also wild i never thought i'd be posting this here but worth a shot?? i'm looking for a holo slabbed etho from the hermitcraft tcg creo cards merch. i've been searching for over a year, and he's literally the last etho i need to complete my etho cards collection. please oh please i have a signed bdubs for trade (and a bunch of nonsigned cards, and signed alt arts, and literally every signed hermit actually)

No idea if you're still active, but I need to let you know you changed the course of my life in late 2020. I was a kid messing around on ao3 for the first time and I came across your tumblr where you'd put a bunch of recommendations of different dsmp mcyt fics. One of those fics I clicked on led me to a discord server, which led me to friends I've known for four years now and some of the best experiences of my life. And in a weird way, it's all kinda because of you! So I just wanted to say thanks :) Funny how that butterfly effect works, huh? Hope you're doing well.

thanks! glad this tumblr made a positive impact? i kinda decided to step away from pretty much all social media once i entered college (not that i had that much to begin with). obviously i'm very detacted from dsmp and have been for years now (i think techno passing was basically the point where i never bothered to consume or produce dsmp related stuff again. i was only ever really there because of him). but its cool seeing how ppl are still interacting.

on hermit shipping there is was an account on tumblr called @hermitcraft-boundaries that had a master doc of shipping boundaries. It is neutral/positive towards shipping and was first created as @actual-hermitcraft-boundaries in response to the original URL being used to argue negatively towards shipping. Either way, the account is gone now it seems, but you can still find it's pinned post here.

Hello! This is a very late reply because I do not check my Tumblr regularly anymore (or like... at all, it seems). Sorry to the other people who submitted stuff to my inbox in 2022... I fear it is too awkward to respond to you guys now but know that your words are appreciated.

So! Since I made my original post about Hermit Shipping boundaries, some new stuff has been said and other stuff been made to my attention (as in, various tweets, clips, private message screenshots, etc from the Hermits about this topic), some of which are in the Google Doc Ichi linked here and some of which I have found elsewhere after a little digging. After sorting through what I have found, the general consensus still seems to be among the Hermits who have spoken on the issue that they want shipping content kept away from them and filterable, but that they don't want people who produce shipping content harassed or asked to take their stuff down and don't really care as long as they don't see it. Please note that harassment is just not okay in general.

Grian and Pearl have both expressed discomfort with the idea of being shipped and Pearl has asked people to not ship her as it makes things awkward between her and her fellow hermits. This is in line with the "do not show the hermits shipping content or talking about wanting to ship hermits around them". We do have to note that there is a distinction between character Pearl and CC! Pearl. I think it's up to the individual to decide how comfortable they are with this, with the hard line that no one should ever show Pearl or any of the Hermits shipping content including her, and do their best to make sure it's filterable. I've also found clips of Gem talking about shipping - older ones saying to not ship her and a newer one saying she's been a less against it recently as long as she doesn't see it, because her main source of discomfort with shipping was chat and people in general talking/asking about her being in a relationship with any man she interacts with, and that recently people have calmed down about it. Please note while I distinctly remember watching this clip, I have not managed to find it again so do not take this as hard fact. I will try to scrounge up the clip eventually (and if anyone knows what I'm talking about please let me know).

Also note that while I watch Hermitcraft episodes, I don't watch streams live (I only watch the occasional VOD), check Tumblr like once a year now, and have stopped being on Twitter completely (not that I was really active there to begin with). When I research for this sort of stuff, I first use Google to help me find sources, and then sometimes ask around on tumblr blogs and discords. Please don't expect me to be "in the know" about what's going on in the fandom right now.

