Critical Performance Review #LDNproject
On October 15th I attended the matinee performance of ā€˜Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’, at the Aldwych Theatre, London. Based on the beautiful true story of Carole King, a ā€˜chart-topping music legend’. Her career starts in the New York record business in the 60s as a teenager, where she sells her first hit Will You Love Me Tomorrow after persuading her mother this is the correct career path for her to lead. Entering into her twenties, she soon becomes a mother to one and a wife to be, this doesn’t stop her determination and drive as King and her husband, Gerry Goffin, are now developing their phenomenal career together, writing for the biggest acts in rock n’ roll (including The Monkees and The Shirelles). Up until now, all of King’s life has been pieced together perfectly but soon her personal life starts crumbling and starts intruding on the career. She becomes lost and weak, yet this is how she starts to find her own wonderful voice. King realises that her true happiness comes first and decides to live her own life, her rise to stardom is phenomenal, nothing is stopping her and she soon becomes one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Classics include You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman, You’ve Got A Friend, and Locomotion.
The musical is directed my Marc Bruni and it has 28 cast members who sing, dance and act. The music is by, Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Cynthia Weil and Barry Man, a live orchestra was playing. Ā As an audience member and looking around the auditorium, it was clear the majority of the audience came for the music. The story was very fast paced which never let the audience zone out as there was always something new to think about, this was also beneficial as it allowed a large number of songs to be performed. The lead, playing Carole King, also played the piano on stage. The well-known songs left us feeling very uplifted and powerful as the words and songs were portrayed through real emotion and the actors really connected with the audience, making us feel involved and part of the action.
The set was very simple, which made the story clear for the audience to follow and understand. A stand-alone piano was always present on stage, conveying the strong influence music had on both King and the 60s era.
The 60/70s style of clothing was worn, the costumes allowed us to pinpoint the era of the musical.
Overall, the production of ā€˜Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ was brilliant, both the production and performance was executed with talent and sophistication. I think the success of the musical is brought by the positivity expressed, the performance created a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere, allowing the audience to watch with ease and happiness. The audience had a large age range, from young children to an older generation, showing the musical is targeted at all, I couldn’t agree more as it was an enjoyable and entertaining musical that I would recommend to anyone looking for some fun and optimism.

Personal Reflection #LDNproject
Looking back on the past two weeks and reflecting upon the #LDNproject, I have learnt and gained knowledge of both performances and culture related events in my new home town, London. I have always been aware of the amount and variety of performance/culture related events in London, but, I can first remember looking into #LDNproject and investigating the array of options and being amazed by the amount of events I found. Emphasising, why I was able to spend so much time visiting and learning about events and opportunities in the city. I found the project enjoyable yet it was very fast paced, all because it was very time consuming traveling to the events situated in various locations around London and I knew I had a time limit. However, I discovered so many fascinating pieces of art that I was very interested to learn about and expand any prior knowledge.
I decided to select a variety of events; a musical theatre show, ā€˜Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ showed top west end performers. The art in Brick Lane and Camden Lock, unique pieces of street art and pop up market stalls, selling a diverse range of independent goods. The Theatre CafĆ©, a visit where I was able to be surrounded by musical theatre lovers and able to network with others spontaneously. The British Museum, allowed me to expand my knowledge and take in all the magnificent, famous pieces of art.
This showed me a diverse range of the arts around London and I felt it was a good choice as I was able to experience different art forms contrasting my training in the studios to become a performer. After my visits I am able to say every one brought a different and new experience to the last. Some being very interactive and spontaneous comparing to others being intellectual and formal.
The #LDNproject gave me the freedom to explore London and to fully make the most of my outings, researching and analysing my chosen events. I found some diverse and hidden beauties of London. The project allowed me to get to know my peers, we planned some of the trips together and it was lovely being able to spent time and discover our new home together. I was also able to share my experiences with both peers and friends through social media, showing positive benefits; sharing and communicating information with others. It enabled me to connect with my friends and family from all over the world and allow direct interaction. I was able to let them know highlights, benefits and the disadvantages.
From the experience of the project, it has allowed me to fully involve and engage in London life, spending the next three years studying here I am now aware of main attractions, art forms and cultural events happening right on my doorstep. #LDNproject allowed me to explore and visit art forms, benefiting from new experiences.
Being new in the performing arts industry, I have now expanded my knowledge for the future and it has given me an insight into performing arts life and familiarity for when having to research and investigate into other projects.
