The Basics - What is Smithing?

Smithing, in Bannerlord, is a skill in the Endurance row that allows you to forge and smelt weapons within the game.

The higher your skill, the more options you will have. At the lowest tiers, you will be making mediocre hatchets. At the highest tiers, you will be able to make swords only kings would dream of wielding (a king that you could become!). The skill tree's perk options all have to do with modifying some part of the smithing process which we will discuss later in this guide. For example, the first perk you get to choose makes charcoal or iron production more plentiful and resource efficient. More on that later. Where can I smith? At every major city, there is a smithy. Click the option in the screenshot below to enter the smithy. Another significant part of smithing is the smithing cooldown. You can only do a certain amount of actions in the smithy before you will have to wait to smith again. It appears that every day you are able to do one action, and you can stockpile these actions up to three or four - I do not know the extent of this yet, as there is no information on this yet. Just be aware that you cannot smelt an entire arsenal of weapons or craft twelve spears in one trip to the smithy.

Smelting & Resource Procurement

You can't make a sandwich without bread, and you can't make a sword without iron. In Bannerlord, there are NINE different resources for smithing. In the screenshot, you can see them in order at the bottom of the screen. They are:

Iron Ore

Crude Iron

Wrought Iron

Iron

Steel

Fine Steel

Thamskene Steel

Hardwood

Charcoal

In the refine portion of this guide, we will talk more about this resources in depth. However, to get these resources, there are three options:

Buy them from a town who produces them for cheap OR buy them from a city.

Ransack them from a caravan.

Smelt weapons down into their original parts.

You can always find hardwood and iron ore in the major cities to start your crafting journey. From there, you should be able to gain some basic levels in smithing. Let's take another look at the smelt screen. On the right-hand side, you can see the weapons you are able to smelt. Here, I have a polearm which I crafted that I do not want anymore (it's a bad spear). As we can see from the icons next to it, smelting it will give me one crude iron and one hardwood (mouse over the icons in-game to see what those resources are while you are learning the icons). However, to smelt it, I require one charcoal first. To smelt it, click on the polearm on the right column, then click smelt at the bottom of the screen. In smelting, you will gain the resources it mentions, but you also will gain experience in smithing and, if you smelt a decently high ranked item, like a tier 2 or 3 sword, you will get a part of a weapon which you can then use in smithing.

The Forge - The Actual Crafting Part

This is the forge tab. This is where you get to make your gear. You can make anything from swords to daggers to javelins and maces. You cannot make armor, shields, or bows/crossbows. On the forge screen, you will see this meter on the left. This meter tells us how hard it is to make a weapon. If your smithing skill, displayed on the right of the meter, is higher or equal to the difficulty, you will be able to make a decent or better version of the weapon you desire. If it is higher, you will still be able to try and make said weapon, but you will probably make one that is essentially worthless. Each weapon has a different difficulty, based on these factors:

Weapon class (axes and spears are very simple to make, swords are far harder).

The tier of the weapon's components you chose (tier 1 components, like a basic mallet head for a mace, are far easier to make than a tier IV ornate mace head).

The size of the components you chose. The slider for each component, past the middle point, increases the difficulty. A medium or small sized axehead is easy, but making a bigger one increases the difficulty by 1-4 points.

At the bottom of the forge, you will see all of the resources you can use. This axe would expend 2 wrought iron and 1 hardwood, as well as 1 charcoal. Every weapon expends charcoal upon creation. On the right of the forge you can see the components you have access to when making your weapons. You can filter them by tiers at the top. Currently, I only have one axe handle. You gain components by smelting or forging weapons, and components are gained randomly through these processes. Each component modifies the weapon in a certain way - the change are not just visual. For example, the pickaxe head gives more damage, but is harder to control and is slightly slower than the hatchet head. Each tier requires different resources. Tier 1 requires wrought iron and/or crude iron, Tier 2 requires wrought iron and/or iron, as does Tier 3, and so on. Each component requires a different resource amount. At later tiers, like tier 5, you may require crude iron, steel, and thamaskene steel to make just one sword. On the bottom left, you can see a portrait of your character. Click that to change the companion who is crafting the weapon. If you have a companion who is a good smith, make them craft it!

Mount And Blade Warband Free

When you click smith, you will see the outcome, and be able to name the weapon if you wish. This outcome will vary based on your skill relative to the difficulty, with stats going up or down based on the difference. There is a bug where you cannot make some weapons, like axes, even if you have the components to make them. This should be hotfixed.

Refine - You'll Be in This Tab a Lot

The refine tab is where you are able to manipulate the resources you have gathered.

