A few days ago I discovered this poor little guy laying on the train tracks at my local station, I took it upon myself to rescue him, clean him, and reunite him with his owner.

most recent example i have of this is after i said to my friend "i dont really like squishmallows i think they look boring." and in continuous cultural debates of all time, this reactionary sentiment is reiterated time and time again and just.... what does it accomplish?
"You don't like it because its popular" is, of course, a catch-all defense to criticism of something people like, and it pretty much neutralizes any argument you could have. Matters of taste are by nature subjective, and depending what it is, you can just dislike something because you don't like it! And in other cases, you can dislike something popular for a whole multitude of reasons! You can dislike the next big show bc you think the characters are annoying, you don't think the jokes are funny, there's something genuinely offensive, etc., and reducing all of these reasons to just "you're just a contrarian" is willfully ignorant. And, even if you do dislike something because it's popular, so what? If it's so popular, you're obviously in the minority, so your opinion hardly makes a dent! If someone expresses annoyance at something popular, you can rest assured that there are a hundred other people who disagree and share your opinion!
idk if its been growing in recent years or if its always been like this, but it really should not matter whether you like something trivial or not. You can like something someone else doesn't, and their opinion can't really stop you, especially if its something as ultimately trivial as pop culture. And rest assured, you probably dislike something that they like, that's just how subjective things work.
in short, it's annoying lol
the "you just dislike it because it's popular" defense to (petty) criticism is such a plague.
#it goes along w my distaste of the comment 'its pretentious'#to express that you dont like something avant-garde or vaguely intellectual#like no there are legitimate reasons you dislike it and its not bc the film is pretending to be smart#my cringe comp
