I'm a Lucy Carlyle defender (how many posts have I started with that exact sentence) but less in a "she's never done anything wrong in her life" way and more of a "this is a female character who was written with full agency to respond realistically and behave accordingly in regards to her age, maturity level, and environment, which includes being allowed to respond negatively to circumstances that don't necessarily warrant a negative response, and we need more female characters written like this" way.
The important thing about beloved Lucy Carlyle is that she's allowed to make bad choices but she is not vilified for them. And she's allowed to come back from them and try to make things better, even if it takes her a little while to get there. She's also just allowed to make choices in general, good or bad.
She's allowed to be angry. She's allowed to be scared. She's allowed to be snarky. She's allowed to be sad. She's allowed to be defensive. She's allowed to be sentimental. She's allowed to behave the exact way a real person would in her circumstances. She's allowed to have emotional agency. She's not written to fulfill a trope or a fantasy. She's a whole person.
And we need more characters like her.

I think it's hilarious that reading the books you get the idea that Lucy is a shabby, unshapely girl with the style and aura of a square-shouldered, heavy-assed potato, and at the same time, Lockwood is obviously spellbound by her appearance the second he first laid eyes on her - even before witnessing her talent, not to mention that she's also crushed on by Kipps AND Holly.
It makes me believe that the way she is described in the books is based entirely on the distorted yet somewhat typical self-perception of any teenage girl in modern society - and the fact that a middle-aged Brit bloke writes five books just to let us know that we, all that we have been that exact teenage girl once, are loved, valued and respected by someone as precious a person as Lockwood, makes me feel so much love for him.

The scene where they arrive at the cemetery in ep 4 and Lockwood and George are pointing out the ghost cultists, gravediggers, sensitives, night watch etc. to Lucy has the same energy as a teen comedy scene where someone is explaining where the popular girls, nerds, stoners etc. sit in the cafeteria.

Something I haven't seen mentioned - at the beginning of The Hollow Boy, Lockwood decides that they need a new agent to help support the team since they're getting burnt out on an overload of cases. Lucy feels insecure about adding a new element to the group dynamic, so she suggests maybe they should just get an assistant instead.
I see people give Lockwood a hard time about hiring Holly while Lucy was out of town... but he TOOK HER ADVICE! He didn't hire an agent, he specifically hired an assistant at Lucy's suggestion. He said he would think about it, and he genuinely did take it under advisement! I think it just shows the amount of trust and respect he has for her at this point that she can supersede his own initial suggestion.
Also, it's sad because he's so excited when Lucy gets back, thinking he's done something right like "Hey Luce, look I did what you said. And now we don't all have to be so overwhelmed all the time. And maybe we can start going on cases together again. Isn't this great!" Meanwhile Lucy is just fuming in her own insecurity.

[Book Spoilers]
I know there's a lot of discussion about Lockwood only realizing his feelings for Lucy after she leaves at the end of THB, but I'm more inclined to believe that he was fully aware of his feelings, and Lucy's judgement is just too clouded by her own insecurity to acknowledge it...

The boy who craves publicity and notoriety, his dreams now coming to life, gaining fame and success, who is pictured in a heroic pose, instead is focused on... Lucy's knee? Her KNEE, really Lockwood, that's what caught your attention?!?! I mean please, this boy is a S-I-M-P!!!
For me, this line is on par with "I found Lucy"...
Tumblr media
Also this line in chapter 3...
Tumblr media
Uh-huh yeah, I bet he is...

Thinking about how we’ll never get to see Lucy being jealous when Holly comes to work at Lockwood and Co. We were deprived honestly.

My favorite genre of fiction is “the vibes here are somehow horrifying and warm and cozy at the same time”. Like, yeah we’re gonna fight the cosmic horror but in matching sweaters one of our teammates made type of vibe.