On the right column, you will see many resources. The resources on the right, the ones the arrows are pointing to, are the ones that are crafted from the ones on the left. As you can see, two hardwood can be used to create one charcoal. To create one charcoal, click refine at the bottom of the screen. As you can see, I cannot refine steel into fine steel or Thamaskane steel in this tab. That is because my smithing level is too low. Eventually, you will be able to choose a perk which allows you to refine those higher quality steels. You may recall earlier in the smelting tab that we smelted a spear that gave me one hardwood and one crude iron, at the expensive of one charcoal. However, one charcoal is worth two hardwoods. Is it worth it? Consider the following when smelting items.. Are the raw resources worth more than the initial item (for selling)? Do I need the resources extracted more than I need the charcoal? Often, the answer will be yes, but remember the smithing cooldown. Would you rather smelt that mediocre spear, or make an awesome sword at this moment? That is up to you.

Since you brought this up I'll tell you what I know without going into any techy details. Certain wireless protocol will completely confuse this router. I have seen the same issues on the E2500 and the WNDR3700v3 but was very rare and only in a couple dd-wrt builds and no I don't remember which. I have not found a dd-wrt build, including the 18946 for the E1200v2 suitable for me to use as my main router. Example: Using E1200v2 as router / WAP or whatever... FTP download will be at 1 mbps at best. Upload not affected and is always scary fast. Tried different FTP cleints on android phone, Galaxy S3 tab, laptops. Filezilla won't even work and it does a good job on most anything. The dd-wrt / E1200v2 / wireless negotiation / has a big fat bug in it. The http protocol is not too bad for me ... can download same files using browser without a problem. Wired clients are not affected. I still have a couple E1200v2 here that I play with and have installed many many dd-wrt builds with all the same results when it comes to that particular example. EDIT: The example above is dealing with a secure ftp server ( ftps ) I have never tried any KONG builds .. they may solve this ???? Posted: Thu Apr 16, 2015 17:49 Post subject: Linksys e1200 v2 flash failuresI have been trying to flash my Linksys E1200-RM v2.0 but all attempts to flash to DD-WRT failed. I don't know why it's not accepting it, I've even tried the 30-30-30 method to get to telnet but telnet fails to allow connection. (after any flashing attempt it returns to an unsecured yet usable original linksys flash) Is there an alternate method to flashing this with as little dangers as possible? I have used DD-WRT on my old WRT54gl for years with no problems at all. (I only set it aside as internet download speeds became faster than it could handle.)

Posted: Mon Apr 20, 2015 14:54 Post subject: I'm trying to get some kind of client mode working to provide internet to a wired device via a phone hotspot. Apparently Tomato has issues with client mode if the primary isn't also a Tomato router and I'm hoping DD-WRT does not have this issue. I am a little surprised to hear there are problems with N wireless speeds, but I ultimately don't care that much. I'm going to just go with the 21676 NEWD mini and will report if it worked. EDIT: To clarify, I already tried Shibby Tomato 124 and 128 and it did not work in client or bridge mode, even when connecting to a router instead of phone hotspot. EDIT2: I tried with the named mini for the E1200v2 and client mode worked right away. It did have issues with the my work wifi, but that seems to be an issue with fortinet blocking it and no fault of dd-wrt. Last edited by CapinWinky on Mon Apr 20, 2015 16:09; edited 1 time in total

Click Save Startup. Then Enter:

Code:iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -i `nvram get wan_ifname` -j DSCP --set-dscp 0

Click Save Firewall This works because Comcast and some others encode the IPv4 packets with DSCP value of 8 instead of 0 and a bug in the WMM driver mishandles them. The script converts the DSCP value to 0 when the packet arrives at the WAN port, avoiding the issue. http://www.dd-wrt.ca/wiki/index.php/Comcast_download_speed_fix_for_Linksys_eSeries

Let me confirm, Tomato by Shibby is the BEST THING that has happened to the e1200. It is way faster than stock 2.0.0.6 (I noticed 2.0.0.7 has been published in January). Stock by the way was faster than DD-WRT for me. Tomato seems to be running rock solid. I flashed from DD-WRT no problem. Works great with Surface by Microsoft in terms of mbps. Downloads are above 67mbps and latancy below 17ms for Charter 60mbps service. Stable! And more features for my liking than DD-WRT, including dynamicDNS for OpenDNS, DNSmasq features, and more. Make sure you have the E1200 version 2 E1200 v2 is much different than E1200 or E1200 v1 Download this >>> http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=969027#969027 Reset your router. Power cycle the router. Install latest Linksys firmware you downloaded. Then follow the wiki to install dd-wrt. Give it plenty of time (5 - 7 minutes) installing firmware. If not not working use different web browser to update firmware.

