Hi! I know you don't write her very often, but I love your Unohana. I don't know if this is an extra scene request, exactly, but re: your Renji joins squad 4 au, you've mentioned that he's probably seen Unohana's bankai. How would that even go down, and how unhinged would Unohana get? In this au, does Renji ever learn more about Unohana or does she just skirt around the topic forever? (If this is a no go then no need to publish, or, heck, even if it's fine I'm a nervous wreck just sending this)
I really did try to stick to the prompt this time, but it ended up being more about what Unohana knows about Renji, instead of the other way around. Thanks, queen who gives us nothing!! Anyway, here you go, just a lil story about a very normal relationship between a guy and his very hinged captain.
| read on ao3 |
(This takes place between Part 1 and Part 2) TW: Blood. Lots.
💀 ⚔️ 🩸
Unohana Retsu looked on, gently, but attentively, as her Fifth Seat poured her a cup of tea.
He had hands that were meant to grip a sword. Long fingered, knobbly knuckled, criss-crossed with scars, not a few of which she had given him herself. Nevertheless, his pour was steady, graceful, even.
"I know that you and Third Seat Kira are friends," she said, "so I suspect you've already heard the news."
Fifth Seat Abarai waited until he had placed the teapot back on the tray before responding.
"About his offer from the Third?"
Retsu nodded. "He told me this morning that he had accepted it."
Abarai nodded back, as if he was confirming the information to himself. "He told me he was gonna. I wouldn't--" He stopped himself and cleared his throat before continuing. "It's not a position I think I would like, but he seems excited about it."
"It's been wonderful having him here," Retsu observed, "but I've known for a long time that the Fourth wasn't a home for him."
Abarai's brows furrowed momentarily. Retsu wondered if he objected to this characterization of Kira, or if perhaps he was pondering a different unstated implication. "I guess you don't want me to try to talk him out of it, then." Or maybe he was just trying to figure out what any of this had to do with him.
Retsu took a sip of her tea. It was too hot, slightly oversteeped and worst of all, had a strange phantom sweetness to it. How?? They were her own tea leaves. She had watched him brew it. How did he do it? She placed her teacup back down on the table again. "I want you to take his seat."
Abarai blinked at her for a moment, owlish behind his thick-rimmed glasses. "Can't, ma'am. I haven't passed my Level 12 Kaidou Certification. Third Seat has to be able to run the Relief Station if you and Lieutenant Kotetsu get called away. And I don't think you should make an exception for me. Not for this."
The Fourth Division had a rigid set of exams and certifications that qualified its members for various positions. Retsu was not in the habit of granting exemptions generally, but Abarai wasn't the sort of person that rules were made for.
He was hardly her first involuntary transfer. Retsu was all-too aware of her squad's reputation as a dumping ground for underperforming shinigami. In his first three months at the Fourth, Abarai had cast zero kaidou, avoided three-quarters of his medical shifts, and submitted sixty-two transfer requests (Retsu still sometimes wondered about four that had come in on the same day. She never asked him about it. It must have been a Hell of a Tuesday.)
Exactly one month after she made him a deal--if he actually started trying, she would arrange for Isane to give him swordfighting lessons, and promised to transfer him if he was still unhappy at the end of a year--Twelfth Seat Aoga came to her and in a hushed voice told he that he thought Abarai might be a prodigy.
"Prodigy" wasn't exactly the right word for it. Abarai was just good with bones. Aside from herself, Retsu had four medics who could perform a full skeletal reconstruction, all senior officers, brilliant surgeons with distinguished tenures. Now, she had a fifth who couldn't otherwise heal a skinned knee. Everything he did was like that, though, backwards and out of sorts. He was excellent at chest compressions and setting bones and anything that required physical strength, but he struggled with the basic healing spells most people learned at the Academy. Long before he could do an anesthetic or antiseptic kaidou, the trauma surgeons were squabbling over him, simply because he was an incredible battery. When he couldn't get the hang of the common cold relief kaidou, he dug up one of Kirinji's horrible old techniques from somewhere in the depths of the library. It had been developed for highly infectious diseases that shinigami sometimes brought back from the deep Rukon and involved using your own immune system to turbo-charge the patient's. (Retsu had forbidden its use because there was a high probability of fatal backslash on the healer. Abarai usually just ran a high fever for a day or two afterward.)
That was all years ago, though. Abarai had grown into a perfectly competent healer. He wasn't the fastest or the most delicate, and his flesh healing still had a tendency to leave scars, but if there was one thing he excelled at, it was keeping people alive. No one could figure out exactly how he did it, or replicate his technique, but he was exceptionally good at pulling people back from the brink.
The real reason, though, she'd started giving him the exceptions that let him take on shift supervisor roles before he had the healing qualifications, was that Abarai was a natural leader in exactly the way that many of her subordinates were not. He had steel nerves. He was decisive in a crisis. He had a loud voice and people listened to him.
But shift supervisor wasn't the same as Third Seat.
"I agree," she said. "But I think you can get that certification. You've come a long way since we made our deal, Fifth Seat Abarai."
Abarai's cheeks colored, and he took a quick slug of his tea to cover his embarrassment. "I think I've pretty well held up my end of that bargain," he managed with a sheepish grin. "Level 12 Kaidou certification seems a little beyond what I agreed to."
"You have already gone quite far past what you agreed to," Retsu acknowledged. "But why stop now? You're hoping to make vice-captain yourself someday, aren't you?" She didn't point out that he was perfectly capable of passing the vice-captain's exam any time he chose to take it. He must be aware of this; he'd spent the better part of a year helping Kira through his own preparations.
Retsu chanced another sip of the tea while she waited for him to answer. It had not improved.
Abarai sucked his teeth for a long moment, then sighed in defeat. "There's a self-healing portion on the Level 12. I can't do it. I've tried and tried, but I got nothing. Can't heal a single scratch if it's on my body. Ask Kira, he's given up on me."
Retsu stared at him in amazement. "That can't be true. Everyone knows that your healing system--"
Abarai shook his head and shrugged expansively. "It's all involuntary. I'm a fast healer, but I got nothing to do with it. No kaidou involved."
Impossible. Abarai wasn't just a fast healer. His recovery ability, both in speed and magnitude, was a topic of hot speculation among her top officers. The very specific circumstances where his kaidou was above average were generally attributed to some form of leveraging off his own natural talents. She herself, who was quite familiar with his zanpakutou, had long assumed that it had a secondary healing aspect. Nevertheless, she had also assumed--
"Last week," she said, more curtly than she had intended, "when the Eleventh's Third Seat put his spear through your shoulder--"
"I mean, I cleaned it and bandaged it," Abarai admitted it. "Then I just slept it off."
And had been on shift eight hours later. Retsu closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "What do you do after our spars, Fifth Seat? That thigh wound I gave you last time. The one you said 'only looked bad.'"
"Oh, yeah. That was a poor judgment on my part. Kira and I were sposed to go out later, though, so he. Uh. Found me passed out from blood loss in the hallway and gave me a patch-up. I woulda woken up eventually, if he hadn't! My body is very good at making blood!"
Retsu gathered her inner serenity. Abarai was not, by far, the most worrisome of her officers, but she had to worry about him in very different ways than her other officers. "Don't you find it strange," she said slowly, "that you have so much natural ability at healing, and yet you're unable to take control of the process yourself? That's all it is--a matter of mind over reishi."
Abarai's eyes clouded, and he looked away. "I know. It should be. But it's certainly not the first time something about my healing doesn't make any damn sense."
"That's not true," Retsu reminded him. "Everything about your healing makes sense. For you." She knew he didn't like it when she brought these things up. He was more willing to talk to Isane about feelings-related things, and Retsu was usually content to leave it between the two of them. But there were times where more directness was necessary. "It's a mental block, most likely."
"It's quite common to not be able to heal yourself, actually," Abarai prattled back emptily, a notch too loud, as though he hadn't heard her at all. "Most people got something or other they just can't do, right? That's why that 12th level certification is so rare! But you know who does have one?"
