There are also a number of add-on features, so you can expand the functionality of Reader without moving all the way up to Pro.

When you open a PDF in Adobe Reader, most of the functions you’ll need will be in the top or sidebars. If you’ve used other Adobe products, you’ll find this familiar and easy to get to grips with. Most of the main editing functions are represented by little icons in the top bar and the main app features (sharing, commenting, etc) are in the side.

Using Adobe Reader is a pleasant experience. The interface is attractive and easy to find your way around, and carrying out any of the tasks offered by the app is simple and intuitive. The app’s settings are surprisingly complex. There are dozens of options pertaining to the various ways in which you might want to view, use, or export your PDFs and, since Adobe Reader has been around for a long time, there’s ample support online, both user-generated and official.

Is there a better alternative?

There are plenty of alternatives to Adobe Reader, although not as many as you’ll find for Windows and none of which are quite as complete. Foxit offers PhantomPDF; it has many of the same features as Adobe Reader (and many extra) but isn’t free. Okular will let you read PDFs, but it’s not user-friendly, and Skim, which is free, lets you carry out extensive note-taking and annotation of PDFs, but isn’t strong on options like sharing and can never be upgraded or extended in the way Reader can.

Our take

Adobe Reader for Mac is a solid app to use. It offers lots of features in a really clean and user-friendly interface and the results it produces are perfect. On Mac, PDF tools aren’t available in great numbers, so having a tool that works as well as Adobe Reader (and for free) is a huge bonus. On Windows, there are probably tools that work just as well, or even better, but most of them are not available for Mac.

Should you download it?

If you've found a specific issue with PDFs and you think that Adobe Reader is likely to help, by all means, download it. Similarly, if you’ve opened and interacted with PDFs without Reader and found the experience lacking or complicated, then give it a try. For many users, however, a standalone PDF app just isn’t something you’ll use often enough to warrant a download.

On to the ways to get a full free Office 365.

1. Get Office 365 through your school

Microsoft offers Office 365 Education for free through many schools and universities. If you are a student or educator, and your institution is eligible, all you need is a valid school email address.

This is a truly free version of Office 365, and you should enjoy this benefit for as long as possible. In addition to your familiar MS apps, it comes with tools to encourage collaboration in the classroom, like Access, Sway, Teams, SharePoint, Stream, and Flow.

Every so often, Office will verify you are still are still an active educator or student. Once your Office 365 Education plan expires, applications will become view-only after 30 days. After 60, you will lose access. To keep working, you will need to subscribe to Office 365, or back up your files and use Office Online.

If you used to be a student, see if your school address will work. If not, access the alumni discount they offer for Office 365 Personal.

2. Get the free trial of Office 365

This is the easiest free option for accessing premium versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, and Access. But it only lasts for a month. After that, you’ll have to begin a subscription or use one of the other methods here.

Note: You will have to provide payment information to sign up for the free trial, though you won’t be charged until the trial expires. When it does, you will start getting billed automatically.

Remember to turn off recurring billing in your Account Settings unless you want to start paying.

Unlike the online version, when Office 365 is installed locally you have full document editing capabilities offline. You can share the free Office 365 trial version with up to five other people. Each person gets 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage, plus the ability to sync and share files across Windows, Apple, and Android devices.

This is a great option, but only for the short-term. You only get a single free trial per email and credit card, so unless you try to bend the terms of the license agreement, it’s a one-shot deal. Or is it?

3. Get the free trial of Office 365 ProPlus

Microsoft provides evaluation versions of its products to potential customers through its Evaluation Center. There you can test-drive the latest features and services the company offers, including Office 365 ProPlus. First, you’ll need to register an Office 365 ProPlus account and qualify for an evaluation account.

Note: Same as the trial version of Office 365, the ProPlus trial requires payment information and bills you after a month.

Once you have access to the full evaluation version of Office 365 ProPlus, you can share and manage up to 25 users. It comes with all of the premium Office tools, not just web apps, and Skype for Business. Streaming installation for up to five computers per user allows everyone to work offline with full editing capabilities.

Since it is an evaluation version, Microsoft is still working out the kinks of this software. Things may not work perfectly, so be prepared.

This is Microsoft’s way of hooking enterprise customers, and it is a sleek toolkit for any company. But if you are not looking to pay once the trial is up, you will have to back up and switch to something else.