Yes I would try TFTP. Best to set your computer to static IP You will have to put in password admin in the TFTP app and either do the latest Linksys firmware or you can go straight to dd-wrt. I always use dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e1200v2.bin when I've done this. If TFTP is successful give it a few minutes until lights are steady -- don't even try to access it from http until complete these steps --- then do a pin reset (20 seconds) wait till lights are steady then unplug, wait 10 seconds plug back in. Set computer back to DHCP It should give you DHCP IP after 1 minute ... its slow booting dd-wrt. If it is briefly dropping port function as your pings indicate hopefully the TFTP app will continue with the install ---- or you may have a brick --- do this at your own risk

Yes, So far all is working, so I think a release should be soon... I would definatly go for the E1200 version 2, as version 1 has 4 meg flash no bin over mini can be loaded on it. Version 2 has a 8mb flash you can tell version 2 cause the mac starts with 20:AA version one is: C0:C1 ect . -Fractal

Well I cannot see that mine states anywhere about the version (Just E1200) and the MAC of mine starts with 58:6D as well... is there a proper way to make sure which version the router is before flashing it with the dd-wrt software?

If the router says E1200 v2, then it is version 2, and you should be safe to flash the Version2 bin.. If you flash the wrong bin, the OEM software should not let you flash it because of the wrong code pattern.. Remember Version 1 is 4mb Flash, Version 2 is 8mb flash. That being said on Version 1 you cannot use any build bigger than mini. -Fractal

To be honest I have not seen those in my area with the 58:6D mac, if you flip the router over next to the serial number it will say v2 or version2 if its a version 2 router... if its version one it will show the serial number only. The link at the top of the forum is for the latest dd-wrt builds for this device. -Fractal

Looking at the feature list alone, iGigBook is probably the closest competitor to the Fakebook app. Actually, up until recently not even a direct competitor, as Fakebook is Android only and iGigBook natively ran on iOS (as suggested by the name). It is now available for Android as well, which makes this side by side comparison possible.

Both music readers have great PDF support, including automatic indexing of collections, Real Book compilations and similar. Both apps also sport transposable chord charts, actually with an almost identical set of a thousand or so jazz tunes.

However, here the similarities stop. In Fakebook the huge chord charts library is built-in and included in the purchase, the iGigBook requires registering to the my.igigbook.com website. While Fakebook allows you to import other chord charts in several formats like iReal B, iReal Pro, ChordPro, abc and text, the iGigBook only handles PDF. Also, initially PDF import and indexing in iGigBook can be quite confusing, so I really recommend reading the users manual. That being said, once the initial setup is done the PDF import works very good. Books in the public domain download with a single click, while other real books require a proper http download link. If you have your PDF files stored locally, again please read the manual.. Now, I'm happy to report that iGigBook shines at a gig. Page turns are really quick and the set and gig list editors works well, even though the concept is unnecessarily complex. After a while you'll find your way around the app and can use the song search e.g. when taking requests (strangely enough song search and composer search are different functions). Bluetooth pedals and keyboards works as expected. Though exclusively a tablet app, iGigBook runs only in portrait mode. In most cases this makes sense, but on smaller tablets I sometimes prefer to show half-pages a little larger in landscape. (This is also nice when using your phone as a backup or always-in-the pocket song reference. There is an iGigBook Mobile version for iPhone, but this is an extra $10.)

The iGigBook app's iOS heritage clearly shows in the look and feel on both platforms. Some parts are beautifully designed, but the main impression is decidedly non-Android and a little odd on the modern styled 5.0 Lollipop. The Android version also lacks some of the more advanced features of its iOS sibling, and it still seems a little unstable (though I actually had crashes on both platforms).

Verdict: Of course, for an app like this the giggability rules. And the iGigBook is great at the gig! However, it is quite messy to set up and the competition is tough. So, as I have the choice, on the iPad I prefer forScore (even though it lacks transposable chord charts), and on Android I have my trusty Fakebook (which does everything I need).

Problem Description

“We were in the middle of some pretty intense maintenance of SQL Server last night. Then, the primary database MDF file was badly fragmented. After that, we maintained a test copy of this database to test and set up log shipping on the test database. One of us deleted the test database even without removing the log shipping first. Now, when we are using the log shipping in SQL Server, it is throwing following error message:

The log shipping secondary database SERVER.database has restore the threshold of 45 minutes and now it is out of sync. No restore was executed for 10022 minutes. The latency of restore is 0 minutes. We have been checked the agent log and logshipping monitor information. Even we have removed everything and our research leads us to believe that this error is occurring due to the backup job. We are still trying to operate it, however, not getting any appropriate solution to overcome this error. Well, it is not a big deal but SQL Server error is prompting every couple of minutes in the log. Is there anything we can do to fix SQL error 14421, severity: 16, state: 1.? Thanks in advance!”