At some point I should probably make a follow-up post going into detail all the other stuff I've found, but as anyone still paying attention to this blog can see, I am no longer active in this fandom (or any fandom). I am still an avid fan of Hermitcraft content and am up to date on everything (as in, I've watched the Season 9 perspective of several hermits from beginning to end and am as excited about Season 10 as the next person), but due to becoming a college student, simply don't have as much time or energy to write as much as I used to. Hopefully it doesn't take another year for me to make a proper post again.

where ive been part 2 electric boogaloo

it’s been so long. hello? is anyone still around?

anyway, on the off chance that anyone is wondering (and because ao3 doesn’t have a place to let you post these kind of things - honestly, rightfully so) - here’s an update on why there’s been like no activity from me for uhh nearly a year if you go by fic posting activity. 

remember that last post in august 2022 where i said i won’t just disappear and am trying to keep to a fic schedule? turns out i’m a massive fucking liar, clown on my grave, yes i deserve all the ridicule for thinking i could get my life together enough for that. 

at the time, i was entering high school as a senior. “it won’t be as hard as last year,” i thought. “you’re only taking 2 ap classes and everything else is easy. everyone says senior year is a breeze.”

aaand then my computer broke. and there’s no wifi where i live. so.

plus, turns out between college applications and work and extracurriculars, fic got thrown to the wayside. and since i have this tumblr mainly as a supplement to my fic stuff, this also got kinda abandoned. 

i want to clarify i do want to keep writing and i really haven’t abandoned any of my fics! really! even if it’s been literal years (wow, time flies). and once i graduate high school i am definitely going to try to get back into the flow of regularly writing fic again like i did in summer of 2021. mcyt fics, and probably another fandom or two i’ve gotten interested in. mostly still mcyt tho 

so yeah. that’s all. if anyone’s read this far then uhhh thank you?

Uhh, um, I was your update and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you :D because everytime you write anything you try to expand the world and setting in such a way that make it feel like that setting is lived in and that it's real.

Valley of Serenity made me cry multiple times . It's one of the best fic that I've read before. If you changed some of the names of the people and places it could be a novel, I mean it's already a novel. I can't believe you people make that stuff for free.

Everything you written is so wonderful and so rich but my all time fave is "those maddening circles, that we must fly and dance our way around (Maddening Circles)"

I still reread this one multiple times. The way you've built up Vex culture us just *chef's kiss* I love how there was conflict about what to do with Scar and Cub, it just shows how the different characters had different experiences and are fully realized characters. I cry everytime I read this. Let me say this once again, the world building is phenomenal. Ahhhhhhh 😍😍😍

I just wanted to say that you are appreciated and loved. It's ok to take your time to write. It just means your ideas had time to marinate properly before you put it into writing. Well wishes for you to all your endeavours and us readers can wait because your well being is priority first and foremost. Now, I'll reread some of your works in the meantime. :D

aww thanks so much you have no idea now much seeing those words mean to me after i've basically ghosted the internet for so long. and i agree with the assessment that maddening circles, despite being my first mcyt fic written when i was but a wee naïve 15 year old and has some Early Work Weirdness to it, is still probably still my best overall work. the vex stuff was really fun to write and recently i've made a bit of a loop back to it (CIRCLED back to it, you might say haha) with aftereffects.

also, one of the hermitcraft fics i'm outlining is a sequel of shorts, though much shorter and functioning more as an epilogue

hi quick update for anyone who might still be around abt my fics

yes, I’m planning to finish my current DSMP wips with the possible exception of Your Best Friend. that’s slowly ticking away in the background, but not highest priority. for now, I’ll be posting Hermitcraft stuff again on my Ao3, and I’m working on some stuff for another fandom unrelated to mcyt (the magnus archives, anyone?) that i’ll probably also be posting soonish

junior year of high school and now my coming senior year, along with college prep and getting my driver’s license has taken a lot out of me and i’ve been in a worse mental state than usual the past year, which is why my writing has tanked in terms of volume. i’m trying to get it back up again because i genuinely want to produce good stuff and further develop my skills, and i won’t deny that audience commentary helps motivate me too.

i have no clue what senior year is going to look like, but while i still won’t be able to post fics very regularly, i’ll try my best to not disappear into months-long hiatuses again. y’all might notice i’ve put up 4 hermitcraft one-shots in the past 2 months, which is a good starting point. 

