and helped me see what went well where and what created good hierarchy. I think that my spread successfully portrays hierarchy, alignment, balance, space, and balance. I definitely think that I grew as a designer during this process because I really learned more about layouts and how to organize them and how moving one small thing in your layout can change the whole thing. I also learned that is it okay to try out different techniques and ideas to see which ones look the best. I didn’t realize how much organizing took place for making a magazine layout like this and I truly feel that I learned a lot in the process not only about the designer I was assigned but the assignment itself and InDesign.

Found Objects Project

For the construction of my project, I first cut out the letters of each piece of bread and then toasted them longer and longer for each piece. I then placed them in order and arranged the crumbs around the pieces. Elements of how I constructed the piece don’t really have an impact because I just used either a white piece of paper for the background or my desk. I also just photographed it in my room just looking for a good background. I think that the type really represents my objects well because they’re more of a square shape in the first place and the letters are also more square. It was much easier to make the letters more square and less flowy because the bread was a little harder to carve. For the text I was going more modern relying more on geometric shapes rather than anything from the Lupton textbook. I think that this assignment really helped to show what kind of text goes with specific objects and settings. It really wasn’t difficult at all and it was a fun process. I think that thinking of a word and describing it through objects is a really good project prompt.

These are my ideas for the found objects project. For the project I am planning on going with the toast idea with the words burn carved into the bread and the pieces gradually get more burnt. I plan on having some kind of wood or plain white background and having crumbs around the pieces.

Jonathon Hoefler Research
Where are they from? When were they born? (life dates)
· Born on August 22, 1970 in New York City (currently 52 years old)
· “During his childhood, Hoefler was especially fascinated by codes and ciphers of all sorts – whether ship signal flags, semaphore or Morse code” (Riecher, Angela)
Talk about their career. Where did they work? Were they a graphic designer as well?
· Hoefler is a typeface designer and an armchair type historian who specializes in the design of original typefaces.
· Named one of the forty most influential designers in America by I.D. Magazine
· His work includes award winning typeface designs for Rolling Stone Harper’s Bazaar, the New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and Esquire
· His best-known work is the Hoefler Text family of typefaces designed for Apple Computer and now appearing everywhere as part of the Macintosh operating system
· Largely self-taught and at the age of 19 he worked with magazine art director, Roger Black
· Soon formed the Hoefler Type Foundry in 1989 in New York
· At the beginning of his career in 1999, he began working with Tobias Frere-Jones, another typeface designer, and changed the company name to Hoefler & Frere-Jones
· They had disagreements and ended up splitting and Frere-Jones claimed that he cut him out of the multi-million-dollar business while Hoefler explained that Frere-Jones was never more than an employee and Frere-Jones eventually sued him
What typefaces did they design?
· Two main texts he is known for are requiem and Hoefler text fonts
· Hoefler & Co boasts how they have, “designed some of the most popular and influential typefaces of our time, including Gotham, Knockout, Mercury, Sentinel, and Archer” (Fonts by Hoefler&Co)
· While working with Tobias Frere-Jones, they created the very famous typeface called Gotham for GQ
· He created 47 published typefaces, comprising 1,113 font styles
What design movement were they practicing during?
· When he started his company, it was during the Memphis design movement
What were the characteristics of their typefaces?
· Usually bold, direct, futurism, high-contrast san serifs, some had softer edges and rounder corners, very readable,
How did they design their typefaces? Traditionally? Digitally?
· Digitally
Did they have a legacy as a type designer? What/Who did they impact?
· Hoefler is still impacting peoples lives and still designing new type faces today. He has a website where you can purchase guides on how to make your own typefaces and he has many type faces published on there for you to download and use
· Hoefler has a pretty big legacy, and his company has continued to grow over the years either working with partners or creating these typefaces solo
Any other information that is interesting or beneficial to them?
· Designed the typeface for the 2020 presidential election for Biden and Harris and all their campaign materials
· Has an episode on the Netflix series called “Abstract” and he got nominated for an Emmy because of this episode
· Created a new type face for NYC pride and for all its materials
Post an image of them. (Keep source of image to cite)

Type Exercises Part 4

For part 4, I think that I visually created a sense of hierarchy with the different sized fonts that I used to guide the eye around the page, and also the color that I used. For the text I used Helvetica because I thought that it was a pretty straight forward font but was also very clean and easy to read. I made my initials larger so you look at that first and wonder what it is. Then I made the phone number and location smaller so you wonder what its for. I also put my website at the top and bottom just for a border approach but it also takes your eye around the page. The only thing was I had a little trouble figuring out what to put in the space but still thought it was a good layout.