SQL Log Shipping Error 14421 – Possible Causes

SQL Server has a Log shipping feature that automates the backup of transaction log files on a primary database server then, restore them onto a standby server. Using this feature, one can restore the database at the time of disaster recovery.

Sometimes the log shipping feature disrupts the application functioning due to improper synchronization inside the server. This interruption occurs in the form of an error prompt that says ‘SQL error 14421 Severity 16 State 1’. It means some issues have occurred during the database recovery from backup file and the restoration process gets failed.

Apart from this, there are multiple other reasons that may result error 14421 severity 16 state 1 in SQL Server, such as:

Setting up incorrect value for the Backup Alert threshold

Backup job is failed on the primary server

The restore job is not running

Restore folder path is not valid

Modified date/ time on the monitor or primary server

Data storage disk has no space

log_shipping_primaries table not updated with current values

Change in the schedule of the job

Primary server is not connected to monitor server msdb database

Invalid entries in Windows registry

Different timings of Monitor server and the primary server

SQL Server Error 14421, severity: 16, state: 1 – Solution

As discussed above that SQL Error 14421 does not only occurs due to the log shipping failure yet, there may several other reasons like server or machine issues. Hence, below are some solutions that can resolve the SQL log shipping error 14421:

1. Check if the SQL Server Agent Service is operating for the secondary server instance. Also, check that the restore job in secondary database is enabled and scheduled for running at the suitable frequency.

2. As it is possible that the secondary server might be failing hence, check the job history of restore job to detect the main cause. Mosfet bs170. If the permissions are not enabled then, enable them and restart your server.

3. The backup alert threshold value might be incorrect. Basically, this value should be set up to at least three times frequency of the restore job. Hence, if you have changed the frequency of restore job when the log shipping is configured and starts functioning, update the backup alert threshold value accordingly.

4. Examine the current authentication status between primary server and monitor. In addition, check if all the permission are configured properly. If not, then reconfigure them.

5. Update the monitor tables with latest data for your secondary database and run sp_refresh_log_shipping_monitor on the secondary server instance.

Conclusion

Another day of THE DBA chronicles is upon us. This time we are faced with the error 5170 that caused a database integrity maintenance plan to fail. Luckily, we set up logging for the plan and a look at the logs showed this detail message:

A database snapshot cannot be created because it failed to start. Cannot create file ‘E:DataBestDatabase_Data.mdf_MSSQL_DBCC92’ because it already exists. Change the file path or the file name, and retry the operation.

The error message is telling us that it is attempting to create a file in the location ‘E:Data’ and it has encountered that the file already exists.

Further log analysis from the SQL Server Error Log shows below:

2015-08-16 03:11:19.77 spid42 Error: 5170, Severity: 16, State: 1. 2015-08-16 03:11:19.77 spid42 Cannot create file ‘E:DataBestDatabase_Data.mdf_MSSQL_DBCC92’ because it already exists. Change the file path or the file name, and retry the operation.

Microsoft’s provisioning of additional details and suggested solutions to the error can, unfortunately, be a bit misleading. Therefore, the focus should not be put on these suggestions as it may not apply to this case. In this scenario, you can’t define the physical database snapshot file name when running a Check Database Integrity task.

CAUSE

A dive into the system logs should that the server experienced a system reboot during the run of the DBCC CHECKDB task. What could have caused the server to shut down? Even though this is SQL related and some administrators would not bother to go down this path, it is important you know the root cause and resolve it to prevent any future occurrences. The logs showed that a Windows update was installed which required a server reboot.

Well, that was easy to find! How do we resolve that? A few suggestions if you are caught up in this type of issue.

Disable Windows Update

Download Windows Update but Manually Install (Download Only)

Set Work Hours of the server to prevent automatic server reboots from occurring.

Next, we will see how the DBA comes in to resolve the error of 5170

FIX

Find the existing file

Using file explorer, navigate to the location of the existing file. In my case, it would be the ‘E:Data’. Yes indeed, there was the file that was causing the duplicate conflict during the snapshot creation of the DBCC CHECKDB task.

Fix the error

The fix is as simple as deleting the existing file. However, as all IT professionals know, deletion is a command that is frowned upon. It’s better to rename or move the file to have a backup should anything go wrong or need to restore to the previous state.

I also compel that you perform a certain task that I will detail below to make sure that the file is not referenced anywhere else. The least you want is to fix this error and create other issues with other processes or system relying on that file.

