A detective starts pursuing him after he captures his daughter. I am choosing not to continue to watch this series.Strangeland (1. Maybe if they could’ve squeezed a little more exposition in the dialogue between all the F-bombs they might have had something more interesting.

Don’t peg me as a prude, I am ex-Navy and swear like the sailor I am, but there is a point where it just seems unnatural and too much and I feel this series crossed that line. In addition, there was an overuse of profanity that just seemed out of place. Even though there were some very interesting themes looking to be explored and in addition to a high production value, the characters did not connect with me. I am sure that The Man Who Fell to Earth will gather a fan base and I am happy for the show. This means we need to pick and choose those shows that interest us, that speak to us. In this golden age of genre media, there are so many wonderful series out there, that no one person can watch them all. The concept of showing us an end result and then flashing back to the beginning and showing how said result was accomplished is a cliched and an overused device which especially does not work for this show. He is recounting before a crowd at a product launch how he learned humanity. The series tries to offset this, by first showing us the future nice-guy Faraday who is the leader of a high-tech firm, like his predecessor, and basically worshipped by fans. In today’s era the facial expressions and character reactions not only felt cartoonish and forced but made the leading character a bit unlikeable. I found Chiwetel’s performance a bit over the top, a bit too “strange”, I am sure it is equal to Bowie’s performance (which I either cannot remember or didn’t see), but that was in a different era performed by a star known for the outlandish. Unfortunately, the series does not handle this theme as well as it should have.

Little has changed in the premise from film to series, it is built on the tried-and-true story telling of a stranger in a strange land that must learn how to be more human to survive, usually by befriending a human who teaches him the true heart of humanity. With the help of a fallen scientist, Justin Falls (Naomie Harris), the two must work together to not only save Anthea, but reverse the damage we humans have done to our own planet. Forty-six years later and the story of alien, Thomas Jerome Newton (Bill Nighy takes over the David Bowie role) continues as a new Anthean who calls himself Faraday (Chiwetel Ejiofor) comes to Earth to find a solution to save their drought ridden planet. The film has developed a cult following for the use of its surreal imagery and is considered an important work of science fiction cinema.

A very good story all around, if you are comparing it to other magical girl series out there. Then again, the sci fi aspect is interesting enough to win over some older fans too, though the "twist" isn’t too exciting (I’ve seen the same twist in a few series). For me, an adult, I didn’t find it to be as interesting, but I still can acknowledge that this is a good series for those that really enjoy younger age group shoujo. Not only are there cute creatures and magic powers, but there are friendships that are formed and a feel good ending that will make any young person happy. Young girls, in particular, will eat this up with a spoon. If anything, you might be wary of it because it very, very clearly is aimed at younger folks. In general, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is a magical girl series at heart, but you shouldn’t let that influence your decision to watch it (since it becomes quite serious and sci fi related in the second half). Let’s just say quite a bit of the series takes place outside Earth itself! Truly a unique magical girl series if I ever saw one, but then again, magical girl series aren’t exactly my forte. The last half is heavy on character development, and again, turns very sci fi in nature. Instead of focusing on essentially a monster of the week type plot, we see Nanoha and her interactions with Fate, a rival magical girl who is after the Seeds for her own mysterious purposes. Luckily, around episode 5 or 6 of the 13 episode series, the story takes a turn into sci fi land and becomes really interesting, and totally different than what you’ve been watching already. Each episode follows Nanoha and Yuuno as they try to seal another Jewel Seed, and of course, Nanoha transforms in each episode as well. These stones, when activated by a person (or animal, or plant), grant the being their wishes which, needless to say, usually causes chaos to ensue.Īdmittedly, at first, this seems like the same old magical girl series. Powerful stones called Jewel Seeds are loose within the planet, and only Nanoha’s power can assist him in reclaiming the stones so their power can be subdued. One day near the woods, she runs across a ferret that is injured, but much to her dismay, this is no ordinary ferret! His name is Yuuno and he hails from another world, and he needs Nanoha’s help. Our tale begins with Nanoha, a young girl who attends school and lives with her family (who include characters from Triangle Heart: Miyuki and Kyoya). StoryWhen I first turned on Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, I was expecting a boring and generic magical girl type series that might just put me to sleep.

Vulcan was known as the god of fire in Roman mythology and is considered to be the Roman equivalent of the Greek God Hephaestus. Neptune had only one temple in Rome, which is said to date back to 203 BC. Neptunalia, the festival symbolizing Neptune, was held in the height of the summer months to ward off draughts when the water tables were at their lowest amid the height of the summer season. If an improper sacrifice was performed, it would have to be rectified later with appropriate compensation in order to not displease god. Neptune is one of the few Gods in Roman mythology to whom the sacrifice of a bull is considered to be sacred. Neptune was also associated with Horses, as in the case of his Greek counterpart Poseidon. The ancient Romans adopted the concept of the deity from the Indo-Europeans, who had very little knowledge about the seas as they lived inland and had access only to freshwater streams. Salacia, the Goddess of saltwater, was his wife, and it is said that while she ruled over the seas, Neptune was the one who would rule over the rivers and lakes.Īlthough Neptune was considered the god of the seas, it is more likely that he was a freshwater deity. Neptune was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto and is the ruler of the earthly world and its waters. He is considered the God of Freshwater and the Sea, the Roman equivalent of Poseidon. Many of the festivals honoring Mars were held in the month of March and October, and chariot races were said to be held in honor of the God of War. It was said to vibrate at impending war or any other danger relating to violence or weapons, as in the case of the assassination of Julias Caesar. The spear of mars was said to be a powerful artifact, and it was believed that it was stored in the Regia, the residence of the Kings of Rome. Mars was depicted as youthful and beardless, with a helmet, wearing armor, and holding his spear in his hands. The only sacrifice of horses to be carried out in ancient Rome was that of the October horse sacrifice to the God Mars, and one of the few instances where the sacrificed animal would not be consumed. Many of them were sacred to the gods, and also, the Romans believed that they did not have the authority to sacrifice something which was not theirs to give. It was mostly domestic animals that would be sacrificed in their honor and not wild animals. Mars was also associated with animal sacrifices conducted routinely in his honor, mainly that of intact oxen, sheep, and pigs. The Woodpecker, wolf, and bear were considered to be his sacred animals, the woodpecker being the guardian of the woods and herbs was said to peck out the eyes of anyone who would approach the herbs sacred to the god. He was the son of Jupiter and Juno, the Roman equivalent of Zeus and Hera. The month of March was named after him, and many of his festivals were held during this month. Unlike Ares, who was treated with contempt and was considered a destabilizing force in Greek mythology, Mars was considered to be the preserver of Peace. Mars was called the god of war and was the Roman equivalent of the Greek God Ares.
