Fair point, but Kris can put us in and out of them ( in normal route )without we having a say on it so it's not like we have much of a choice in this either it's not like we go out of our way to possess their body (they probably need us to stay alive tbf) Even then I think it's fair for them to be angry it's a shit situation anyway

I think a lot of people in the fandom overestimate A LOT how powerful we are as a soul, like we are some kind of eldritch monster which is far from the truth ( at least in the normal route).

The soul is actually so weak outside of a body that Kris can subjugate us with no problem whatsoever and have full control of us, there isn't even one instance in the normal route where we take control of them without their consent and the second they don't view us as useful they can just throw us out of their body (despite looking like a painful process).

Even when we're controlling Kris body they have much more agency than they are given credit for, for example when you are trying to ask Noelle for information they will purposely ask the question without any context so she doesn't understand it, if you're too rude to ralsei they will change the wording of what we were going to say to change the context of it. They're only giving us the illusion that we're in control when in reality they have the upper hand most of the time and are only using the soul to help in whatever agenda they have( they also might need us to keep themself alive). As of right now everyone aware of the soul sees us not as sentient beings with emotions but as a tool used to further their own goals.

As far as we know the only moments that the soul is truly a force to be afraid of is inside the dark world where we are the only known entity that can close dark fountains and even destroy Titans, which is most likely part of the reason we are so important (even to Carol/ the knight) to have around even if we are basically going against their plans.

How it feels to deal with Kris in a pacifist run

I Also like to see the soul as it's own character cause as you said it makes things more interesting like in the fandom space the soul is often treated as some kind of monster, even though as far as we know we had no agency of being in this situation at all.

Also we can only control Kris for as long as they want us to control them, they are the one that have the power to put us in and out of their body, and they never give us instructions of what we should do, we just have to Improvise and try to do the right thing. But no matter what we do at the end of the day we are always thrown inside a cage. We're just a tool that is pushed aside the second we aren't useful anymore.

When writing about the normal route in Deltarune I like to ignore the meta aspect of the game and treat the Soul as its own character instead of just the player's self insert because it automatically makes its relationship with Kris way more complex and nuanced. Like. We all know Kris has it bad having their autonomy taken from them and whatever shady thing they got going on with Carol and the Knight, and of course they hate having to let the Soul possess them even if they need it, but many people have pointed out that the lack of autonomy is mutual and it becomes much more interesting the second the Soul becomes a person itself and not a player that objectively isn't so affected since, you know, we are real people in the real world- Imagine this: You are a being that just recently began to exist. A mysterious voice starts talking to you and offers you a life. They offer you an existence, they help you make a body of your own that you pour all your efforts into making perfect. You are excited to begin your life and explore the world... only to have it all taken from you at the last second. Suddenly you are in a body, yes, but it's not YOUR body, it's someone else's, with their own life and personality and they don't appreciate you being here as much as you. Now you have to pretend to be this other person, because what else are you supposed to do? But it's hard, because you don't have all the memories everyone else keeps referencing and you are painfully aware you keep acting out of character, the other conscious person inside the body makes sure you are aware.

Then you get thrown into a whole adventure and become the hero of a prophecy, with new people who don't really know the body you are inhabiting so you can be more yourself. You make friends, you both make friends and it's fun! But there is a constant reminder that no matter what, you both are screwd up. The original person loves these friends too, but they don't really know them all that well because it's always you at the wheel. You love your friends, but they don't know you because you have always only ever interacted with them behind as Kris.

You want to help. You want to be useful. You don't like hurting Kris, but you also can't help resenting them as much as they resent you because everything you have is really only theirs, and they hate you because everything they have is being taken by you. They have some hidden agenda going on and seem to be working with your enemies. You want to trust them but neither of you can or are willing to communicate. If you ever give up, the world ends. You are three days old.

metaphor's a very fascinating game bc youll be going around talking to regular jrpg npcs as usual and then one of them will open a conversation with something so racist that you have to imagine the traveling boy is just staring at them like this