Retsu narrowed her eyes at him. Of course she knew.
"I'm sure Fourth Seat Iemura's been looking forward to Kira leaving for a long time," Abarai went on. "He'd be pretty mad at me for leap-frogging him, I think." As if Abarai didn't drive Fourth Seat Iemura to the edge of apoplexy on a daily basis, primarily by the mere crime of existing. "Besides," he said, sincerity returning to his voice, along with a slight edge of desperation, "now's not a good time for me to be thinking about exams. I'm so close to bankai, I can almost touch it. I know it."
Retsu knew it, as well. And she knew that his goals were not her goals. His earlier point had been well made--he had been more than fair to her.
"I understand," she said. "I have been thinking about that, as well, you know. There's a special training I have been considering, but I wasn't sure you were ready to get serious about it."
Abarai's eyes widened. "Really? I mean--I am! I really am! I'm ready!"
Retsu smiled sweetly at him. "In that case…when is your next day off?"
💀 ⚔️ 🩸
Abarai was quiet from the time they left the eastern gate of the Seireitei shortly after dawn on Saturday morning. Isane and Kira both had a habit of getting very chatty about nature whenever Retsu took them out of the city to train. It wasn't just the lack of conversation, though. Straining her ears, Retsu could still barely hear Abarai's footfalls. Despite his size, the leaves and branches rustled no more at his passing than at her own.
It was easy to think of him as a city boy. After decades in the Seireitei, Abarai's accent had been worn down to an occasional colorful expression, although it occasionally flared back to life when he was putting an unruly patient from the Eleventh in their place. He knew every street of the Seireitei, though, could name every player on the city football team. He was generally a cheerful and boisterous presence around the Coordinated Relief Station. You tended to hear him before you saw him.
Retsu knew as well as anyone, though, that you could change yourself on the outside, but you never really lost the old versions of yourself. You just covered them over, like an oyster creating a pearl. And she knew well what lay at the center of Abarai's soul. She had been to the deepest depths of the Rukon. Places where reality became thin, where time looped back on itself. Most Souls didn't survive long there, and those that did were…something else.
Abarai had grown up at the frayed edge of Soul Society. Still within the borders. Still in a place that resembled civilization, she reminded herself. He was the soul of a human child who had died and taught himself survive against all odds, a soul who had learned to move silently through the woods and chose to fight with tooth and claw for every drop of blood in his body. He wasn't a monster-boy created out of the bloody, ragged edges of Soul Society itself, the love of fighting made into the shape of a person. He just reminded her of one sometimes.
The sun was high in the sky when Retsu found a place that she felt would do. A wide, grassy clearing was ringed by a stand of stately pines. They were tall, but the trees were still young by the standards of Soul Society. Younger than her. She and Abarai set their packs off to one side, took a drink of water, did some stretches.
"You said we were doing something special?" Abarai asked as they lay on their backs, each hugging one knee to their chest.
"Hmm," said Retsu, switching legs. "Maybe that was a lie."
He turned his head to look at her.
"An exaggeration," she clarified. "It's not that special. We're just going to fight."
He narrowed his eyes at her, clearly not buying this.
"You've already done most of the preparatory work," she explained. "You're strong enough. You've fully mastered your shikai. You can externalize your zanpakutou spirit." She stretched both legs out in front of her and sat up. "All that is left is to convince them that you need it. You need a challenge. A rock to crash up against, something that will break you to pieces without their intervention."
Abarai sat up and frowned. "I thought that was what fighting Captain Kuchiki was for."
"That's theoretical," Retsu replied. "You need something more imminent. You could go fight him, I suppose. I am not sure Zabimaru would be sympathetic to your cause."
Abarai stuck out his lower lip. "I'm pretty sure they wouldn't."
"It's no matter," Retsu said, rising to her feet. "That's never been your plan anyway, remember?"
Abarai nodded. "Right. You're right. Gettin' ahead of myself, as usual. Captain Kuchiki's had his bankai for ages. I need to master mine before I can face him. Which means I gotta get it, first."
What was it like, Retsu wondered, to be so impossibly young? To have so much laid out before you, to want so badly. She could hardly remember it.
"Just so," she said, striding to the center of the clearing. "And to do that, you will fight me."
Abarai rolled to his feet in a smooth motion. "I've fought you before," he grinned.
"I haven't been serious before," she replied, drawing her zanpakutou and examining it in the sunlight. There was an eagerness in her sword today, one she hadn't felt in a long time. "Are you ready?"
"Sure," said Abarai, "whenever you are. Look, there's really nothing special about this? Just a regular ol' fight? There's nothing you want me to focus on or try to--"
"Try," Retsu replied, " not to die. Bankai." The blade of her zanpakutou began to loosen and sag, dripping between her fingers to form a thick pool of blood-like ooze around her feet. "Minazuki."
If this were Kira, or perhaps even Isane, she would have given them a moment, let the impact sink in. But this was Abarai, who had grown up on the edges of the world, breathing violence into his lungs like spores, letting it spread through his blood and marrow and bloom from his skin. He blocked most the first volley of Minazuki's blood whips before his sword was even fully from its sheath. She still got in a good lash across one cheek, another against his calf. He had Zabimaru unsealed in time for the second round, and managed to block it completely. Minazuki was fast, though, too fast for Renji's shikai. The third attack hit before Zabimaru could reorient, severing the elbow tendon. Next, both knees. His legs hadn't finished buckling beneath him when she laid a deep gash across his gut, and one on the chest to match.
The wounds were carefully chosen. They both knew it. Immobilized and laid open, a sure death by exsanguination. Well. A probable death. Retsu stepped closer and placed the tip of her sword at his throat. His superhuman will to survive might be able to regenerate blood fast enough to keep pace with the torso wounds, but she didn't think that even he could outlive a slashed throat. Minazuki's ooze slithered around them, fencing in the growing lake of blood that poured from his body, soaking into her socks and sandals. "If you yield," she said, "I will heal you."
Stubborn as ever, Abarai tried to prop himself up on his good arm, which caused a fresh gush of dark liquid to fall out of him. Retsu waited. The arm failed him. He fell back down in his puddle again, then rolled onto his back. "After you heal me," he groaned, "can we go again?"
"No," replied Retsu. "That will be it for today."
Abarai was silent for a long time.
"Renji," she said. "You need to make a call. The patient is dying."
An angry growl rattled through his chest. "Save 'im," he finally sighed. "I yield. Whatever."
Retsu flicked a hand, and ropy tentacles of Minazuki clambered up onto him, sealing over his wounds with loud, wet slaps.
Abarai squeezed his eyes shut for a long moment and made a distressed noise in his throat. After the initial discomfort passed, one eye opened and swiveled to regard her. "This is just Minazuki's usual goop, ain't it?" he wheezed. "Does it change? Between fighting and healing? Chemistry-like?"
"Is now really the time to be thinking about this?" Retsu asked. She didn't usually use Minazuki's bankai form to heal people, and honestly had never thought about it much. Also, unlike Abarai, who practically had a summer home there, she, herself had never spent much time in Shikai-Minazuki's stomach.
"If I only get to fight you for twenty seconds at a time, I gotta learn as much as I can from it," Abarai said, closing his eyes again. Retsu's heart thumped in her chest. He wasn't anything like any of her other children, not even the lost one she kept trying to make him into, and for a brief moment, she loved him more than she could stand.
"When can we do this again?" he finally asked.
"Next week, if you like. If you feel ready to go again."
He let out an irritated whine, or possibly a whimper of pain. "Took…two hours to walk out here," he said, sounding more than a little petulant. "This is really how it's gonna be?"
"Yes," she said. "I don't like to release my bankai where people can feel it. This is how it's going to be."
He was quiet, and they both listened to Minazuki glorp and blorble away at his injuries for a few minutes.
"I need to fight your bankai to get bankai, but I'm gonna need a bankai if I'm gonna last long enough to figure out what kinda bankai I need to fight yours," he mumbled, more to himself than to her.