so, for all of you that have stuck around for dsmp, you can still look forward to most of my current fics being completed, and i do still have ideas for new ones clicking around. i lost interest in engaging with the fandom about it a few months before techno’s passing, but i do still have interest for the characters. if you like hermitcraft, i’m writing for that again and have a few longer fics planned. and finally, expect the mangus archives stuff to show up sometime, and possibly a few other fandoms as well

also i deleted my twitter because i realized feeling invisible-peer pressured to join it was a bad reason to join it and i wasnt getting anything of value on there

Okay so it’s come to my attention that this test has suddenly gotten some more attention. I am very pleased to announce, after much work, frustration, and planning, the AP New L’Manberg History test! (With a focus on foreign relations). 

This is a test which takes place in a AU of the DSMP where the events of Season 1 canon have been modified to make sense within the context of a world that has countries, populations, and culture. Note that events post Season 1 DSMP have been disregarded. 

General format taken from the AP World: Modern Exam. I’ve treated this as a fun (and mildly stressful) worldbuilding exercise, and I hope anyone who takes this derives some enjoyment from it as well!

Hey! I'm on chapter 10 of VoS and you said you're still figuring out Tumblr. You've probably figured it out by now but if you haven't, I'll answer any questions you have.

I love the fic so far! Haven't put it down really. I have 4 books on my shelf I could be reading but I'm reading this instead xD

There's a strange phenomenon that happens when you relate to a character, the phenomenon of emotion.

It can make you feel better because "I'm not the only one" yet at the same time, it can drag you to a place where you have to face what's making both of you miserable.

You have to ask yourself if you really have the same problem, thus the same solution, or if it's just barely different enough to have a different, unknown answer.

And depending on the day, you'll come to a different conclusion.

You've perfected the art of utilizing this phenomenon because I keep flopping emotions EVERYWHERE, I relate to Phil and Wilbur both to a scary amount. You've made me both question everything and also feel far more secure in where I'm at at the same time lol

Anyway, can't wait yo see what happens next. It'll probably take me forever to finish so don't expect me to comment on the ending anytime soon XD

the balance between characterization, relatability, and realisticness is really hard to nail down, so I'm glad you "keep flopping emotions" haha. especially since I prioritize characterization and realisticness a lot more than relatability, which I usually don't care for too much. I admit i never write the characters with relatability in mind--it's more like I focus on how their individual characteristics mesh with basic human nature. but if the characters are reflective of human nature, then they do often turn out to be relatable!

hermit shipping boundaries, and the 2019 hermit shipping controversy

With the rise of the newest generation of big mcyt creators came the normalization of fans asking creators about their boundaries regarding fanfic/fanart/shipping, and creators replying to them as if it’s just a normal part of their job. I’ve also realized that also, most people who watch Hermitcraft joined during season 7 or season 8, and the HC fandom has largely forgotten about the whole shipping drama of late 2019. Hence, there are questions about the boundaries of the Hermits, especially regarding shipping, and sometimes they’ve been directed at the Hermits themselves.  I will spare you the read ahead if you’re just here for the answer to those questions. Here it is:

The Hermits do not care about shipping. They do not want to see it and avoid places where it might pop up (by either avoiding sites like Tumblr, or filtering tags). If they do manage to see it, they are rational adults who know to just ignore it and move on. This means that shipping Hermits is not breaking boundaries. They don’t want to see it, but that doesn’t mean they think it shouldn't exist. This is a distinction most of teenage Tumblr still struggles with.

This also means that if you see shipping content and are uncomfortable, then filter/block/ignore and move on. Do not try to convince them to stop. The Hermits are not on your side. 

So how do we know this? Well, because of the Hermitblr shipping controversey of 2019, from which we had an actual Hermit (re: Cleo) talk somewhat in-depth about the issue. 

Did you know ZomebieCleo had a Tumblr that she once interacted with the community with? Link: https://zombiecleoprime.tumblr.com/ She reblogged art, answered questions, ect. The blog is still up as of writing. Around the latter half of season 6 (late 2019), the shipping controversy happened on Hermitblr.