Office Online is great, considering it’s free, but the lack of function or offline capability can be extremely frustrating. If these things are getting in the way and costing you time, it’s likely costing the company more money a subscription would.

This isn’t always going to work—especially if you are your own boss, sorry freelancers—but I told you we were looking at every option to get Office 365 free of charge.

5. Free Office 365 (with purchase of a PC)

Here’s an option that is not going to be right for everyone, but if you are in the market for a new computer, this could be an answer. Some PCs come with one year of Office 365. This sometimes includes ultra-affordable laptops, and you still save $99 annually on an Office 365 subscription.

One thing to make sure of is that you are getting what you want. Some computers will only come with Office 365 Personal, and others may not even have an OS installed. Read the fine print and confirm everything is set up as you expect.

What about Office Online and Mobile?

Now you know how to get a free download of Office 365, but I should mention two easy, free-forever Office options just in case they do the trick.

Get Office Online

Office Online is entirely cloud-based and works on most browsers. As long as you have the internet, you have access to familiar MS Office tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as Sway, OneNote, Outlook, Calendar, OneDrive, Forms, People, and Skype. Simply create an account and log in from anywhere to collaborate with anyone.

While Office Online doesn’t take up any space, the downside is that you need the internet in order to use the programs and your documents. If you can rely on wifi wherever you need it, this limitation isn’t so bad. Plus, you can always sync your computer with OneDrive so that files are automatically stored for offline access.

The features are greatly limited compared to Office 365, but for personal use, it’s probably okay as long as you plan ahead. The extra logistics required to coordinate larger teams using Office Online, however, probably don’t end up saving much money.

Get the Office mobile app

The Office mobile app works on Android and iOS on your phone or tablet. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are combined into a single app that syncs with all of your devices that use Office.

You can download additional apps, which take up some space, but all of your documents are stored in the cloud. You’ll be able to create and sign PDFs, and edit documents, tables, and slides—but be aware that the editing features are limited without the Office 365 subscription.

Similar to Office Online, the mobile app is okay for personal needs but quickly reveals itself wanting at the enterprise level.

Note: Editing in the Office mobile app is limited to screens up to 10.1 inches. If you have a larger screen, you will have to upgrade to Office 365 or be stuck in read-only.

Dubious methods and hacking

Finally, I want to point out that similar to giving Microsoft multiple credit cards or emails in an attempt to prolong your free trial of Office 365, there are other dubious methods out there. These are not always safe for you and may be illegal.

I mention them because your search has no doubt included these options, and many are disguised as genuine with a price that is too good to be true.

For example, you will find people offering Office 365 for $1 on eBay and other sites. This will get you a product key that maybe works, and definitely isn’t legal. Typically, you can use these accounts for one year, or until Microsoft detects that your key is not legitimate.

There are also videos and blogs that show you how to hack Office 365 by emulating a successful KMS activation. These authors claim that the KMS license key is legal, which may be true, depending on how the code is written. But installing the key to access licenses you never bought is certainly not legal.

Plus, whatever patch you copy into your system may have other functions you don’t want. A hacker wrote it after all. For us, we don’t consider it worth the risk.

This goes, too, for any free Office 365 you discover on torrents and other sites that get shut down periodically. With an illegal free version of Office 365 you may get more than you pay for in the worst way.

Final note: If you have to pay… it’s really not that bad!

In the end, Office 365 is an extremely valuable set of programs. Getting it for $99/year is pretty amazing.

I understand why it’s annoying, especially in the eleventh hour when your documents are out of reach. Trust me, I get it. But I also understand that the software of this century requires ongoing maintenance for security and integration. The game has changed and it’s not necessarily evil for companies to move to a subscription model.

Of course there are people who will disagree with me.

LibreOffice is a free fully-loaded office suite. Over 200 million people use the open-source program, which supports more than 200 file types. It’s got Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, and a number of other applications that are recognizable to any user of Word, etc.

There are Google’s free offerings as well, which solve most personal needs for document creation, sharing, and storage. For enterprise needs, though, G Suite for Business is reasonably priced and has a higher user satisfaction score than Office 365.

For simple shapes and text animations, designing in After Effects might be the quicker route, but for more complex graphics, Illustrator will save you time and sanity.