Type Exercises Part 3

In this exercise, the typographic treatment expresses the word I chose in two different ways. I chose the word blend and I blended the actual letters some and also played around with the color to make the greys and whites blend together. I think the spacing makes sense because the word is blend so the letters are very close together and the colors also make sense to communicate what the word means. I think the only thing that was a little challenging was thinking of words to use and how you could really express the word through spacing, sizing, layout, and colors.

Type Exercises Part 2

The letters that I chose for part two were my initials. This changed how I related their forms because I kind of thought about maybe using them for the future to put on any work that I want my signature or initials on. I kind of did a diagonal figure going down and across the page and also blended them to make it look more like a shape taking up space instead of letters on a page. I did learn a little more about composition during this because it helped me to think about the different ways letters can be placed together and still be aligned and have good composition. I think this exercise really opened my mind of the different ways to arrange these different forms because there are so many different ways that I didn’t think of beforehand and I was about to play around and open my mind more.

Type Exercises Part 1

For part one I chose the letter R because I thought that it was a less symmetrical and thought maybe it would be more of a challenge to work with it and see a different way of how it could take up space. I moved it around a lot to see where I wanted to place it on the page and also which way I wanted to turn it. I came to the conclusion of turning it on its side and putting it in the bottom right corner and I think that it works well there. This exercise did change a little bit of how I relate to letters because it helped me to see the different ways they can take up space, how much space they can take up, and the amount of ways you can place them on the page.

Hi! I’m Liv. I am a junior with a major in Art and a concentration in Photography and a minor in graphic design with thoughts of picking up another minor in Art History or Museum Studies. I take pictures for sports here at Brockport and I love the digital aspect of it all. Editing is my favorite with seeing how the pictures came out and how I can make them look even better. I use lightroom a lot for that which is another adobe program. I used that and photoshop a lot in Digital Photography last semester and would always used my skills from Graphic Design in that class! I took intro to graphic design last semester with Jen and I actually really enjoyed it! I learned more than I ever thought I would and was very proud of the progress I made throughout the course. I am very excited to learn more about Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign this semester and see how much more progress I can make!
This picture just shows a little bit of my sports photography but also a composite I made for one of my Digital Photo projects!

