i remember like one week out of 2022 (Gainax ending) but everyone who remembers says it was the most disturbed and out-of-character i’ve ever acted. first 5 months, i was confined to my room because my mom was spraying chemicals in the house, next 7 months i went to the hospital and my mom lied to the psychologists that i was psychotic and hearing voices and they put me on a med called Zyprexazydis. i know that when I was on it my brain just didn’t retain information. i was failing my classes, i couldn’t learn, my personality changed and no one irl or online wanted anything to do with me, i went from a person with many hobbies and interests to incapable of doing anything but scrolling short-form content on social media (and pissing people off online), and i slept 16 hours a day. but mom thought i was ok as long as i stayed out of her way and didn’t have the energy to inconvenience her or argue. i feel so scared of what i don’t remember. i feel like i’ve lost myself and would do anything not to have this physical damage to my brain.

Medical assault and battery is so fucking normalized, and that includes psychiatric care.

I think the last time I explained in full was around a year ago so I don’t blame you for asking.

The long and short of it is that my parents were very abusive. They (though mostly my mom) lied about me having violent tendencies despite me only being “violent” when I would try to defend myself from abuse, and this resulted in me being institutionalized at 10 in a child ward. I try not to share as much about what getting out was like due to the fact I have stalkers irl that could potentially use that information against me

I quickly came to understand that a lot of my “diagnoses” were a crock of shit. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia despite the fact you aren’t supposed to diagnose children with that to my knowledge, as well as Oppositional Defiant Disorder when I fought back against treatment I didn’t need. What I needed was parents that didn’t smoke meth and beat the shit out of me.

So that’s basically the reason. I fight back against the notion that all ward patients are just getting “the treatment they need” when I’m living proof that’s not the case 100% of the time.

But, and I always have to clarify this: being “anti psychiatry” doesn’t mean that I want there to be no form of mental health treatment anywhere at all. It means being against a psychiatric system that thrives on keeping informed consent from its patients, doping you up on drugs that negatively impact your life (again, to be clear, I’m talking about prescriptions where the negative side effects are outweighing the good) and gaslighting you into thinking the abuse you suffered at their hands was “for your own good”

I really appreciate you and others perspectives regarding anti-psych activism. I've always felt similarly but didn't always have the best way to describe it, as I've never had to go to a psych ward. Though the threat was always there with a kind of "Well if things are as bad as you say, you should WANT to go to one," which is just cruel if you ask me. How is anyone supposed to access health care if just being honest can get you incarcerated?

Oh for sure! One always has to question why the knee jerk reaction of many people hearing about your mental issues is “well go to the psych ward” instead of “Is there anything I can do to help you?”
