Response to John Donne’s “Death be not proud”
Although it must be bliss to not fear death,
I can’t help the dark thoughts within my head.
Ideas of never waking from my bed,
Eat my brain like an addiction to meth.
I dread the goodbye to those who I love,
The thought of farewell leaves me in a fright.
My scare is disappearing in the night.
Wish I could rip off this fear, like a glove.
Don’t get me wrong I have such faith in stars.
But, sometimes I still doubt the wondrous sky,
Like those who accused God of telling lies.
I now think of the whips that left him scars.
I will no longer have fear of the dark,
For the light God sheds, has left me it’s mark.

Personal Essay
I never thought that taking a poetry class would have such a strong influence on my life, but I was wrong. The concept of poetry used to seem so simple to me, with only one dimension, but after taking this course I realized how much complexity it actually holds. This class truly made me open up a part of my mind that I was unaware that I even had, and forced me to try my absolute hardest with keeping up with the work.
Through this class I have learned the many different tools that go into creating poetry. For example, I learned the 5 senses technique. This consists of using description to fulfill all 5 of one’s senses throughout your poetry. This method allows the reader to truly visualize what message the author is trying to prevail. Also, in class I learned what a “tenor” and a “vehicle” represent within a metaphor. The “tenor” is the object, person, or concept meant to be compared to something, and the “vehicle” is what carries the weight of the comparison. For example, within the metaphor “Your love is the morning light;” “Your love” would be the tenor, and “morning light” would be the vehicle. In addition to this, I learned all about clichés and how you shouldn’t use them within your poetry, because originality is key. All of these examples are just a small taste of the buffet of learning I consumed within this class.
In the beginning of this course I found that I had a very difficult time using concrete details to form my poetry. It was all very abstract, and only made sense to me. With the help of class lessons, and getting a well-deserved reality check about my issue, I believe that I have made strong progress. I now realize that poetry is all about using specific details in order to formulate your thoughts.
This course opened my eyes to a whole new world of literature to appreciate. After learning all of the different techniques and devices that go into making poetry, I can now fully understand and respect this form of art. As for me being an artist in this field, I am going to continue my journey and keep learning along the way. Yes, I did have difficulties throughout this class, but overcoming these difficulties is what made my poetry truly develop. After taking Intro to Poetry, I can honestly say that I am going to take writing, reading, and listening to poetry with me for the rest of my life.