It’s important to remember that the community was much smaller back then. There were a few big names which everyone knew and followed, and some of them could talk to the Hermits and did so semi-regularly. They wielded a lot of influence in the community. In late 2019, said community broke into a “war” over whether or not shipping Hermits was okay. Some said big names used their influence to drive the conflict and incite fans to argue and push for a certain side. 

It got to the point where an anti-shipper was doxxed by a group of shippers. I can only confirm one instance of doxxing, but there might have been more. There was also a lot of harassment and some death threats from either side. Extremely not okay. 

Cleo was in the dark for most of this - she answered questions, but didn’t venture out into Hermitblr proper too much. Obviously, people asked her about this shipping question. Cleo’s response: Really? Jesus christ, label your fics and stop reading fics in genres that upset you.

The Hermits are all grown ups, we are not lost and we do not need saving.  If we want to stop something, we will come out and say something.

Post 2:

How to avoid shipping problems 1) Make sure shipping fics are appropriately labelled. 2) Ignore things with those labels 3) If you have problems with 1 or 2 which are things you can control, do not post a diatribe on the main tag telling people that they are gross and disgusting and they should leave the main tag, because that is gross and disgusting.   It’s sickening to come into this place and seeing people hating others because they do something harmless you don’t like.  I am embarrassed that this is representing Hermitcraft fandom.  I have no control here, I cannot stop you but the shaming has to stop.

Cleo is not anti-ship. Response:  Ahh, you see, this is the “clearer set of examples and reasoning” I was talking about… oh, hey, look I can use passive-aggressive quote marks too!

How about: You appear to be using someone being trans as their entire character and appear to be using torture on said character by means of gender dysphoria.  These things are upsetting to wander into and I would appreciate the following labels at the top of your fic: Trans issues, non-consensual,  graphic, upsetting, dysphoria.  I personally am blocking you now as I find this topic disturbing and would like to not see it again.Then you block them.  You cannot control what people write.  What you can control is your reaction to it.  I realise that you want a perfect answer, well, there isn’t one, it’s certainly not vilifying a whole group of people.  Nor is it dictating what can and can’t be posted on an open forum, because one will lead to disappointment and the other will lead to you becoming hate filled.  Oh and before you pull out the air quotes on me again, I do not agree with anyone doing those examples you listed above, however I am not up for vilifying anyone doing those things either.  Once again, block is the tool here, if you are unwilling to use it then what more can I realistically offer here?

This led to people, mostly anti-shippers, calling her transphobic and saying she supports trans mpreg (these people include the author of ATUS, btw). Obviously, these kinds of accusations are bullshit. 

At this point, Cleo was also receiving death threats. She wasn’t aware of the wider community backlash towards her response to the shipping drama and now the trans fic drama, as well as a lot of details about the community war in general, but once she figured it out here’s her response: (link: https://zombiecleoprime.tumblr.com/post/190310771390/ill-start-with-a-thank-you-to-the-anonymous -

I’ll start with a thank you to the anonymous person who actually told me exactly what has been going on, you have been the only one to tell me anything beyond ‘doxxing occurred’ and how I should be ashamed by it.  I’ve been avoiding this place because, you know, death threats, so if you’ve been wondering why I don’t respond beyond the two asks I got on the subject, yeah, that.

1) I’ll say it again, doxxing people makes you scum of the Earth, just so we’re clear on the matter.  What that means is I condemn doxxing, for the record.

2) I don’t give a shit what people say on the internet, do not doxx them.  (If they’re doing something illegal go to the police.  They’re paid to do this investigating)

3) Not even if they’re talking shit about me, especially when they’re talking shit about me actually.  The same thing I said to them applies to you, if you don’t like what they have to say, don’t read it and block them.  (I’m sort of reading between the lines here, the anon said that things had been posted disagreeing with things I’ve said and that the doxxing might be a reaction to that, I don’t know if that’s the case factually but I figured I’d address it)  If people don’t like me they’re allowed to go off in a blog post, what they can’t do is doxx and stalk me.  I would say vice versa but seriously, just do the block thing, we need far less toxic build up here.