Adobesoftware applications work quite well together; you just need to know the ins and out of each program. In this tutorial, we’re going to take a look at how to work with Illustratorfiles in Adobe After Effects. Specifically, we’ll look at how to bring AI layers into AE and prepare them for animation. I’m going to show you how to prepyour file in Illustrator, and I’ll also teach you all of the ways to importyour file in After Effects. Finally, I will go over a few methods of manipulatingthe AI file further once it’s in After Effects.

Let’s get started!

The Project

My client has provided me with a layered EPSvector graphic file of the United States that they want me to use in the animation. They’ve asked me to take this map and create a variety of animations, including an animation for each individual state. Let’s take a look at the file and see how I can work with this file in Adobe After Effects.

Prep the Illustrator File

First, I will save my EPS file as an .ai or Adobe Illustrator file since After Effects provides more support for this file format. To ensure that Illustrator files appear correctly in After Effects, I’ll select Create PDF Compatible File in the Illustrator Optionsdialog box. Another issue I have with this file is the fact that everything is located in one layer. Since AE only displays AI layers, I need to put all of the individual states in their own layer. To do this, I’ll select all of the states in layer 1 and select Release to Layers. Now my AI file is prepped for import.

Import into After Effects

I have several options when bringing an AI file into After Effects. When I importan Illustrator file, I get the import dialogue box, which provides me with two options: Footage and Composition. If I import my file as Footage, I can choose to mergeall of the layers into one, or I can import a specific layer on its own. I can further specify if I want the layers to retain their size or scale up to be the size of the document. If I choose Composition, a new composition will appear in my AE project that will include all of the imported layers from the file.

Create Shapes from Layers

Once I have my Illustrator files in After Effects, I can make further adjustments. To provide myself with more versatility when animating, I can turn all of my Illustrator layers intoshapes. To do this, I’ll select my layers in the comp I imported and go to Layer > Create Shapes From Layers. Using shape layers opens up a number possibilities, including quickly changing the fill and stroke options, adding a gradient, changing the path, adding a wiggle effect, and a handful of other features.

You're pretty safe if you're changing colors, or doing minor adjustments to the shape, but adding new layers (or deleting layers) or making major changes to the design can cause big problems in After Effects. What you can do if you need to make big changes is duplicate the Illustrator file, make your changes, and re-import into After Effects. This does mean you have to start the animation over again.

The Tunnelblick application contains the Tunnelblick GUI, OpenVPN, and OpenSSL, so no other installations are needed except for VPN configurations.

Updating Tunnelblick: It is usually easiest to update using Tunnelblick's built-in updater (see the 'Preferences' panel of Tunnelblick's 'VPN Details' window), but you can install a new version of Tunnelblick without uninstalling the previous version; the previous version will be upgraded without disturbing your existing configurations and settings.

Downloading Tunnelblick and Verifying the Download

First, download the latest disk image from the Downloads page. If you need help deciding between the 'stable' and 'beta' versions, see Stable vs. Beta.

Note: If you are using an older version of macOS (10.4 - 10.7.4) you should download an older version of Tunnelblick from the Deprecated Downlaods page.

Next, verify the download. This is an important step to ensure that the download was not damaged or deliberately modified en-route to your computer.

Installing Tunnelblick

Depending on your browser and its settings, you may need to double-click the downloaded disk image file to mount the disk image. A window similar to the following will appear:

To start the installation process, Control-click the Tunnelblick icon and click 'Open' and a new window will appear.

If the window is similar to the following:

then your security settings do not allow you to open files that are not from the Mac App Store by double-clicking. You should click 'OK' (the window will disappear), then Control-click the Tunnelblick icon and click 'Open' to open the file. A new window will appear.

If the window is similar to the following:

then click the 'Open' button to continue. The window will disappear and a new window will appear.

If the window is similar to the following:

then you have OpenVPN configurations that have not been converted to Tunnelblick VPN Configurations.

Tunnelblick only uses Tunnelblick VPN Configurations because OpenVPN configurations are difficult to secure properly. When a configuration is converted, all of the original files used by the OpenVPN configuration are collected into the Tunnelblick VPN Configuration and then the Tunnelblick VPN Configuration is secured.

Ignore will ignore any OpenVPN configurations. They will not be available for use in Tunnelblick — they will not appear in the list of configurations.

Quit will quit Tunnelblick.

