“While a number of historians have studied St. Malo and its inhabitants, documents about the site are scarce. Academics often cite an 1883 Harper’s Weekly article by journalist Lafcadio Hearn, who traveled to the site in search of the Filipino settlers.
Hearn described an eerie trip through the marsh that led to a hidden village of ‘fantastic houses … poised upon slender supports above the marsh, like cranes or bitterns watching for scaly prey.’
The ‘cinnamon-colored’ inhabitants were ‘strange, wild, picturesque,’ he wrote, noting that they often sent money home to ‘aid friends in emigrating.’ An illustrator named J.O. Davidson who traveled with Hearn sketched mysterious houses and swarthy men. His drawings were later made into engravings for the article and are now the only images of St. Malo that exist.”

✨️ After months of planning, the Filipino Book and Study Club is now up and running! 🇵🇭📚
Starting in July, we will be discussing 2 books, Barangay by William Henry Scott and History of the Bisayans Volume 1, the English translation of Francisco Alcina's works in 1668 by Kobak.
I will also be hosting my first class in awhile! We will be discussing various deities from the Philippines, the babaylan, and traditional tattooing. It will be held on Friday, July 19. Time will be announced in the coming weeks once we get closer.
Scanned pdfs chapters of Barangay and History of the Bisayans will be available on my Patreon later this week to those in the Mayari Tier on my Patreon. I will also be posting a study guide for you all based on July's chapter readings. These study guides and scanned pdfs of books will be available to both the Apo Laki and Mayari Tiers.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask! And if you know someone who would be interested in joining the Filipino Book & Study Club, share this post to them or tag them.
I look forward to having the first class of this year we you all!
For those not in the know, this is one of the Amanita mushrooms referred to as a Destroying Angel. Never, ever, ever, ever forage with an app. Especially for mushrooms.
It legitimately amazes me how the “We can't allow the Holocaust to happen again” crowd can look at something like this and still claim that the Israeli government isn’t committing any war crimes.
It’s so sad that in order to get people to care about Palestine, we completely ignore the thousands of innocent men who have been killed in this genocide. We have to say “children”, or “women and children”, with slightly lower numbers, because the full death count is somehow seen as less tragic when we include men.
My heart aches for the innocent men of Palestine who have been slaughtered. You mattered just as much as anyone else. And for the men who are doing everything in their power to help their fellow Palestinians, we love and respect you. Thank you for all that you do.