The snapshot file can be inspected on the metadata through PowerShell using the CmdLet

Get-Item:

As I found no other reference on this error, I deemed it safe to move it to another location as a backup. I could have deleted or renamed the file as well.

How do we know it issue is resolved? We know that a database integrity check kept failing with the error 5170. The best way to test is to run an ad-hoc integrity check and it successfully completes, then we can say the error is resolved.

The test run of the database was successful as shown below: CHECKDB found 0 allocation errors and 0 consistency errors in database ‘MyDatabase’. DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

CONCLUSION

So, there you have it! Another day of THE DBA made simple by providing a solution to anyone that encounters the error 5170. Now let’s say you find yourself in a situation where a proper DR plan was not established and the solution provided did not fix the issue, then you may consider looking into a third-party database repair tool. Your solution here may be heavily reliant to this third party tool since the SQL out-of-box repair tool (DBCC CHECKDB) is erroring out.

Europe

In 1653, the first post boxes are believed to have been installed in Paris.(1) By 1829, post boxes were in use throughout France.(2)

In the British Isles the first pillar post boxes were erected in Jersey in 1852. Roadside wall boxes first appeared in 1857 as a cheaper alternative to pillar boxes, especially in rural districts. In 1853 the first pillar box in Britain was installed at Botchergate, Carlisle. In 1856 Richard Redgrave of the Department of Science and Art designed an ornate pillar box for use in London and other large cities. In 1859 the design was improved, and this became the first National Standard pillar box. Green was adopted as the standard colour for the early Victorian post boxes. Between 1866 and 1879 the hexagonal Penfold post box became the standard design for pillar boxes and it was during this period that red was first adopted as the standard colour. The first boxes to be painted red were in London in July 1874, although it would be nearly 10 years before all the boxes had been repainted.(3)

The first public letter boxes (post boxes) in Russia appeared in 1848 in St. Selenium python web scraping. Petersburg.(citation needed) They were made of wood and iron. The post box arrived in the late 19th century Hong Kong and were made of wood. In the 1890s, metal pillar box appeared in Hong Kong and remained in use till the late 1990s. From the 1890s to 1997 the boxes were painted red and after 1997 were painted green.

North America

The United States Post Office Department began installing public mail collection boxes in the 1850s outside post offices and on street corners in large cities. Collection boxes were initially mounted on lamp-posts.(4) As mail volume grew, the Post Office Department gradually replaced these small boxes with larger models. The four-footed, free-standing U.S. Mail collection box was first suggested in 1894, following the successful use of such designs in Canada, and quickly became a fixture on U.S. city street corners.(4)(5) Unlike Canadian mailboxes, which were painted red,(6) U.S. mail collection boxes were originally painted a dark green to avoid confusion with emergency and fire equipment, then to red and blue in the 1950s, and finally, all-blue with contrasting lettering.(5)(7) The coming of the automobile also influenced U.S. mailbox design, and in the late 1930s, an extension chute or 'snorkel' to drive-up curbside collection boxes was adopted.(4)

Types of post boxes

Some postal operators have different types of post boxes for different types of mail, such as, regular post, air mail and express mail, for local addresses (defined by a range of postal codes) and out-of-town addresses, or for post bearing postage stamps and post bearing a postage meter indicator.(citation needed)

Some countries have different coloured post boxes; in countries such as Australia, Portugal, and Russia, the colour indicates which type of mail a box is to be used for, such as 1st and 2nd class post. However, in Germany and parts of Sweden, because of postal deregulation, the different colours are for the different postal services. Other nations use a particular colour to indicate common political or historical ties.(8)

Post boxes or mailboxes located outdoors are designed to keep mail secure and protected from weather. Some boxes have a rounded or slanted top or a down turned entry slot to protect mail from rain or snow.(5)(9) Locks are fitted for security, so mail can be retrieved only by official postal employees, and the box will ordinarily be constructed so as to resist damage from vandalism, forcible entry, or other causes.(5)(9)(10) Bright colours are often used to increase visibility and prevent accidents and injuries.(11)(12) Entry openings are designed to allow the free deposit of mail, yet prevent retrieval via the access slot by unauthorised persons.(5)(13)

Clearance

Post boxes are emptied ('cleared') at times usually listed on the box in a TOC, Times of Collection, plate affixed to the box. In metropolitan areas, this might be once or twice a day. Busy boxes might be cleared at other times to avoid overflowing, and also to spread the work for the sorters. Extra clearances are made in the period leading up to Christmas, to prevent boxes becoming clogged with mail.(citation needed)

Since 2005, most Royal Mail post boxes have had the time of only the last collection of the day listed on the box, with no indication of whether the box is cleared at other times earlier in the day. The reason given for this by the Royal Mail is that they needed to increase the type size of the wording on the 'plate' listing the collection times to improve legibility for those with poor sight and that consequently there was insufficient room for listing all collection times throughout the day. Some post boxes may indicate the next collection time by a metal 'tab'(14) or dial that can be changed while the box is open. The tab displays a day or number, each number corresponding to a different time shown on the plate.