Convert Configurations will attempt to convert your configurations before installing Tunnelblick. If the conversion fails, Tunnelblick will not be installed.

Click Ignore or Convert Configurations. The window will disappear and a new window will appear.

A window similar to the following window should now be displayed:

Specify whether or not you wish to have Tunnelblick check for updates each time it is launched. When an update is available, you will be given a choice of whether to install the update or not. Tunnelblick checks for updates by making a request to the tunnelblick.net website each time it is launched, and every 24 hours thereafter while it is running. As part of its normal website operation, the website keeps a log which includes information about such requests; see tunnelblick.net Privacy for details.

Specify if Tunnelblick should check that your computer's apparent public IP address changes when you connect. This checking may help insure that your configuration is correct, and may help Tunnelblick diagnose DNS problems. Tunnelblick does this checking by making a request to the tunnelblick.net website before each attempt to connect to a VPN and after a successful connection is made. As part of its normal website operation, the website keeps a log which includes information about such requests; see tunnelblick.net Privacy for details.

At any time after installation, you can check for an update by clicking the 'Check Now' button on the 'Preferences' panel of the 'VPN Details' window.

At any time after installation, you can change checking for IP address changes individually for each configuration.

Check or un-check boxes to reflect your initial setup and click 'Continue'. The window will disappear and a new window will appear.

A window similar to the following window should now be displayed:

If you are reinstalling, upgrading, or downgrading Tunnelblick, the window will show the version number of the current copy and of the new copy. The current copy of Tunnelblick will be put in the Trash before it is replaced.

The name and password of a computer administrator is needed to install Tunnelblick. Tunnelblick's imbedded OpenVPN needs root privileges because it needs to modify network settings by configuring new network devices, changing routes, and adding and removing nameservers. Because we don't want you to enter your administrator account name and password every time you start a VPN connection, Tunnelblick installs a program that allows it to start a VPN connection with super user rights. Tunnelblick uses your administrator account name and password so it can install this program. Tunnelblick also secures itself from being modified.

Click the 'OK' button to install Tunnelblick to your hard drive. Conversion of OpenVPN configurations to Tunnelblick VPN Configurations, if requested, will be done before the installation so that if they fail the installation will not take place and any existing Tunnelblick installation will not be changed.

After the conversion and installation is complete (it should take only a couple of seconds to install Tunnelblick, but if conversions are done they can take tens of seconds), a new window will appear.

If Tunnelblick is running, the window will look similar to the following:

(Note: Connections set to 'automatically start when computer starts' will not be closed and may interfere with the installation. You must close them manually.)

Click the 'Close VPN Connections and Stop Tunnelblick' to continue. After all connections are closed and Tunnelblick has quit, the installation will proceed.

When the installation has finished, a notification will be displayed.

When there are no configurations (which is usually the case for a new installation of Tunnelblick), the configuration helper will appear:

Click the appropriate button and the configuration helper will guide you through the installation of configurations.

Launching Tunnelblick

To launch Tunnelblick after setting up configuration and other files, double-click Tunnelblick in the Applications folder.

If Tunnelblick is running when you log out, shut down, or restart your computer, it will be launched automatically when you log in. It will also be launched automatically if any VPNs are active when you log in. Otherwise you will have to launch it manually when you need it.

Tunnelblick requires few computer resources when no VPN is connected, so most people leave it running all the time.

Sync your account on your computer

1. Select the profile image in the browser taskbar.

2. Select Manage profile settings > Sync > Turn on sync. If you see an option to sign in, continue to the next step. Note: If you see Manage profile settings, you're already signed in.

3. Select Sign in and choose an account or enter your account details.Select Continue.

4. Select Sync when you're asked if you want to sync your account. This syncs your favorites, passwords, and other browsing data across the devices you use with this account. Note: If you choose to sync favorites, any tabs you previously set aside will also be synced.

5. To switch to another account, click on your profile image, then add or select another profile.

Client Download

Unlike the ASA, the MX does not support web deploy or web launch, a feature that allows end users to access a web page on the AnyConnect server to download the AnyConnect client. With the MX, there are download links to the client software on the AnyConnect settings page on the dashboard, however, the download links are only available to the Meraki dashboard admin and not the end user. We do not recommend sharing the down link with users as the link expires after every five minutes of loading the AnyConnect settings page.

