How the COVID-19 pandemic affected me as a college student
It has been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic changed all our lives and called for a swift change in both our work and personal lives. As we adjusted to new changes and staying at home, college students and faculty had a week to change from on campus classes to 100% online courses getting use to zoom live classes, learning how to mute, and all the small challenges that present with online formats. As a student who has previously taken a few online classes, this was a new way of learning that took some getting used to. As a college student coming into campus is part of the college experience along with and meeting new friends and getting to be part of campus life. This has had an impact on my learning and doing hands-on activities in many of my classes as a business student a year from graduation. One of my favorite parts of taking business classes on campus was meeting other students in my major, in a zoom-like setting, we cannot create those easy in-person connections. What I enjoyed most about going on campus was using the library as a study place, studying from home pre-covid was a struggle of distractions such as dogs barking, jumping on my lap and constant trips to the kitchen. That’s when I decided to change my study place to the Kellogg library on campus, I found my place of study going their times a week, it was always open and gave me the opportunity to get all my homework done before leaving. This was also the best place to have study groups with classmates coming into the library before or after classes. Adjusting to a “zoom classes” took time and once getting use to online classes, I did find it easy to ask questions to the professor after the zoom class or planning on meeting with team members on zoom on times that worked best with each member’s schedule. The issue was that it took away the ability to have in face communication which is essentially as business student. I found that I was even more worried when it came to the uncertainty of everything as everyday activity was changing rapidly, there was uncertainty when it came to if I was able to pass all my classes due to the struggle of zoom classes. Even though I had a job, I still worried if I would lose it and what my nest steps would be while also being a full-time student. While taking my business courses this semester, many of us lost the opportunity to participate in in-class activities that would’ve helped students get the hands-on face to face interactions that are essential in the business world. As many college students struggled this semester, colleges did everything they could to make the process easier for all students, for example my college CSUSM provided technological support, food assistance to all students by providing drive-thru pickups, counseling services and more. As many of us struggled, we were not alone, many different companies hosted and continue to host various webinars that has made it easy for anyone from anywhere to join. Overall, it has been a huge adjustment when it came to online learning, it made many students like me appreciate what it’s like to walk on campus with friends, meet professors face to face, and the overall loss of the college experience.