Terrorism and political vandalism

During 1939 a number of bombs were put in post boxes by the IRA as part of their S-Plan campaign. When the Provisional IRA blew up the Arndale shopping centre in the 1996 Manchester bombing one of the few things to survived unscathed was a Victorian pillar box dating from 1887 (A type A Jubilee pillar).

In 1952, a number of post boxes were attacked in Scotland in a dispute over the title adopted by the British monarch which was displayed in cypher on the boxes. This included at least one which was damaged in the Inch housing estate in Edinburgh with a home made explosive device. The issue in question was the fact that Queen Elizabeth I had not been the queen of Scotland, and so Scotland couldn't have a Queen Elizabeth II. The compromise was to put the Scottish crown on Scottish pillar boxes, without any reference to the particular reigning monarch. One such example can still be seen today in Hong Kong at Statue Square.

In the United States of America, nearly 7,000 USPS collection boxes were removed following the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and the 2001 anthrax attacks in which letters containing anthrax spores were placed in public collection boxes. Since that time, a decrease in first-class mail volume and the onset of online bill payment processing has resulted in lower demand for collection box service in the U.S.(4)

In Northern Ireland several red Royal Mail post boxes were painted green by Irish Republicans in early 2009, in order to resemble An Post's post boxes in the Republic of Ireland.(citation needed)

In Britain the disposal of hypodermic needles into post boxes is a modern problem. This raises concerns among employees about AIDS/HIV and other infectious diseases and has caused Royal Mail (UK) to issue metal needle-proof gauntlets for their employees in high risk areas to protect those employees from infection.(citation needed)

Canada – a combination of a bird wing and an aircraft wing in a red circle and flanked by the words Canada Post / Postes Canada. Previously the words Canada, Canada Post, or Canada Post Corporation) were used on post boxes. Some older post boxes had the words 'Royal Mail'.

Continental Europe – most designs include a Post horn, like those used by postmen to announce their arrival. In Germany the post horn is the only element indicating post services.

Exceptions are the Anonymous pillar boxes of 1879–87, where the cypher was omitted, and all boxes for use in Scotland manufactured after 1952 (including replicas of the 1866 Penfold design) which show the Queen's Crown of Scotland instead of the Royal Cypher for Elizabeth II. Private boxes emptied by Royal Mail do not have to carry a cypher. Royal Mail post boxes manufactured since 1994 carry the wording 'Royal Mail', normally above the aperture (lamp boxes) or on the door (pillar boxes). Before this date all post boxes, with the exception of the Anonymous pillar boxes, carried the wording 'Post Office'.

The 2N7002 variant is packaged in a TO-236 surface-mount package.

The 2N7000 and BS170 are two different N-channel, enhancement-modeMOSFETs used for low-power switching applications, with different lead arrangements and current ratings. They are sometimes listed together on the same datasheet with other variants 2N7002, VQ1000J, and VQ1000P.(1)

The 2N7000 is a widely available and popular part, often recommended as useful and common components to have around for hobbyist use.(2)The BS250P is 'a good p-channel analog of the 2N7000.'(3)

Packaged in a TO-92 enclosure, both the 2N7000 and BS170 are 60 V devices. The 2N7000 can switch 200 mA. The BS170 can switch 500 mA, with a maximum on-resistance of 5 Ω at 10 V Vgs.

The 2N7002 is another different part with different resistance, current rating and package. The 2N7002 is in a TO-236 package, also known as 'small outline transistor' SOT-23 surface-mount, which is the most commonly used three-lead surface-mount package.(4)

Applications(edit)

The 2N7000 has been referred to as a 'FETlington' and as an 'absolutely ideal hacker part.'(5) The word 'FETlington' is a reference to the Darlington-transistor-like saturation characteristic.