I have always had a love for nature and the environment, and that is how I came up with the topic of deforestation. It is so important for the environment and for the future generations to recognize how much of an issue that deforestation is and that is why I came up with Desist from Deforestation. The main audience of this campaign is college students because I believe that the semi younger generations will be more inspired to help out because they are the ones growing up with this issue and they will have to live with it in the future. With the use of a poster, a brochure, t shirts, mugs, and tote bags, the word will get spread and it will give enough information for these students to dig deeper into the problem, get more educated on it, and want to see what they can do to help.
Deforestation is a big issue that can affect not only our lives but the lives of plants, animals, and our ecosystems. Putting websites and links on the poster and the brochure helps to really advocate and push them to donate. The statistics and information on the brochure and poster also help to realize how bad the issue is and get somewhat more educated with it. The system of this advocacy campaign and the materials really gets the audience involved and grabs their attention.
Visually with the materials, the colors I feel helped to grab the attention but also keep it simple, so they aren’t totally the main focus. I also kept the colors to go with the theme, making them all have a natural look to them, so the audience doesn’t think of something else while they are looking at the materials. The icons and logos I also feel like really go with the theme of the campaign but again, I wanted to keep them simple, so the audience wasn’t just focusing on them. The icons also help to grab the attention because that is usually what people see first, and once they see them, they’ll want to see what the campaign is about and read the text that goes with it. For the main logo, I wanted to keep it simple and by doing this it once again makes the reader want to know what it is for and make them want to know more about it. The text and font also help to grab the attention with the title being in the biggest font, the statistics being in a medium sized font and less bold, and the informational text being in the smallest font and not bolded. The statistics on the brochure and poster also help to grab attention of the audience. All of these small details on the materials really create a voice for the campaign and show the message it is trying to get across.
As a creator, the process was tough at first trying to figure out the details of everything and putting together a look but as time went on it slowly became easier, and I was happier with how everything was getting laid out and coming together. Picking out the colors wasn’t very tough because I knew I wanted that natural theme and the mood board helped a lot with that. My ideas started coming together a lot more as soon as I figured out all of my icons and how I wanted each material to look. I believe that I did succeed with this campaign because I got enough information on my materials to make the audience want to help. I also think that I chose a reasonable color palate, icons, text font, text size, and the words themselves. I am most proud of the logo just because it looks so clean but its also simple. I am also really proud of the brochure because everything on it flows together really nice and it is illustrated enough and has the right amount of text to keep the reader engaged but not get bored with it.
I think that the Desist from Deforestation campaign will stay as a guerilla campaign for a while because it is such a rising topic that is so important to so many people that they want to get help from others. The guerilla campaigns help really grab people’s attention and this is a campaign that will continue to do so. I think that with the style of my materials, it will help grab the attention of others and start to make a difference with the issue.

For my Human Rights Poster created in Illustrator, I used article 13, which says, Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own and return to his own. I think that my poster does advocate my Human Right because it gives a statistic that explains it well and the imagery represents the statistic and Human Right well with the different countries, the arrows, and the pie chart. I also think that text type and colors for the text I used were good because the size of the statistic is what someone looks at first that would pull their eye to it and want to know what it's about. The text of the article itself is smaller so it wouldn't take over the whole poster. The text type is also very legible and almost basic to get the point across and be bold at the same time. I think that the text and imagery would enough for a non English speaker because there are a lot of images to show undeveloped countries with arrows to developed countries and there is also a number which is the biggest text size on the poster so I think the idea is put across well. I chose the specific imagery for my poster because I think that it really explained the concept well because it had to do with other countries and I specifically put countries on there to represent it well. I think that going through the steps did help organize because it helped me figure out what to start with and what I would have to accomplish in order to get the look I was going for. None of my sketches really looked like my final but I'm really happy with how it came out! I had one look I liked and wanted to go with it but critique really helped push my idea further and make it make more sense and easier to read and process. Overall I'm really glad we had critique to make my final into what it is!

For the Reproduction Assignment, I was assigned the 1Q84 Novel Cover made by Chip Kidd. I didn’t think that this reproduction was too hard and I enjoyed making it. At first it was a little tough finding a stock image for the girl in the background because I had to observe her facial expressions along with the saturation and colors of her face. Because of her more upset or almost confused look on her face, this was the best one that I could find after looking through multiple pictures. I think that overall, the tools that I used for this assignment, in photoshop, weren’t too complicated to find or use, and I found them relatively easy. When he was making this cover, Kidd used a semitransparent vellum for the jacket, and I did my best to recreate that look turning the opacity down for the white look, and a clipping mask for the numbers. I think that working digitally didn’t change much of the look because it was easy to use the tools to replicate that see through look. I think overall, photoshop was a perfect digital platform to use for this assignment to make it look so similar to the original. In the original, I found the semitransparent vallum interesting because if you took it off the book, it would show the picture of the girl very clearly, and I think it is interesting that you can slightly see her through it, but clearly through the numbers. I personally don’t think there is much else that I could have done differently with this reproduction. I think the time we were given was very reasonable, and it was enough to find the exact tools we needed to accomplish this project. It was a fun project to do and it helped me learn a few more specific tools in photoshop that I didn’t quite know of beforehand.