"Well," she said, "you only have to yield if you want me to heal you. If you want to heal yourself, I'll give you as many time-outs as you want."
Abarai's eyes shot open and his head rolled to the side, so he could regard her fully. "Time-outs?"
She nodded sweetly. "Mm-hmm."
"If I…I if heal. Myself." He took a deep breath, closed his eyes again, and rolled his head back to face the sky. "Fuck." Another deep breath. "Sorry for the language, ma'am."
"Don't worry about it," she replied. "And I know you can do it. I believe in you."

KlubOutside Q&A 1-100 [Translation]
Translated by @reikorun
Q1.
2021.01.18
Could you tell us if there was any music, for instance, which became the basis for the image of each character in BTW?
A1.
I'll write about it in the set list section at some point.
Q2.
2021.01.18
How can I be a mangaka for Shueisha?
A2.
You can make a submission to Jump-mangasho. All Jump editors can speak English.
Q3.
2021.01.18
Could you give us the details around how you came up with the word "Bankai"?
A3.
Before the serialization of BLEACH, I tried to use the word "卍殺伏龍砲" (Bansatsu-Fukuryuhō) in another manga, I repurposed it from there.
Q4.
2021.01.18
Right now, what game are you absolutely hooked on?
A4.
Towards the end of this year, I was playing an absurd amount of Zelda Musou (Hyrule Warriors).
Q5.
2021.01.18
Is there any possibility that unrevealed Zanpakutō or Bankai will be introduced in some form in the future?
A5.
If there is a place where I feel it would be acknowledged by a good deal of readers with a suitable number of pages then I would like to draw them someday.
Q6.
2021.01.18
Are there any comedians that you have been enjoying lately, sensei?
A6.
Tokyo Hoteison and Tontsukatan.
Q7.
2021.01.18
Did Sensei come up with the idea for a fan club himself, or was it proposed by the editorial department?
A7.
This was originally a project that a former editor, who is currently working in the web department, brought forward because he wanted to work with me.
Q8.
2021.01.18
Please tell us your dog's name!
A8.
It's "Uni".

Q9.
2021.01.18
In the anime version of BLEACH, the costume designs of some characters such as Soi Fon, Yoruichi-san and Harribel-sama were different from the original work, what did you think about that?
A9.
Back in those days, there was a rule within Jump that "only works which have finished serialization will be made into late night anime." However, nowadays you can ask them to broadcast it late at night and stay true to the original work. By the way, ALPHAxOMEGA's Harribel figurine is based on the original work.
Q10.
2021.01.18
Regarding Gin, rather than a Kyoto dialect, is that an Osaka dialect with a touch of Kyoto?
A10.
That's correct.
Q11.
2021.01.25
I would like to know what it was that Renji wanted to hear from Urahara-san after turning up in the Human World during the Arrancar Arrival arc, even going so far as to do chores for him!
A11.
"Why did you choose Rukia as the hiding place for the Hōgyoku?" Kisuke told him half truth and half lie, but Renji was satisfied with it.
Q12.
2021.01.25
By some chance, I wonder if Kubo-sensei was actually the originator of Whiskrs STORE?
A12.
I am the originator. This is a brand that aims to put out merchandise in which I am involved in everything from conception to completion.
Q13.
2021.01.25
Tite Kubo-sensei, when you think about a character, do you also think about colors at the same time? Or, how do you decide the colors?
A13.
It's pretty much done at the same time. In such cases, the color scheme is determined at the line drawing stage so there is no need to deliberate over how it should look.
Q14.
2021.01.25
What are your favorite sweets?
A14.
Inamura Shozo and Toshi Yoroizuka. I loved their Mont Blanc and mille-feuille but I can no longer find either of those anymore.
Q15.
2021.01.25
Kubo-sensei, could you tell us from your own perspective how to go about creating characters so that readers can empathize with them and find them compelling?
A15.
What's important is whether or not that character has a unique mindset which sets them apart from other characters, so it's not that I think it's necessary to empathize with a character.
Q16.
2021.01.25
Why is the phrase "nandato" (*"what did you say?") used so frequently in BLEACH?
A16.
At the time, there were many works with distinctive catchphrases for characters, so this was an experiment to create a catchphrase for the work rather than the characters, thereby giving the work itself its very own personality. I then put it to work as dialogue that does not compromise the individuality of each character, even when multiple characters are using it.
Q17.
2021.01.25
In BLEACH, "BAD SHIELD UNITED" is brought up as a Human World 'movie' but does Mille really end up dying? Since the speaker is Mizuiro, it's hard to tell whether it's his usual dark humor towards Keigo or if he's serious, I've been curious about that for quite some time.
A17.
She dies. My first editor from back then (who was also my editor at the time of BSU) also said to me "I'm shocked though…."
Q18.
2021.01.25
In BURN THE WITCH, there were often color illustrations which were colored digitally, but around what time did you start trying digital coloring?
A18.
I started from BTW. As far as the order of things go, the Jump cover for chapter 1 is probably the first one that was done digitally. I was nervous until that issue of Jump came out.
Q19.
2021.02.01
Are there any parts of your characters which make you think "this is hard to draw."
A19.
When it comes to parts, large breasts are all difficult. Also, during the week where Szayelaporro's release state came up I complained the whole time whilst drawing it.
Q20.
2021.02.01
When I was reading "BURN THE WITCH", I very often got the impression that Noel was always positioned on the left and Ninny on the right, but I wonder if there's any significance behind this positional relationship…!?
A20.
In order to generate an impression of the characters with a limited number of pages, I did this as a sort of staging effect in the sense that ‘a character's traits are incorporated in their stance.’ You have a good eye….
Q21.
2021.02.01
I believe each squad was assigned a color, I once tried to identify the location of squad barracks based on those colors. Since there are 4 gates associated with a particular color, I thought of Shōryūmon as Seiryū (east - blue), Shuwaimon as Suzaku (south - red), Hakutōmon as Byakko (west - white), Kokuryōmon as Genbu (north - black).
As I recall, the townscape was circular so I tried to arrange the colors of each squad with the ‘Yellow Emperor’ as the centre and it turned out as follows. I suspect it might be in this circular arrangement: starting from Shōryūmon with 6, 1, 11, 8, then from Shuwaimon with 13, 4, 2, from Hakutōmon with 3, 5, 9, and finally from Kokuryōmon with 7, 10, 12. ×[1]
Moreover, I'm awfully curious about the actual line up because it is Ichimaru-san from Squad 3 who interrupted the gatekeeper of Hakutōmon, and the three individuals who turned traitor are situated close together. Is there any established blueprint for the placement of squad barracks within Sensei's mind?
A21.
I can't say for sure without seeing an illustration but judging by what I just read, I think this is very insightful.
Q22.
2021.02.01
Are there any manga, anime, dramas, movies, etc. (other than Kubo-sensei's own works) that as a reader or viewer make you think "this work is amazing!" or "I want you to read/watch that!"?
A22.
My favourite program of the past few years has been Netflix's "The Final Table." It's a cooking competition show, but I think it's the pinnacle of Shōnen manga style cooking battles.
Q23.
2021.02.01
What is your favorite Hiroshima specialty?
A23.
Cream cheese momiji* and plain momiji with chunky sweet red bean paste. (*Momiji manjū are maple leaf shaped sweets.)
Q24.
2021.02.01
I would like to know what kind of work tools you use!
A24.
I don't really have many special tools because I'm not that particular about them … if it's okay, I'll post a photo soon.
Q25.
2021.02.01
I've read in some articles before that the series consists of arcs mainly focused on members of Ichigo's entourage like with Rukia's rescue arc, the Arrancar arc, the Fullbring arc and the Quincy arc. Was this structure something decided upon by Kubo-sensei from the very beginning of the series??
A25.
That's right. I was drawing while wondering if I could continue the series until I reached Uryū.
Q26.
