This is my career ambition and the path I tried mapping out of how I might get there. The red line is my main path and the inner loops is the other skills/ things I will do simultaneously. Everything builds on each-other rather than forming a straight path.

WHY
Tumblr media
The world as we understand it to be, our reality, was created by humans. Many people walk the earth and never think about their role as creators, blinded by the masterful illusions they helped establish. Many don’t realise that they have an active role in it at all. Some things make us happy, others makes us sad. To me it feels like sadness lurks everywhere, reality is dominantly ugly. These realities are mostly created without any conscious thought. It is so easy to create ugliness, in all forms. In the physical world and in the emotional. In pain, in sadness in pure neglect. To be honest I don’t really like most of the reality created. But I discovered that I can contribute to this reality. I also have the ability to actively create. I can create that which gives me happiness. I can create beauty, I can create depth or I can simply create something that I’d like to surround myself with. I like the act of creating, it gives me control. It pulls me out of the convincingness that I have none. It gives me my power back. And it helps me to contribute to my own reality. I don’t know what I will create, I don’t know how I will create, but I know that the act of creating gives me the power to fight the monotonousness of reality. Being able to do that makes me feel free. Feeling free is an aspect of the best life I believe I can live.
................................................................................................................................
entrepreneur/ˌɒntrəprəˈnəː/
noun
a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.
I want to continue creating for me, for the reasons I deem necessary. Becoming an entrepreneur is thus a given. Plus I like taking chances, I like the rush of risking it for what I love and feel passionate about. I also like the idea of not just creating things but also creating a business.

The Golden Circle
Tumblr media
The concept of the golden circle is inspired by the golden ratio, that provides a mathematical formula for proportion and ultimately beauty. It can be used in almost every field of study and brings a formula of order to the seemingly random. The golden circle by Simon Sinek similarly provides order and predictibility in the seemingly randomness of human behaviour.
The golden circle provides us with the evidence of how much we can achieve if we first ask the question WHY before we start doing anything.
The what is easy, this is just what you are doing. The how, also pretty straight forward, but a lot of people still don’t ever think about this aspect.
The why is the biggest aspect of this circle that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. What is the purpose, cause or belief behind what you will do. Why is it important to you and why should it be to others?
Usually we act from the outside in, its the easiest. But Sinek says the the most inspiring individuals act from the inside out and so should we.
“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.”
The outside section - the what - correlates with the section of our brain that thinks rationally and analytical. The inner two - how and why - with our brains ability to feel, trust and be loyal. When we talk with peoples limbic brain (how and why) we talk to the part of their brain that also controls decision making.
If we want people to buy things from us, be it an idea or an object we need to speak to their limbic brain. We need to first answer the question WHY, then HOW and only thereafter WHAT. But first we need to know the answers to these questions ourselves. So ask yourself, before you do anything, why do I want to do what I want to do? Why do I believe in it? Why do I want it? Why is it important? Ask all of the why’s you can think of.

Talent is not enough: business secrets for designers
The business secret explored today: contracts...
Contracts are boring and lengthy but a super important. They have the potential to keep us as a designers safe and potentially save us from even more lengthy problems. They also have the potential to cause problems I guess, so starting to get the feel of reading through and not accidentally selling my soul seems like a good idea.
Section 3 about intellectual property and ownership caught my attention and is the most concerning to me. It makes me feel uncomfortable to think that I wont have the rights to what I have designed or rather ideas I’d maybe like to further explore, if designing under a firm.

Task 4 : Job Hunting
Tumblr media
UI/UX designer - UCOOK
https://www.indeed.co.za/viewjob?jk=88c15d7177cbec57&q=User+Interface+Designer&l=Cape+Town,+Western+Cape&tk=1e2v5nd5b930g801&from=web&vjs=3
Appealing
This is a position at a startup, which gives me great opportunity to grow and be creative in helping them grow. I will work on their website and any new products that will be developed. Promotes that they have a relaxed and professional working environment with flexible hours.
Intimidating
They aren't really looking for an entry-level designer. But also don't specify a required amount of experience. This means I would have to take a chance and hope for the best, like a true South-African, when applying for this position.
Required extra info
Salary
Position in relation envisioned career trajectory
Seeing that I don't specifically envision a career for myself in the field I am studying, getting a position at a startup means that I might get to grow into something unforeseen and have a greater innovation role than just a UI designer.
UI/Graphic designer
https://za.linkedin.com/jobs/view/user-interface-designer-at-black-pen-recruitment-1760241800
Appealing
Client: wellness retail brand. Core concept of the brand is to create the next generation of wellness rituals, engineered by nature to restore balance. I like designer earthy things. Designer for this aesthetic would be very enjoyable.
Intimidating
Again, looking for mid-level designer. Also requires their designer to write copy.
Required extra info
What company I would work for (the add is posted by a recruitment agency who doesn't mention that)
Position in relation envisioned career trajectory
Might get the chance to grow more into a graphic career and not into a UX career. Which would be ideal.
UX / UI - Bluegrass Digital
https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/search?locationId=OTHERS.worldwide&%3Bf_C=811967&trk=top-card_top-card-primary-button-top-card-primary-cta¤tJobId=1763639510&position=2&pageNum=0
Appealing
Digital design agency, which means I would work on different projects for different companies.
Intimidating
The fact that 41 people already applied for the position in a time period of six days and I would have to compete with this in order to get the position.
Required extra info
Salary, working hours, perks etc.
Position in relation envisioned career trajectory
This would be a great position for me to work with other digital designers in order to collaborate, learn and become a better designer myself.

TASK 4: Nonviolent Communication
Welcome to pretty much every argument between me and my mother. She feels like she has to push her authority, my ego feels bruised, I go against the authority with all I have, she feels like her efforts failed, which makes her feel disrespected and so the snowball turns and turns and bigger its ugliness grows.
So when it happened again... I didn’t try NVC to be honest. My emotions overcame me so I became angry and devensive and we naturally bumped heads. But I did chat to her the day after so we can find a way to prevent future situations like this and found this model to be quite helpfull. She got to tell me that se needs to feel respected and I got to tell her that I need the same. We both have triggers that we need to pay attention to and its good to be able to know what they are and when they manifest.
Getting back to the model for NVC, I think every part of it works perfectly, when you manage to get through the whole process without allowing your ego and emotions to and block you from clear communication and gets you blaming.
