Took on a challenge by sapgoon_ on Twitter where you have to emulate your art style throughout the years.
I started drawing back in 2016 as a hobby, though (safe to say) it has become a part of my life at this point.
It wasn’t until around 2017 where I started establishing my artistic process—reflected by stylistic influence and the lack of grasp on fundamentals. I remembered being heavily reliant on 3D models since I wasn’t really fluent in anatomy. My lineart is not dynamic either and almost all of my works during this time are lined in dark teal… I mostly went with cel-styled shading as well and often relied on gradients to make up for color composition.
By 2019-2020, my works became more detailed (effort also notable in background work). The way I worked with shadows during this time period was…interesting. Though, the deformed style I used for this challenge doesn’t really reflect much the way I drew characters during the time. I think this became the point where I started exploring elements I once never dared to tackle on.
2021-2022 marked my inactivity/inconsistency. I experimented with my stylistic approach from what to depict and how are they going to be depicted. I relied on 3D models less (except in instances where I have to), and started using real life references for a better grasp. My style also became notably softer in this time period.
Currently, I have started gaining confidence in my skills thanks to my solid grasp on anatomy and shading. As a result, my works are always focused on subjects. Been messing around with perspective as well. But, just like any other skill, it’s important to make room for growth. Malapit na, pero malayo pa rin.
The time periods don’t really match up precisely as the transition is gradual, but this is my attempt to encapsulate my art style throughout the 7 years of showcasing my art on the Internet. If anything, I still have to work on anatomical nuances and drawing speed.