2021.02.01
Izuru-kun's Zanpakutō is Wabisuke and Wabisuke is the name of a type of camellia. Does the theory that the reason why there are multiple scenes within the story where he decapitates his opponent, have its origins in the fact that the camellia is likened to a head and is described as falling?
A26.
That's correct. I thought everyone would take notice about the Wabisuke camellia but at the time it wasn't really picked up on that much.
Q27.
2021.02.01
What is your favourite Pokémon?
A27.
I've never played Pokémon so I haven't the slightest clue.
Q28.
2021.02.08
Does sensei decide the contents, continuity elements and general flow of novelized works like "BLEACH WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU" and "BLEACH Can't Fear Your Own World"?
A28.
I was the one who passed on the contents and details affecting continuity, I left its portrayal up to the two authors. Whenever they happened upon a part they didn't quit understand along the way, they would also come to consult with me.
Q29.
2021.02.08
When is the collaboration between sensei and THE BACK HORN?!
A29.
I'd like to do that with the Thousand-Year Blood War arc.
Q30.
2021.02.08
Please give us details about the iPad you use at work!
A30.
It's a regular iPad with a larger screen.
Q31.
2021.02.08
Is Kubo-sensei continuing to play "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" without getting bored of it?
A31.
I stopped playing because the UI is too complicated. I'll pick it up again when the UI has improved.
Q32.
2021.02.08
I heard that Kubo-sensei was in charge of the design aspect for the anime original characters Amagai Shūsuke and Kanō Ashido, but was sensei the one who actually designed the anime original characters themselves?
A32.
All characters in the anime originals that are not expressly stated as being designed by me are the product of Kudō-san's taste. I may have done a final design check on the Amagai arc at least, but I didn't touch anything surrounding the Bount arc.
Q33.
2021.02.15
Sensei, do you prefer a girl who shows emotions clearly sort of like Ninny-chan or a girl who is cool-headed and doesn't show much emotion on the surface like Noel-chan?
A33.
I choose my favorite female characters based solely on whether they have big breasts or not, so if it's between these two, it's Noel.
Q34.
2021.02.15
Are there any plans to re-release the color illustration collection “JET”?
A34.
Re-release the art book, I wonder about that… I will try to ask my editor.
Q35.
2021.02.15
Do you play “Dragon Quest Builders”?
A35.
I played a lot of both 1 and 2. I'd like to see a remake of 1 with the technology of 2.
Q36.
2021.02.15
Have you ever felt that the sense of distance and relationships between the characters are different between the anime and the original work?
A36.
Up to around the Soul Society arc of the BLEACH anime, the whole time whilst watching it I kept thinking to myself "if they change things so much, it won't match up with the endgame of the story, but it's out of my hands." I couldn't really understand the characters so I started checking the script around the Arrancar arc.
Q37.
2021.02.15
Does sensei have a favorite designer chair?
A37.
There are many that I like. As for the ones I actually use and like, that includes the Jacobsen Series 7 chair, Eames Sofa by Eames, Magistretti's Maralunga and Maxalto by Citterio.
Q38.
2021.02.22
Chapter 162 of BLEACH (Ichigo's first demonstration of Bankai) is drawn in full color, please give us the inside story around its production during that time (such as how you managed to draw with full color for a weekly series.)
A38.
I finished the draft in 6 days and I set aside approximately 2 consecutive weeks worth of time before drawing it.
Q39.
2021.02.22
Sensei, who did you choose as your favorite character on KlubOutside??
A39.
I haven't made a choice yet. When I think about it seriously, I'm honestly having a tough time choosing.
Q40.
2021.02.22
Which dialect exactly is Shinji's Kansai-ben supposed to be?
A40.
Hirako and Hiyori are both written with a rough sounding Kansai dialect, but I have been told by someone from Kawachi that "Hiyori speaks with an authentic Kawachi dialect."
Q41.
2021.02.22
Are there any plans to make BLEACH a paperback edition?
A41.
I wonder? I haven't heard anything so I guess not.
※There are no plans at the moment. However, there is a possibility that we will consider it in the future depending on demand. <Editor>
Q42.
2021.02.22
Sensei, I heard that you play Brave Souls, but who is your absolute favorite character to use? Additionally, do you have a favorite character with a Brave Souls original costume?
A42.
The one I use the most is Masaki who is the strongest auto. If you're bad at action like me, you can rely on Masaki. I pull almost all original costumes if they are big breasted, in swimsuits.
Q43.
2021.03.01
What is your favorite flavor of ramen?
A43.
It's chicken broth.
Q44.
2021.03.01
What is the diet of a manga artist like? I sincerely wish you good health sensei!
A44.
It's pretty average. In the past year, the variety of delivery options has increased and has become extremely satisfying.
Q45.
2021.03.01
I'd like to see the design proposal for volume 31 with Szayelaporro on the cover sometime, the one which Kubo-sensei previously mentioned on Twitter...!
A45.
Hasn't this been published anywhere? I'll try and see if I have it at hand.

Q46.
2021.03.01
How are the spellings of characters' names decided?
A46.
On the whole, I try to blend in spellings from as many different regions as possible, so for some characters, I was aiming for that “demarcation where it may just be legible" before making my decision.
Q47.
2021.03.01
Is Gantenbainne still alive after receiving aid from Captain Unohana in the Arrancar arc?
A47.
He's alive. The "god" he was talking about is Baraggan, so he is gathering Arrancar who still worship Baraggan and building a small nation.
Q48.
2021.03.01
By what age is one able to work towards becoming a manga artist? Past 20, is it indeed too late to start putting yourself forward? I would like to know what Kubo-sensei thinks about the appropriate age for manga artists!!
A48.
I think it doesn't matter how old you are. You don't need anyone's permission to draw manga, so I think it's best to just draw if you want to draw, and stop if you think it doesn't suit you.
Q49.
2021.03.01
Will Whiskrs STORE carry BLEACH goods? I would like BLEACH to come out with merchandise too like those being sold in Whiskrs STORE. I think I'd want to see merchandise which are actually worn by characters or goods that look like they could be sold in Soul Society! Also, it would be helpful if you could add more payment methods…
A49.
I'm also planning to make BLEACH goods, but I've created an inquiry form on Whiskrs, so if you can write "item request" in the header over there and send it to us, I'll consider that too! Also, if you would like to pay using a specific payment method, please contact us.
Q50.
2021.03.08
My question is, are Nemu-chan's hair and clothing Mayuri-sama's hobby? Or does Nemu-chan dress up according to what she likes?
A50.
It's Mayuri's hobby, or rather, Mayuri is the one altering it to match with his own ensemble. Whether or not it suits her is a separate matter.
Q51.
2021.03.08
Is there any character in BLEACH that you think has become popular, contrary to your expectations?
A51.
I thought Hisagi would never really get popular, so I'm glad that he became fairly popular.
Q52.
2021.03.08
Has there been any change in your favorite characters within your own work between now and the past?
A52.
My favorite characters experience change with every scene I draw, so they're constantly changing.
Q53.
2021.03.08
What is the origin of Rickenbacker's name?
A53.
This is the name of the founder of a guitar company. All Broombuggies are named after people who have passed away.
Q54.
2021.03.08
Do you have a close friendship with Jujutsu Kaisen's Akutami-sensei?
A54.
I had a conversation with him the other day. Right now, I'm using the shampoo Akutami-kun gave me at the time.
Q55.
2021.03.15
With the anime versions of BLEACH and BTW, sensei's characters were given a voice, but to sensei's mind, are there any characters whose voices were a particularly perfect fit?
A55.
Yoruichi is the first one who surprised me, I thought "I didn't expect this character to have this kind of voice!"
Q56.
2021.03.15
Hitsugaya who had been turned into a zombie was changed into Quincy clothes, is this Gigi's hobby?
A56.
It's Gigi's hobby.
Q57.
2021.03.15
The Quincy have made an appearance in Brave Souls, but how were the voice actors selected?
A57.
I chose them after listening to recorded voice auditions.
Q58.
