nex benedict, a 16 year old nonbinary student in oklahoma, was beaten to death by three of their female classmates in the same district libs of tiktok has been targeting. not only is this heartbreaking for us to hear about, but i can’t even begin to imagine what this must be like for the family.
too many trans children have died and too few people are talking about this
just had what was probably one of the most profound and life-changing conversations I've ever had. In an attempt to both condense my take-aways and keep private the most deep & personal aspect of my life my only biological sibling & I have a 7 year age difference and yada yada I'm the older one who had to get out to survive and have had a lot of time to process that, we've been reconnecting a lot, and he recently turned 18 and tonight I talked with him for a full hour and we got so candid and his enthusiasm for working together and initiating operation "busting you the fuck out of there" is like. I can't even describe it right now. To be at this stage of adulthood where I can do what I went though hell HOPING I could MAYBE possibly do some day and BE put-together and ready to be everything he needs me to be just validated that everything that has ever happened in my life was worth it. Everything was worth it
My country, Pakistan, is drowning. A third of Pakistan is at risk of being deluged by massive floods. 1000+ people have been killed, countless others displaced. We have the highest number of glaciers outside the poles, and because of climate change, they’re melting. The knock-on effect is unspeakable—and yet we must speak of it. Tragedy upon tragedy, especially against our poor and most marginalized, and it feels ceaseless.
Pakistan is just one of many countries who will be—who are being—disproportionately affected by climate change. We need international solidarity and we need radical change. Climate change is here, it is happening, it has been happening. The developed world owes developing countries on a moral level; corporations have bloody hands; the neoliberal economic order has stricken us with debts that are choking us; and through it all, we must—cruelly—battle for air against so many other people and causes who deserve equal attention, equal outrage, equal concern. That is not the world we deserve. That is not the world that will save us from climate change. We need to reimagine what a just world will look like. We need to build global, truly global, solidarity. And in the meantime, we need reparations.
If you can, please consider donating to one of these relief efforts.
Diet companies will be hitting hard this year. Be prepared to hear repeated sentiments of "It's time to get rid of that Quarantine 15" and "In these hard times, commit to taking care of yourself with healthy living and weight loss."
This rhetoric is going to be everywhere. And due to the nature of modern advertising, the vast majority of it will be coming from people online who just look like they're trying to share some good advice with the followers that they love so much. You'll barely be able to see the money getting thrown at them from the weight loss industry.
Don't reward them for using these manipulation techniques - Buying their products and losing weight isn't going to make your year any better, or erase the stress of the pandemic, or be the first step in self-care.
Please please please see these ads for what they are - A way of preying on your insecurity and trauma in order to make money.