A typical use of these transistors is as a switch for moderate voltages and currents, including as drivers for small lamps, motors, and relays.(1) In switching circuits, these FETs can be used much like bipolar junction transistors, but have some advantages:

high input impedance of the insulated gate means almost no gate current is required

consequently no current-limiting resistor is required in the gate input

MOSFETs, unlike PN junction devices (such as LEDs) can be paralleled because resistance increases with temperature, although the quality of this load balance is largely dependent on the internal chemistry of each individual MOSFET in the circuit

The main disadvantages of these FETs over bipolar transistors in switching are the following:

susceptibility to cumulative damage from static discharge prior to installation

circuits with external gate exposure require a protection gate resistor or other static discharge protection

Non-zero ohmic response when driven to saturation, as compared to a constant junction voltage drop in a bipolar junction transistor

A note on portability of these 'permanent' LTspice Components:

Many comments are made about the lack of portability of creating these permanent parts in LTspice. The approach preferred by most is to include the symbols and SPICE models directly in the folder of the schematic you are testing. PLEASE NOTE that using this method to create permanent LTspice models does not prevent this portability! Create your permanent part, or add the parts from the list below. When you share this schematic with others, or use it on a computer that does not have this component, just copy the 'asy' file and its associated SPICE reference to the 'asc' file you are providing to the foreign computer.

Some explanation:Before the arc strikes the series resonant circuit is nearly unloaded and, if the arc did not start, would gradually climb in voltage to whatever the open circuit Q of the resonant tank is times the input voltage. This could take quite a few cycles at the resonant frequency. Q will be limited by the loss in the end electrode heater windings and the resonant inductor. This sort of start does not immediately jump to a high voltage.

The conductivity of the CFL depends on the level of ionization of the gas in the tube, which in turn depends on the power per unit length of arc. As the current increases, heating and ionization builds, leading to a thicker, lower resistance arc. This is why the arc exhibits a negative incremental resistance -- increased current leads to a larger diameter arc.

However, at some point, the narrow cross section of the CFL tube limits further conductivity modulation, leading to saturation and to the arc voltage increasing rather than decreasing with increasing current (positive resistance). I would guess that this effect occurs only at damaging levels of current, but that is only a guess.

End effects, cathode fall (larger) and anode fall (smaller) tend to be quasi-fixed voltages that don't depend too much on current in the normal operating range.

Arc conductivity depends on ionization, which depends on average power input. The simplest model for this is to low pass a behavioral source set up with its output proportional to arc power. Note that this thermal averaging effect is what is responsible the arc appearing as a positive resistance at high frequency (the ions stay hot and conductive for a while even if the current goes to zero).

NEW UPDATED VERSIONLtSpiceIV_Plus_12_2009.exe LTspicePlus_10_08.exe Roberto Hugo Rodríguez Zubieta in 2005 created this executable, that provides a large number of extra components. First, backup your existing /lib/cmp directory at a minimum, and you may find it easy to just zip your entire /lib directory down. This executable will overwrite /Lib/Cmp with many more components that is based a dated version of the LTspice originals. The existing files are put into a folder /Lib/Cmp/Original. The dated version is not a problem. From LTspice, under 'Tools', selecting 'Sync Release' will restore all of the new models in the latest libs from LTspice. (At least every one I could see, using a Diff program.) Plus now you have many more.

The rest includes more than 90 files in the format *. sub, to denote that they contain subcircuits of devices or *. lib, for the files that contain families of components. This information is added to the folder /sub and it doesn't overwrite any original data. To the folder /sym is added several subfolders with files corresponding to more than 400 symbols.

In the folder examplesLtSpicePlus, there are more of 600 clever examples to be run, these are mainly in format *. asc, although there are also some few ones in format *. cir; plus in this collection there are also near 100 symbols in format *. asy.

Point the 'Carpeta de Destino' (Destiny Folder) parameter at your LTSpice install-folder, normally it is C:Program FilesLTCLTSpice IV, but it will vary (e.g. in a Portuguese version of Windows it will be 'C:Arquivos de Programas'..).

If it complains about 'Los siguinentes ficheros ya existen' (The following files already exist), choose what you consider to be most adequate: Sí/No (Yes/No), 'Sí a todo/No a todo' (Yes to replace all/Replace nothing at all) or 'Renombrar' (Rename). It's your choice, I'd say 'yes' after checking if filesizes are similar (i.e. a library you already have).

The extraction will run, it takes a while (lots of files). If finishes correctly and doesn't give any error, probably all went well, try some examples just to be sure.

Python Scrapy Selenium

In the last tutorial we learned how to leverage the Scrapy framework to solve common web scraping problems.Today we are going to take a look at Selenium (with Python ❤️ ) in a step-by-step tutorial.

Selenium refers to a number of different open-source projects used for browser automation. It supports bindings for all major programming languages, including our favorite language: Python.

The Selenium API uses the WebDriver protocol to control a web browser, like Chrome, Firefox or Safari. The browser can run either localy or remotely.

At the beginning of the project (almost 20 years ago!) it was mostly used for cross-browser, end-to-end testing (acceptance tests).

Now it is still used for testing, but it is also used as a general browser automation platform. And of course, it us used for web scraping!

