Marvel: About Growing Up

So, I recently watched this incredible video  and I’ve realized that Thanos as the ultimate villain is pure poetry.

Basically all the MCU characters start out as childish and selfish–their fist solo films all are about growing up and getting over/coming to terms with their childhood. If there one phrase that could sum up this idea, it’s “daddy issues”. We see this with Tony and his dad–an absent father who rarely showed him approval.

Tony’s need for said approval blinded him to the point of seeing Obadiah Stane as a healthy father figure. We all know how that went.

Not to mention how Tony is now Peter’s father figure and, because of his own experience with Howard Stark, Tony doesn’t know how to be.

We see this familial theme in Thor too, where Odin is an imperfect father that unwittingly pins his two children against one another.

Not to mention his failure where Hela is concerned.

Odin just wanted to make sure his kingdom was secure.

The theme continues with Scott Lang, who used to live the life of a criminal just to keep his daughter taken care of. 

Scott just wanted to be a perfect father.

Meanwhile, Scott’s surrogate father is Hank Pin. Who basically hands him over the title of Ant-Man, just like Odin planned to hand Thor the title of King.

And just as T’Chaka had to unexpectedly give T’Challa the kingdom after his assassination. 

Finally, there’s the tragic case of Star Lord, who lived his entire adolescent life without ever knowing his real father and who was instead raised by a somewhat abuse father figure who often threatened to “eat” him (though we later learned that was for his own protection).

And when Star Lord actually meets his dad …

He learns he was responsible for his mother’s death and that Yondu was the only man who ever really loved him as a father.

So, what does it all mean? Isn’t is perfect, just perfect that the ultimate villain the Avengers face is Thanos, a man that goes around committing mass genocide for “the planet’s own good”. Thanos is the ultimate tyrannical parent. He’s motivated by the idea that “daddy knows best” and often says so. Thanos calls just about everyone he meets, “my child”. 

Yet those he actually considers his children, he abuses.

Needless to say, MARVEL knows what it’s doing. This is pure poetry.