2021.03.15
What kind of clothes are your favorite clothes these days?
A58.
Over-sized, whitish sweats. They're comfortable so I want to wear them until the very last moment they're considered trendy.
Q59.
2021.03.15
Does Kubo-sensei play Brave Souls? If so, who is your favorite character?
A59.
I scarcely get a chance to use them, but the visuals for heart attribute swimsuit Nelliel and technique attribute swimsuit Orihime are extremely good.
Q60.
2021.03.22
Are there any manga or movies that influenced you, sensei?
A60.
"SNATCH'" and "300" had a huge influence on me at the time they were screened.
Q61
2021.03.22
I heard that you are also involved in the audition process for the voice actors, but I am curious about what it was like in the early days of the BLEACH anime.
A61.
Ichigo was chosen after I listened to the several audition tapes which had been recorded for him. As for the Human World gang + Rukia and Renji, I listened to the tapes that the team on the other side had selected and got them to change only those who were different from their image. It's about the same level of involvement as in the live-action movie. Any subsequent casting does not involve me.
Q62.
2021.03.22
There are two types of haori for the Captains of the Gotei, but are both options provided when they take up their new posts?
A62.
At the time of their inauguration, they can choose between sleeved and sleeveless. They can even make modifications during the process, however they may be put off from doing so because it's expensive and this request will not be approved unless you have a very good reason.
Q63.
2021.03.22
When you were still working on your weekly series, were you reading other works in Jump magazine?
A63.
During its serialization, I was pretty much only ever checking for misprints in BLEACH. Between the desire to draw manga and the desire to read manga I only have the capacity to accommodate one, so when I draw I don't feel like reading and when I read I don't feel like drawing.
Q64.
2021.03.22
I have a question regarding the typeface of Rukia's name written on the cover of chapter 266. "Kuchiki" is written in brush strokes, but is there some significance as to why "Rukia" is not written in brush strokes? I'm curious about the covers with names on them since all the names of the other Shinigami are written by brush stroke, whereas part of Rukia's name is the only anomaly.
A64.
It does have a significance, but I might draw it somewhere else so it's a secret for now.

Q65.
2021.03.29
Sensei, is there any aspect in life that makes you think "this is the only thing that is non-negotiable"?
A65.
It has to be "don't let anyone interfere with your work." I'm hardly ever picky about anything else in my actual life.
Q66.
2021.03.29
The more Ichigo has grown, the more he looks like his father Kurosaki Isshin, huh? By the way, will Ichigo inherit Isshin's chest hair? I'm curious.
A66.
I want to believe in the power of Masaki's genes.
Q67.
2021.03.29
Can I safely assume that the description of Squad 1 Vice-Captain Sasakibe Chōjirō Tadaoki's Bankai - Kōkō Gonryō Rikyū - was referring to Tensō Jūrin?
Q67.
That's right.
Q68.
2021.03.29
I was trying to choose a favorite character, but I'm having a difficult time because there are too many charming characters! Please let me have at least three people to root for. Kubo-sensei, can you narrow down your favorite characters to just one in your favorite works?
A68.
Let me narrow it down. Hyoga from Saint Seiya, Nurikabe from GeGeGe no Kitaro and Gorō from Kodoku no Gourmet.
Q69.
2021.03.29
During the time Isshin was Captain, Rangiku was Vice-Captain and Hitsugaya was 3rd seat, but why did Rangiku remain a lieutenant instead of ascending to Captain?
A69.
This is because Hitsugaya is better suited for the position of Captain and also because he had already acquired Bankai. By the way, Hitsugaya had already acquired Bankai by the time he enlisted in the Gotei 13.
Q70.
2021.04.05
Hitsugaya often yells "get to work!" at Rangiku, but what tasks are so demanding that they require the qualities of a Captain class Shinigami?
A70.
Checks and approvals.
Q71.
2021.04.05
Noel-chan had a guy lick some kind of device when checking to see whether or not he had come into contact with a dragon, but does she have to replace it each time it's used? Or does she use the same one the whole time?
A71.
It is returned and magically cleaned with every use.
Q72.
2021.04.05
As explained with 90s level Kidō which appears in BLEACH, the higher the number, the stronger the spell becomes, but is it the same with spells like Blue Spark which are cast in BURN THE WITCH.
A72.
It's different. The Magic numbers from BTW have simple rules and are assigned in accordance with them.
Q73.
2021.04.05
Out of Rangiku, Orihime, Yoruichi-san, Harribel-sama, Unohana-san, Isane, Nelliel and Noel-chan, who has the largest chest?
A73.
I think I'm probably drawing Nelliel with the mental image of her being the most voluptuous.
Q74.
2021.04.05
I would like a tour of sensei's workshop!! Is that allowed!?!?
A74.
I had never considered it. I don't mind doing this if the time and situation allows it, but we'll see.
Q75.
2021.04.12
Please tell us about any changes in the vow Chad made concerning his fists. After he swore to his Abuelo that he would never swing his fists for himself, Chad did not retaliate by raising his fists for his own sake, not even during a fight where he was being beaten.
Then he met Ichigo and they both made this pact: "you won't have to hit anyone on your own account anymore, but in return you have to hit people to help me. I'll fight for you and you'll fight for me. If there's something you want to protect with your life, I'll stake my life to protect it too."
From then on, he fought for Ichigo with his fists and grew stronger to protect his friends. However, in the final chapter there is a scene where Chad has become a boxer and is aiming to become champion. Why did Chad, who up until now had vowed not to swing his fists for himself, end up using his fists in a boxing match in order to become champion in the final chapter? Was there some sort of shift in his feelings that made him think that he's ready to use his fists for himself now, or is it that someone has emerged whom he wishes to protect by becoming a champion boxer?
A75.
Nothing has changed. Chad considers boxing a martial art, not violence.
Q76.
2021.04.12
Sensei, if you were to become Captain and Vice-Captain, which divisions would you prefer to be in for each?
A76.
It seems like a heavy responsibility so I don't want it.
Q77.
2021.04.12
I joined a fan club for the first time in my life. Have you ever been a member of anyone's fan club, sensei?
A77.
It's my first time too. I am currently undergoing the unique experience of joining a fan club for the first time in my life as a member of my own fan club.
Q78.
2021.04.12
I would like to learn about Tite Kubo-sensei's family composition.
A78.
What kind of scammer-like question is this?
Q79.
2021.04.12
I'd like to know sensei's usual breakfast menu.
A79.
Aojiru, Amazake and yogurt. (*Aojiru - a green, vegetable juice made from kale. Amazake - sweet drink made from fermented rice.)
Q80.
2021.04.12
I was curious about the origins of the names of Quincy: Vollständig (Tatarforas, Hasshein, etc.) so I tried to do some research but I couldn't figure it out at all. Could they be words coined by you, sensei?
A80.
It's not so much a coined word, but rather a regular name …. I give them a name that sounds angelic and doesn't seem to have any apparent origin even if you try to look it up.
Q81.
2021.04.19
Do you prefer raw eggs or boiled eggs?
A81.
I prefer raw.
Q82.
2021.04.19
If you were to go out for a drink one-on-one, who would you go with? Personally, I'd like to go with Ikkaku.
A82.
I don't drink so I wouldn't want to go out with anyone. As long as I don't have to drink, anyone with big breasts will be fine.
Q83.
2021.04.19
Who does Kubo-sensei admire?
A83.
It's not that it's a specific person or something, but I quite admire gag manga artists.
Q84.
2021.04.19
Kubo-sensei, what app do you use when drawing illustrations on your iPad?
A84.
It's Clip Studio Paint. I really want to use Procreate (because Tada Yumi-san is using it), but Procreate is complicated.
Q85.
2021.04.19
Kubo-sensei, please tell us what you value when composing your character designs.
A85.
Place great value on first impressions and also don't be bound by it.
Q86.
2021.04.26
Sensei, did you study calligraphy? I love your drawings of course, but I also love your penmanship!!
A86.