On Windows 7 it's in a hidden folder: C: ProgramData Cisco Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. The file name is preferencesglobal.xml. Your various profiles should be in a subdirectory there called 'Profiles'. You can see them update in that folder. There are also preferences which are in a different hidden folder.

Apr 26, 2017 I have searched on the Internet and found how to set the multiple profiles in VPN client. To set multiple profiles in Cisco AnyConnect VPN client. We have to add an XML config file with name “Profile.xml” The file has to be placed in the following path. C: ProgramData Cisco Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Profile.

Install the VPN client. Download the Cisco AnyConnect VPN for Windows installer. Double-click the InstallAnyConnect.exe file. When a message saying the Cisco AnyConnect client has been installed, click OK. Connect to the Stanford VPN. Launch the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client client.

We recommend downloading the AnyConnect client directly from Cisco.com as there may be an updated version in the Cisco repository. Refer to the doc for the AnyConnect clientrelease notes. We also recommend using either Meraki Systems Manager, an equivalent MDM solution, or Active Directory to seamlessly push the AnyConnect software client to the end user's device.

AnyConnect requires a VPN client to be installed on a client device. The AnyConnect client for Windows, MacOS, and Linux are available on the Client Connection section of the AnyConnect configuration page on the dashboard and can be downloaded by a Meraki dashboard administrator. Please note, the download links on the Meraki dashboard expire after five minutes. The AnyConnect client for mobile devices can be downloaded via the respective mobile stores. You can also download other versions (must be version 4.8 or higher) of the AnyConnect client from Cisco.com if you have an existing AnyConnect license. AnyConnect web deploy is not supported on the MX at this time.

Installing the AnyConnect client

You only need the VPN box checked. Once the client has been installed on the device, open the AnyConnect application and specify the hostname or IP address of the MX (AnyConnect server) you need to connect to.

AnyConnect Profiles

An AnyConnect profile is a crucial piece for ensuring easy configuration of the AnyConnect client software, once installed. The MX does not support the use of custom hostnames for certificates (e.g. vpn.xyz.com). The MX only supports use of the Meraki DDNS hostname for auto-enrollment and use on the MX. With the Meraki DDNS hostname (e.g. mx450-xyuhsygsvge.dynamic-m.com) not as simply as a custom hostname, the need for AnyConnect profiles cannot be overemphasized. Profiles can be used to create hostname aliases, thereby masking the Meraki DDNS with a friendly name for the end user.

Cisco AnyConnect client features are enabled in AnyConnect profiles. These profiles can contain configuration settings like server list, backup server list, authentication time out, etc., for client VPN functionality, in addition to other optional client modules like Network Access Manager, ISE posture, customer experience feedback, and web security. It is important to note that at this time, the Meraki MX does not support other optional client modules that require AnyConnect head-end support. For more details, see AnyConnect profiles.

When a profile is created, it needs to get pushed to the end user's device. There are three ways to do this.

1. Through the AnyConnect server (MX): If profiles are configured on the dashboard, the MX will push the configured profile to the user's device after successful authentication. 2. Through an MDM solution: Systems Manager, an equivalent MDM solution, or Active Directory can be used push files to specific destinations on the end user's device. Profiles can also be pushed to the following paths:

3. Manually: Profiles can also be preloaded manually to the same paths as listed above.

How to Create a Profile

Profiles can be created using the AnyConnect profile editor. The profile editor can be downloaded from the AnyConnect Settings page on dashboard or on cisco.com. Refer to this link for more details on AnyConnect profiles.

Using the profile editor: The profile editor can be downloaded from the AnyConnect Settings page on dashboard or on Cisco.com. The profile editor only runs on Windows operating systems. The screenshot below shows a configured server ton the Server List Entry option.

When configuration is complete, save the profile. It is recommended to use a unique file name to avoid profile overrides by other AnyConnect servers, then you can upload the file to the profile update section on the AnyConnect settings page.

Please note that only VPN profiles are supported on the MX at this time. This means you cannot push NVM, NAM, or Umbrella profiles via the MX.

The result of the .xml can be seen below, after successful authentication to the AnyConnect server; this gives users the ease of selecting VPN servers on the AnyConnect client The Meraki DDNS hostname is not easy to remember, therefore end users are not expected to use it directly. Profiles should be used to make connecting to the AnyConnect server easy for end users.
