GIF version of the turntable I created for the prop.
The GIF jumps around a bit so it doesn’t really showcase the actual final product.
If I where to give any criticism, it would be that the design of the generator ended up being too bland for my liking. Going forward I would like to devote more time to research for props, rather than putting the majority of my focus in to the characters. However, I do believe that the turntable accurately depicts the shape in it’s 8 different sides displayed, so I am happy about that.

Leddy-White’s animated turntable.
A criticism I have is that the soles of her feet seem to move around too much for my liking, as my initial aim was to have them rooted in one spot. Despite this however, I feel I did a well enough job of conveying how her shape is viewed in a 3D space to the viewer and I can use this as a learning experience to create more stable turns going forward.

The turnaround for Leddy-White.
I had some trouble with the back 3/4 angles initially, but I believe that I managed to end up doing a satisfactory job regardless.’

A turnaround of the Generator. I desided to have each side be representative of a different side of Leddy. One side referencing Leddy-White with it’s White/Yellow colour scheme and the other referencing Leddy-Black with a Black/Purple colour scheme.

Film Language Essay 3
I have chosen My Hero Academia to compare to Spider-man: In to the Spider-Verse. It utilises a similar technique in having two shots at different points in the story parallel one another. They are both super hero stories and both have overlapping themes, as well as contrasting ones. So I believe discussing how they both use the same cinematography differently could be interesting.

Here I drew multiple different poses for Leddy-White in an attempt to highlight her character traits. As mentioned previously, she’s a lot more light-hearted than her Leddy-Black counterpart so I tried to showcase that here, I personally view these poses to be very jovial and fun in nature.

The designs for LEDdy-White and LEDdy-Black that ended up being finalised.
Overall, I am happy with how the both of them turned out. I feel that both their designs manage to give off different personalities to the viewer, along with contrasting against eachother nicely. I believe their contrasts are not only helped by the different shapes used for both, but the colours chosen as well, with the black contrasting with the white along with the yellow contrasting with the purple. However, due to having Leddy-Black be a less lively version of Leddy-white, I have personally ended up prefering Leddy-White as I feel that her design has a stronger presence, because of this, I believe I will being going forward in this project using her rather than her darker counterpart.

Expressions I drew of Leddy-White. I drew her suprised, embrassed, smug and sad. I enjoyed exaggerating her antenna hair in order to emphasise her emotions. When drawing her sad I also decided to have her begining to transform in to Leddy-Black to highlight her change in emotions.

Sketches of LEDdy’s character prop. A generator she’s attached to by her tail, it powers her body and allows her to live. She needs to keep it fueled or else she’ll stop functioning.

Here I have started designing my characters in earnest. I have decided to name them Leddy-White and Leddy-Black. The name Leddy, alluding to the acconym LED.
Initially I played with the idea of having their heads be transulent and containing bulbs. One being turned on and the other turned off. I also sketched out some eyes I felt emoted different personalites for each form. I also tried having the dress be more puffy and lively on Leddy-White than the dress on Leddy-Black. This is also where the lightbulb silhouettes gave me the idea thought of having the screw of a lightbulb being their respective collars.
I also tried to find a place I could place the wire that connected them to their generator (the character prop) and decided on giving them a wire in the place of a tail.
Additionally the idea of glasses was briefly explored, with White having normal lenses and Black having sunglasses but the concept was quite quickly left to the wayside in favour of more expressive eyes.
Speaking of eyes, this is also where I decided to stick with the pupiless look. Additionally I tried drawing out the differences between White and Black (Hair sticking up for White, the element coil being more compressed on Black’s head, etc.).

Here I have started the character creation process. I decided to attempt to utilise the technique of drawing up silhouettes beforehand, in order to ensure early on that the character’s silhouette is recognisable. I don’t often do this, so this was an interesting experiment for me. I feel that by doing this I have managed to strengthen the characters’ light bulb theme as the shapes I have gone with strongly resemble a light bulb or lamp. I am happy with how these have turned out.

It was at this point I started experimenting with colour (among various other things).
I considered things such as having a light bulb’s element come off her head as a form of stray hair, along with other variations such as a lighting bolt that droops for Leddy-Black. I ended up placing the element shape in the place of hair bangs.
I also entertained the idea of having pupils again briefly. Considering having them simply be white outlines. I decided they did not stand out enough from a distance however and decided to removed them.
I also played around with the concept of having her glow. This is also where I solified that I wanted Leddy-Black to be based on black light rather than just being an ‘off’ version of Leddy-White.
At the bottom of the page you can see me continuing to experiment, such as considering whether or not to have the dresses be somewhat transparent, showing a silhouette on the character’s bodies underneath.
I am happy with how these experiments turned out and how their designs are turning out.

Reference I collected through research for designing the power generator I would like to use as my characters’ prop.

When it comes to taking inspiration for the hands of my characters, I believe I either want to go for a fingerless appearance such akin to the ‘Powerpuff Girls’ or a 3 finger (+ one thumb) style. I am leaning more towards the 3 finger style at the moment. I am also considering a sort of mix of the two, as shown in the show 'Adventure Time’.

I am considering adding glasses to my design. I believe they could work well in characterising the both of them. Especially if I have the shape of the glasses change with each form. Such as the lit up form having rounder and kinder glasses and the switch off form having more rectangular and harsh frames. However, I may not end up using this idea as I do not want to unnecessarily clutter the characters’ designs and make them less readable. None the less, I am glad I have considered this option.