This question reminded me that my grandmother was a calligraphy tutor. But I haven't formally studied it.
Q87.
2021.04.26
I absolutely adore the female characters you draw sensei, but do you find it challenging to draw female characters?
A87.
It's the same. People often say that female characters are difficult because they don't understand women's feelings, but it's the same even for men because people struggle to comprehend the feelings of others.
Q88.
2021.04.26
Please tell us about a movie you saw recently that you found interesting, sensei.
A88.
I watched The Equalizer the other day for the first time in a while, but it's still interesting no matter how many times I watch both 1 and 2.
Q89.
2021.04.26
At the end of the "D-TecnoLife" anime OP, Chad, Inoue, Ichigo, Ganju, Hanatarō and Ishida appear in that order, but I wonder if Ganju's bandana is white because they forgot to apply color?
A89.
This is because the character color check isn't coming to me.
Q90.
2021.04.26
In the Thousand Year Blood War arc, it was stated that no citizen of Rukongai beyond district 50 had been observed wearing sandals for over 500 years, yet as a child Rangiku was wearing a somewhat stylish pair of sandals. Did Gin provide her with those?
A90.
After meeting, Gin and Rangiku gradually moved to the safer inner districts of Rukongai. Gin's zōri sandals and Rangiku's setta sandals, which appear in the second half of the flashback, are items which each of them picked up along the way.
Q91.
2021.05.03
Is there any particular reason why Harribel and Stark are not using their first names in typical Arrancar fashion?
A91.
There is no concept of first name, middle name or last name to Arrancar.
Q92.
2021.05.03
Please tell us the reason why Kurotsuchi Mayuri started wearing headgear. Additionally, please tell us about his reason for changing that headgear.
A92.
It's his hobby.
Q93.
2021.05.03
What is sensei's favorite manga?
A93.
When I'm feeling down, I always read "Kodoku no Gourmet."
Q94.
2021.05.03
In Bleach, Zanpakutō which possess fire abilities appear within the story, but who is a character that sensei is reminded of when it comes to fire?
A94.
Wanyūdō (from GeGeGe no Kitaro.)
Q95.
2021.05.03
Do you still read Jump?
A95.
I read it and express my thoughts chaotically to those close to me. My editor also sometimes wants to hear my thoughts.
Q96.
2021.05.03
Is it a coincidence that BTW's release date falls on a full moon in Aries according to western astrology?
A96.
Really!? That is a coincidence.
Q97.
2021.05.10
Yadōmaru Lisa sometimes appears to speak with a Kansai-like dialect and sometimes she doesn't, what dialect exactly does Lisa speak with?
A97.
It's Gifu dialect which is closer to dialects from Aichi.
Q98.
2021.05.10
About the unfilled drafts and such that are in the Gallery on KlubOutside, how did those come to be preserved?
A98.
Upon completion of the inking stage, I would make a copy and write instructions on it, and when I was done with the draft I would normally throw it away. However, my parents back home told me "send it to us instead of throwing it out", so I sent it to them.

Q99.
2021.05.10
The characters that appear in Kubo-sensei's works are all highly unique in appearance and personality, and I'm always deeply moved by them. Please let us know if there is anything you keep in mind at all times when designing characters!
A99.
I make an effort to try and avoid similar faces or personalities.
Q100.
2021.05.10
Is there any possibility that the BLEACH anime will be released to the world in the form of a full remake? I think that with current technology, it would be possible to depict the world-building more beautifully.
A100.
There are no such plans but I'd like to make that happen.

Unohana’s Soul Society Arc
Quick Disclaimer: All of this is based off of memory, so I don’t have any manga panels or anything to help support my case here. Just keep that in mind as I spew my bullshit.
1. So Unohana, as far as I recall, doesn’t actually have much to do in the Soul Society arc until Aizen is “killed.” Now, it’s canon that Unohana pretty much instantly realized that something was up with the “body”, even if she couldn’t quite put her finger on what. This makes a lot of sense; her history as Soul Society’s premier healer and premier killer mean she’s probably seen more dead bodies than the rest of the Gotei 13 put together.
2. As such, Unohana is carrying on her own private investigation in the background while Hitsugaya is busy hitting Momo and getting distracted by Gin. Considering how incredibly unsurprised she is by certain reveals later, I think she probably had the general gist of what was going on by at least the time that Ukitake sent Hanataro back to her after the whole kerfluffle on the bridge.
3. Speaking of which, let’s talk about that. Hanataro knowingly and willingly aided a known fugitive and suspected murderer (even if that hypothetical timeline of events made absolutely no sense). Strictly speaking, in this instance, Hanataro is guilty of treason. On the other hand, he’s doing objectively the correct thing, and the only reason Unohana can’t do something similar is because she has no concrete proof (Aizen’s too thorough for that). So instead, she does her as her duty as Captain demands and throws Hanataro in a cell. That being said, I am convinced that even if the events that eventually happened didn’t end happening, Hanataro would have received little more than a slap on the wrist and a warning to not be such a naughty boy from now on. Like, who’s gonna stop her? Yamamoto wouldn’t give a shit, and even if he did, he’d trust her enough by this point to just let her make her own decisions about her Division. Anybody else who would care (and wasn’t Soi-Fon) would be actively on Hanataro’s side. She doesn’t need to follow an order that isn’t issued, so she’d be able to treat her 7th Seat as leniently as she damn well pleased, and I firmly believe that is a luxury she would have abused in a heartbeat.
4. Finally, we come to the execution itself. In hindsight, this moment, where Unohana must believe by now that the execution is fraudulent (considering what she does immediately after this) yet bows her head and chooses to do nothing is incredibly important to my understanding of Unohana’s character. She had to have known by now that the execution was wrong on some level, whether one considered it from a moral standpoint or a legal one. She had to have at least some understanding of what was really going on by this point. Yet, she still chose not to defend Rukia. She chose to take part in the ceremony. She is one of the only Captains who never participated in open rebellion over Rukia’s sentence, despite being perhaps the one Captain who would have known perfectly well just how horseshit it truly was.
5. That being said, the fact that the second Yamamoto disappears from the Hill, she does too, and the next time we see her she’s at the inner sanctum of Central 46 with a revived Isane in tow is just as important to my understanding of Unohana. That means that the instant Yamamoto was no longer there to ensure her compliance, Unohana immediately grabbed Isane and beelined to where the real perpetrator behind all of this ruckus was most likely to be. She is one of the Captains that did not openly rebel against Soul Society over Rukia’s execution, but she is also the only loyalist Captain who never directly engaged any of the rebels or the invaders. Rather than stay and defend a damned cause with her comrades by either supporting Soi-Fon against Yoruichi or supporting Byakuya against Ichigo (either of which would’ve spelled disaster for the protagonists), she instead fucks off to drag the real threat into the light while nobody’s around to stop her.
6. Speaking of said perpetrator, let’s talk about the confrontation. Unohana got the basics of Aizen’s plan down pretty solidly, even if there were specific details she couldn’t have known. Then, Unohana confronts Aizen with the question of whether or not he’ll fight her and Isane…and Aizen chooses to spare them both (and by extension, spare both Hinamori and Hitsugaya). Now, Aizen almost certainly did so because he needed Unohana to heal Ichigo later, but there is an alternative possibility here. Kyoka Suigetsu controls the five cardinal senses. It does not, however, affect the 6th sense, which in Bleach is the spiritual sense, and that includes the ability to sense reiatsu. Yamamoto uses that very loophole in his own attempt to kill Aizen during the fight in the fake Karakura Town. So could Unohana, being something a freak of nature when it comes to sheer combat skill, be able to use the 6th sense to fight back against Aizen even as he controlled her other five? Certainly, Aizen would have won regardless, but could that Aizen, the Aizen who has yet to retrieve the Hogyouku, be able to escape a fight with Unohana unscathed if she decided to draw her sword? I don’t think we’ll ever have a concrete answer to that question, but I like to think about it.