4)  If you go beyond doxxing and into stalking, well that’s illegal and I hope you enjoy your prison cell.  Same goes for death threats.  Also, doxxing is illegal in some places, I’m pretty sure.

5) If you’re celebrating a minors’ absence due to fear and mental anguish, whilst it’s not illegal, it is shitty.

I’ve turned off anonymous asks, so from here on out you’re going to have to own your words.

EDIT - I’d also like to send my condolences to the person in question, whilst I know they blame me, that has no affect on how I feel about the situation.  No one should have to live through that.

Cleo left Tumblr after that and hasn’t come back. To this day she’s expressed negative connotations with the Hermitblr community. 

It’s important to note that as a result of some tumblr nsfw functions, many blogs who had shipping content or talked about it were shadowbanned - they were nearly impossible to find and wouldn’t show up on searches either. Harassment and fear drove a lot of these people off the site entirely. The community also didn’t allow people to take sides - if you were neutral, you were labeled as “supporting shipping” and dragged in eventually, which is why I use the term “people who accepted shipping” during this post. Remember that the community was a lot smaller back then, so it was harder to just chill in your own corner. 

People on every side did terrible things during the controversy, but it’s pretty easy to see who “won” - the anti-shippers. There were more of them and they weren’t the ones getting shadowbanned left and right, so most of them stayed on while the same can’t be said for shippers/people who accepted shipping. To this day the Hermit shipping presence is disproportionately small and still recovering for this reason. 

After this slowly died down, people sort of just agreed to block each other and pretend the other side didn’t exist/the war never happened. (I will note that while I was watching Hermitcraft regularly during the time of the shipping war, I was not a part of the fandom. I didn’t go on social media and just sometimes opened Ao3 to read fics. This is from the perspective of someone who was never part of the event and pieced together what happened afterwards. Around this “aftermath period” was when I started looking at posts on Hermitblr and noticed the signs of the conflict that had happened - mostly people referencing it, dni lists, and people commenting on each other’s post going “hey did you know ___ is a shipper and you shouldn’t reblog/talk about stuff from them”). 

We still have some veterans/people who remember. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen on Hermitblr again. Cleo leaving seemed like it was a sort of “wake up and get your shit together” call from to stop being awful and sending death threats. 

TLDR for 2019 Hermitblr shipping controversy: In late 2019, Hermitblr, which is much smaller than it was now, had a huge fight about whether it was okay to ship people. Doxxing, death threats, and harassments occurred. Cleo came out to state that the Hermits don’t care about whether or not people ship them, and that the death threats/doxxing/harassment should stop on every side. Cleo received many death threats and had people try to argue with her over this. She then left Tumblr. Hermitblr gradually calmed down and agreed to block each other and pretend it never happened, but in terms of community presence far more shippers/people who accepted shipping were driven off the site than anti-shippers.

The “don’t ask the Hermits” part about shipping comes from several other sources, mostly various statements from Hermits. Here’s one of them from Impulse. Caption: Someone asks “okay, this is a bit of a yikes side. Shippings? Impulse replies, “yeah probably best to avoid that”

Combined with Cleo’s previous statements of “Really? Where’s the full context of the question to prove/disprove it? I have no clue. This is the only screenshot that’s been circulated and I certainly don’t have access to what I presume is his patreon/membership discord. But I’m saying that it’s the most rational explanation of this answer. 

To reiterate: You are not breaking boundaries by shipping Hermits. You are breaking boundaries by going out of your way to get them to see shipping content. The Hermits filter their internet experience. They do not need or want you to go comment on other people’s Hermit shipping stuff saying “take this down, how do you know this isn’t breaking a boundary”. It’s dubious whether or not constantly asking them about it is breaking that boundary, but you probably shouldn’t constantly ask them about it.
