6PM. In two hours’ time, they will sit down to dinner on the patio underneath the pergola around which the wisteria grows. Stringed lights threaded between the wooden struts, evenly placed, will illumine the bubbles in their champagne glasses until the moon is properly risen. It is meant to be full tonight. He will clink his glass against hers and whisper something filthy in lieu of a toast. She will smile, take a sip of her drink, and run her foot up his leg beneath the table in retribution. He will fix her with a look, and they’ll both be tempted to push their chairs back and disappear up to the room again without eating. But before they can, the maître d’ will bring out their starters and they will have to settle—sate one appetite now, leave the other to grow steadily hungrier until after dessert.
Until then, James has decided he will wander down to the beach, take a dip in the ocean. Vesper, preferring the warm, scented water of a bath topped up with all the products the hotelier has arranged so prettily next to the taps, lies with her feet propped up on the porcelain lip of the tub, swirling her hand around in the soapy water, and imagining all the delights the evening might bring.
She has just climbed out of the bath when he returns and walks into the bathroom without knocking. She wrings the last of the water out of her hair and throws the towel aside. “My darling,” she says. “My love.” And she kisses him. “I was just thinking about you. Did you have a lovely swim?”