7. You guys remember that one scene where it’s night time, and Isane and Unohana are just chilling on a porch? That was a really nice scene. I like to imagine it’s at least a semi-regular occurrence.
tl;dr Unohana is a woman whose heart is a perfect marriage of Chaotic Evil and Neutral Good, but whose soul is Lawful Neutral.

Plot and AU Ideas
Monsters of God
Obvious one first: Unohana is one of the Sternritter; her schrift is P-The Predator, an ability that allows her take the raw power of whoever she kills for herself (specifically only allowed because it'll give Ywach that much more strength to work with when he Does His Thing later). When the Thousand-Year Blood War begins, Unohana accompanies Quilge to Hueco Mundo for the express purpose of murdering the shit out of every Arrancar and Menos she can get her hands on, taking their power for herself before eventually joining the main force assaulting Soul Society. Given their objectives, Unohana and Quilge end up teaming up for the purposes of being as capital-a Awful as humanly possible.
Necessary Oversight
A post-war AU where Quilge somehow was not brutally murdered by the myriad of enemies he made. His life is spared due to Soul Society's new "Don't Cause Trouble, Don't Get Got" policy, but nobody in their right mind would ever allow a guy like that to walk around unsupervised. Thus, he is placed under the dual stewardship of Unohana (who also survived) and Kurotsuchi. If Quilge behaves, he gets the relative tolerance of Unohana. If he doesn't, he gets the...boundless curiosity of Kurotsuchi. It's a tenuous arrangement, but it's worked so far. So far.
Cyberpunk AU
Unohana is a veteran melee-focused Solo Edgerunner. Quilge is the biggest Corpo scumbag that Vandenreich Incorporated has to offer. Unohana works where the most money and best fighting is to be had, which means that Quilge is sometimes a lucrative employer and sometimes her mortal enemy. Quilge keeps employing her because she's the best at what she does (and what she does isn't very nice), but since she's just as likely to take jobs against VI as she is to be hired by them, it's a very unstable arrangement.

Miscellaneous Headcanons Post #1
1. So quick disclaimer: I am not and never shall be an expert on how all of the Bleach Metaphysics actually work. That being said, my basic understanding of things is that if something happens to either the Soul King or the Balance of Souls, everything is kinda totally fucked. With this basic bitch interpretation in mind, my Unohana is an extremist when it comes to making sure these two things keep ticking along. There is no sacrifice too great, no war crime too horrible, and indeed no method too extreme when the alternative is the death of everyone everywhere.
2. That being said, loyalty comes first. Her loyalty to Yamamoto (and in any universe where she survives her fight with Kenpachi, Kyoraku) is all-encompassing and absolute. No matter how much she might disagree, no matter what her personal values demand, no matter how much it may personally disgust her, she will set all of it aside and do as she’s told so long as he is the one telling her to do it. She and Yamamoto both know this, and they have actually developed some loopholes to help them get around this when her doing what he’d be forced to order her to do would be…inconvenient. Perhaps the most simple of these is also the most childish: she can’t follow any order he hasn’t given her. Note how she’s one of the only sympathetic and reasonable Captains who didn’t openly rebel during Rukia’s execution, but immediately took the opportunity to collect Isane and fuck off to the Central 46 chamber once Yamamoto was very conveniently no longer on Sokyoku Hill to make sure she stayed.
3. Officially, Rukia’s Sode no Shirayuki is considered the most beautiful Zanpakuto in Soul Society. However, to Unohana, the most beautiful Zanpakuto in Soul Society is actually Yamamoto’s Bankai, Zanka no Tachi.
4. Minazuki is an it, and Unohana will not tolerate anyone who disrespects it’s identity.
5. Unohana is extremely put out by the Soul Society dating scene not treating Isane like the absolute catch she is, but is also the type who would be loudly and pointedly sharpening Minazuki in the corner if anybody actually tried anything.
6. So I’m too much of a brainless putz to ever properly portray this, but Unohana’s actually really fucking smart. Like, not even headcanon wise; according to the official graph thing, Unohana has a perfect 100 in intelligence, ten points higher than Kyoraku and tying with Aizen (as does Ukitake, I feel I should note). This means that, even if her focus is different, she’s actually just as much of a smartypants as Urahara. It just doesn’t get shown off as much since she didn’t decide to specialize in Crazy Ghost Science like he and Aizen did.

On God I was working on the AEIWAM Outline today but I also got "The AEIWAM cast, post-fic, go to the Aquarium" brainrot so have this:
It kicks off with Retsu seeing Kenpachi deep in thought for once and asking him what he's mulling over and after a moment he asks: "Are there zoos for fish?" "...Pardon?" "There are lotsa fish," he reasons, "-at least as many as there are land animals, but they're all really hard to see, because they're in the water." Retsu considers him for a moment before gently asking "Do you mean The Aquarium?" "The what?"
Retsu, texting Ichigo in the Gotei-13 Groupchat at 2AM: I need you to acquire tickets and human chaperones for a group field trip to The Aquarium Ichigo, who fears her above everyone else in soul society: Yes, Captain. Retsu: If it was just the SWA I'd only ask for tickets but you know what The Lads are like. Ichigo: Unfortunately, Yes. Ichigo: I'll bring the first aid kit, zip ties, duct tape and candy. Retsu: Good man.
Upon Arrival, Kenpachi has already been lectured about "You ARE NOT ALLOWED to fight and/or eat the fish, no matter how annoying and/or delicious they look
Turns out they were lecturing the wrong guy because it's Byakuya that develops a personal rivalry with a grouper ("It's smug expression disgusts me." "Captain that is a FISH.") and has to be talked out of climbing into the tank to fight it
after that he has to hold hands with Rukia or Renji.
Rukia discovers Sea Bunnies and ends up crying about them.
Yachiru gets to see them feeding the Piranha and it's a Spiritual Experience for her.
Later, she gets to see them feed the sharks and it's an EVEN BETTER spiritual Experience.
Hitsugaya learns Penguins are real and not just 'made up for christmas, like the flying reindeer and the guy with the suspect toy charity'.
Momo lights into him about "Penguins are my favorite animal, they've been my favorite animal for decades YOU THOUGHT THEY WERE FAKE?" Hitsugaya: "YOU ALSO USED TO LIKE UNICORNS!" Momo: "THOSE ARE ALSO REAL!" Orihime: "They are?" Momo: "...I keep forgetting they're extinct in the living world."
Tousen gets to experience the Touch Pool and the docents realize what's up so they start pulling out the cool stuff like sea hares and moray eels because he's an adult that can be trusted to pet things gently.
When the group comes back to collect him the staff is letting him hand feed a Pacific Red Octopus, and Yachiru immediately demands she be allowed to as well.
Retsu quietly releases Minazuki into the stingray touch pool so she can "go play with her cousins :)"
Kenpachi and Yamamoto asking "Can we eat it?" about every. single. animal.
The extremely dedicated docent that is *just* Psychic enough to know something is up with this group of chucklefucks so they're following them through the aquarium, but is also genuinely having fun answering every fucking insane question these guys ask.
Yoruichi was not anticipating there to be Tigers at the aquarium (they ARE semi-aquatic and part of a larger exhibit on Tropical Riparian Ecosystems) and she is SUPER NOT JEALOUS of how much Urahara and Baby Labcat like them.
There is also an exhibit with an Anaconda that the docent finds Rangiku staring at with a forlorn expression. Docent: "It's okay, not everyone is a fan of snakes." Rangiku: "What? Oh, no, I love snakes. They just also remind me of my Ex." Docent: *WomanTryingToDoMath.Meme* Docent: *Considers the size of the Anaconda* Docent: "...Ah. Yeah, I'd miss a man like that too."
Renji, Ichigo and Ikkaku going "Its YOU!" to each other over every single red, orange or round creature.
Kenpachi going "IT ME!!" about the black urchins before anyone can get him though.