Selenium is useful when you have to perform an action on a website such as:

Clicking on buttons

Filling forms

Scrolling

Taking a screenshot

It is also useful for executing Javascript code. Let's say that you want to scrape a Single Page Application. Plus you haven't found an easy way to directly call the underlying APIs. In this case, Selenium might be what you need.

Installation

We will use Chrome in our example, so make sure you have it installed on your local machine:

To install the Selenium package, as always, I recommend that you create a virtual environment (for example using virtualenv) and then:

Once you have downloaded both Chrome and Chromedriver and installed the Selenium package, you should be ready to start the browser:

This will launch Chrome in headfull mode (like regular Chrome, which is controlled by your Python code).You should see a message stating that the browser is controlled by automated software.

To run Chrome in headless mode (without any graphical user interface), you can run it on a server. See the following example:

The driver.page_source will return the full page HTML code.

Here are two other interesting WebDriver properties:

driver.title gets the page's title

driver.current_url gets the current URL (this can be useful when there are redirections on the website and you need the final URL)

Locating Elements

Locating data on a website is one of the main use cases for Selenium, either for a test suite (making sure that a specific element is present/absent on the page) or to extract data and save it for further analysis (web scraping).

There are many methods available in the Selenium API to select elements on the page. You can use:

Tag name

Class name

IDs

XPath

CSS selectors

As usual, the easiest way to locate an element is to open your Chrome dev tools and inspect the element that you need.A cool shortcut for this is to highlight the element you want with your mouse and then press Ctrl + Shift + C or on macOS Cmd + Shift + C instead of having to right click + inspect each time:

There are many ways to locate an element in selenium.Let's say that we want to locate the h1 tag in this HTML:

All these methods also have find_elements (note the plural) to return a list of elements.

For example, to get all anchors on a page, use the following:

Some elements aren't easily accessible with an ID or a simple class, and that's when you need an XPath expression. You also might have multiple elements with the same class (the ID is supposed to be unique).

XPath is my favorite way of locating elements on a web page. It's a powerful way to extract any element on a page, based on it's absolute position on the DOM, or relative to another element.

WebElement

A WebElement is a Selenium object representing an HTML element.

There are many actions that you can perform on those HTML elements, here are the most useful:

Accessing the text of the element with the property element.text

Clicking on the element with element.click()

Accessing an attribute with element.get_attribute('class')

Sending text to an input with: element.send_keys('mypassword')

There are some other interesting methods like is_displayed(). This returns True if an element is visible to the user.

It can be interesting to avoid honeypots (like filling hidden inputs).

Honeypots are mechanisms used by website owners to detect bots. For example, if an HTML input has the attribute type=hidden like this:

This input value is supposed to be blank. If a bot is visiting a page and fills all of the inputs on a form with random value, it will also fill the hidden input. A legitimate user would never fill the hidden input value, because it is not rendered by the browser.

That's a classic honeypot.

Here is a full example using Selenium API methods we just covered.

We are going to log into Hacker News:

In our example, authenticating to Hacker News is not really useful on its own. However, you could imagine creating a bot to automatically post a link to your latest blog post.

In order to authenticate we need to:

Go to the login page using driver.get()

Select the username input using driver.find_element_by_* and then element.send_keys() to send text to the input

Follow the same process with the password input

Click on the login button using element.click()

Easy, right? Now there is one important thing that is missing here. How do we know if we are logged in?

We could try a couple of things:

Check for an error message (like “Wrong password”)

Note that a lot of things can go wrong when you take a screenshot with Selenium. First, you have to make sure that the window size is set correctly.Then, you need to make sure that every asynchronous HTTP call made by the frontend Javascript code has finished, and that the page is fully rendered.

Waiting for an element to be present

Dealing with a website that uses lots of Javascript to render its content can be tricky. These days, more and more sites are using frameworks like Angular, React and Vue.js for their front-end. These front-end frameworks are complicated to deal with because they fire a lot of AJAX calls.

If we had to worry about an asynchronous HTTP call (or many) to an API, there are two ways to solve this:

Use a time.sleep(ARBITRARY_TIME) before taking the screenshot.

Use a WebDriverWait object.

If you use a time.sleep() you will probably use an arbitrary value. The problem is, you're either waiting for too long or not enough.Also the website can load slowly on your local wifi internet connection, but will be 10 times faster on your cloud server.With the WebDriverWait method you will wait the exact amount of time necessary for your element/data to be loaded.

This will wait five seconds for an element located by the ID “mySuperId” to be loaded.There are many other interesting expected conditions like:

element_to_be_clickable

text_to_be_present_in_element

element_to_be_clickable