Shunsui pointing at the sea otters that are holding hands and declaring, tears in his eyes "Jushiro! It's US!" Ukitake then prompty ruins the moment by telling Shunsui Fun Facts about Sea Otters like how they're basically giant marine weasels that will absolutely drown each other's young and maul anyone dumb enough to touch one.
The Dolphins all love Komamura and he is just a little bit smug about this.
Relatedly, not sure if its funnier for Komamura to show up in a Human Gigai, or as Tousen's "Service Dog"
Human Gigai: -Komamura is weirdly stony-faced and sort of intimidating and everyone thinks he's stressed out but really he's used to making micro-expressions and gesturing with his ears so he sorta just forgot how to move his face. -Still Nine and a Half feet tall and smacking his head on Everything
Service Dog: -"He's uh. A Shepherd. Mix." Ichigo says to the aforementioned Docent about what is very obviously a Bigass Timber Wolf. -Sajin doesn't give a rat's ass about his cover and keeps talking to Tousen while in dog form. If anyone looks at him funny he makes direct eye contact and says "Woof. Bark."
Yamamoto vs. Escalator. Catastrophic Beard Incident. 2 injured, 16 Dead but they were like that already.
Ukitake, Retsu, and Tama all Not Shutting Up With Facts About Every Fish Ever because they all share a Special Interest.
They briefly lose Byakuya in the Jellyfish exhibit because Rukia and Renji both thought the other one was holding Byakuya's hand and he is *enchanted* by the wall-sized tank of Moon Jellies.
Ikkaku attempting to talk Yachiru out of getting the ridiculously oversized Great White Shark plushie only for Zaraki to get it for both of them instead.
Everyone had a great time and is Very Tired and so they don't realize anything is amiss until they get back to Ichigo's place and the nightly news comes on. "Hey ichigo?" Yuzu calls. "Why is Ms. Unohana on TV?" The news has a story with a still image of Retsu on CCTV and "Authorities are looking for this woman who somehow ADDED a fully intact and highly venomous short-tailed stingray to the aquarium's touch pool" "OH MY GOD WE FORGOT MINAZUKI!"

🗣👋 gently slides these over out of curiosity
Plot and AU Ideas
Commonality
Okay, so this one is a bit weird, but bare with me. The basis of this AU is that back when Aizen was a wee lad first getting inducted into the Gotei 13, he hadn't quite perfected his Perfect Friend Man mask yet. Unohana happens to meet him during this time and-having spent several centuries by this point perfecting her own Perfect Mom mask-instantly realizes what he's doing and what that implies. So she takes him aside one day and tries to talk to him about it. Due to their individual psychoses being so very different, Unohana isn't quite able to fully connect with him, not like he needed someone to. However, she came the closest, and more to the point, she bothered to try. That was more than anyone else ever managed, and Aizen never forgot that despite himself. This would end up developing one of two ways: either he appreciates the attempt and fucks with her minimally because of it, or he becomes deeply bitter that she gave him a glimmer of hope and dared to fall short causing him to specifically target her for torment. However, in this particular AU, her experience, control over her emotions, and especially the fact that she saw a glimpse of what lay behind Aizen's mask means she'd be exceptionally difficult to fuck with by Aizen's standards. He'd have to be extremely careful with his "revenge", but given who Aizen is, I'm pretty sure he'd take as much time as he needed to see it through.
Classical Myth AU
Unohana and Aizen are both gods within a pantheon. Unohana is the goddess of life and death, while Aizen is the god of progress and ambition. They end up having debates semi-frequently; Unohana would see things through the lens of the connection between life and death, and thus would see most everything as inherently connected and cyclical, which Aizen-ever focused on replacing the old with something better and new-would inevitably be at odds with. In this AU, Aizen is working to become a being that has transcended beyond godhood; while Unohana often disagrees with Aizen's viewpoint, she doesn't suspect just what type of person he actually is until he starts a great schism as part of his overall plan to ascend.
Fantasy AU
Unohana was once the terror of the battlefield, a feared and reviled madwoman who slaughtered all who dared to oppose her. However, after a certain traumatic incident scarred her psyche, she gave up her wanton bloodshed and took up the ways of the healer. After some years, once she'd established herself as quite the competent support, she is approached by a friendly and reasonable man named Aizen. He told her he was searching for a magical artifact called the Hougyoku that would allow him to save one he cared for, and that he was willing to pay handsomely for fellow adventurers willing to aid him in retrieving it. Unbeknownst to Unohana, however, Aizen sought the Hougyoku not for altruism, but for power. With it, he could transcend his mortality and become an Archlich, a type of lich that had no need to sell its soul, and thus was still its own master. Why he sought this goal was something only the master manipulator knew, but he was willing to do anything to achieve it. Unohana, having no reason to doubt Aizen, unwittingly began to aid the man's mad quest for power...

Post Canon AU
Snow White Unohana Yachiru
Kenpachi and Isane have decided to make a proper memorial for Unohana and go down to Muken to retrieve her Zanpakuto.
Instead of finding a decayed or no corpse , Unohana is there looking the same as she did when he killed her decades ago.
Insane thinks she may still be alive and sure enough, there is a small flicker of her spiritual energy.
Kenpachi is over joyed. His perfect battle foe / murder wife is alive and he gives her a teary kiss on her forehead.
Unohana wakes up and is pissed.

Oh god after reblogging that gif of Tenjiro and Unohana I HAVE to talk about their relationship and dynamic
Because like, if you think about it, Unohana has to be Tenjiro's senior. At least by rank, if not by age. And now that dude has surpassed her and sits atop the heavens protecting the Soul King - and she's being told off like a kid in front of her colleagues.
Unohana is obviously unhappy at this - not only did she just lose her oldest colleague (regardless of whether she genuinely likes him or not, Unohana definitely respects him enough to stick around for such a long time) in a battle against their oldest enemy, she wasn’t part of the fight because she had to survive for something bigger that’ll come up later. On top of the medical relief she had to provide for the people she works closely with who were just stomped out like bugs (which she must be pretty stressed about - coordinating medical efforts and such), she also has to put aside her grieving for Yamamoto and possible anxiety at their oldest enemy returning (because obviously this generation can’t deal with them). And now this man who’s her junior comes around and acts like he knows better. Of course she’s pissed.
To top that off, she’s told that she has, quote, ‘more important things to do’. In one fell swoop, her life is completely upended - while she obviously enjoyed existing as Unohana Yachiru, at some point she decided to settle down and become Unohana Retsu, which means a more peaceful life. It’s clear that she’s unsettled by this, but she goes along with it anyways and goes out in a bang.
Meanwhile Tenjiro acts like he knows better - just like the attitude that the rest of the Royal Guard holds, really - because he’s the ‘First Officer’ of the Squad. I initially thought that the ranking in the Squad is based on order of their time of entry, but that can’t be true because Nimaiya, the creator of the zanpakutou, was the ‘Third Officer’ when he’s clearly 2000+ years old and precedes even the Shinigami and Gotei 13 themselves. However, it was known that Tenjiro was a Shinigami captain in the past - given that he’s not in the OG lineup, he has to be Unohana’s junior. Yes, he may have been the progenitor of healing techniques (in a mass scale, at least), but I find it strange that he doesn’t really interact with at least a level of respect with her, which is highly important in Japanese society and touted around in Seireitei and the Gotei 13. Also he doesn’t react at Yamamoto’s death at all? No visible reaction, at least, which I found strange if he’d served in the Gotei 13 before. It almost feels like his backstory of being a captain was an afterthought by Kubo.
Anyways, just imagine this guy who joined a company later than you did, got promoted to CEO earlier than you did, and comes back after the company is bankrupt to trash you. That’s probably how Unohana feels.

I need to share or I might die, pass away, disintegrate even. @p-riama dawg I am trying to keep this as decently in character as possible and putting it into writing.
Also I want to make this believable as if Unohana did survive the Muken fight and is so fucking upset about it; and is in the process of recovering from that deeply desolate feeling. Knowing she has a place within not only Kenpachi’s heart, but within the hearts all the people within the Seireitei. She has more to give.
