A Snapshot of the Wedderburn Region

Wedderburn is a suburb in Campbelltown and is the only one that is situated on the east of the beautiful Georges River. Even though it is classified as a suburb, it actually feels more like a country town, largely due to heavy bush and the presence of the steep gorge. Additionally, the main link to Campbelltown is subject to flooding during periods of heavy rain, adding to its isolation and country feel.

History of Orchards and Farms

With the residents mainly living on orchards and farms, the area was described by one journalist in 1923 as being “one of the best fruit-producing centres of the State". Bushfires have always been a threat to Wedderburn and in 1939 a particularly aggressive wildfire destroyed around 80 per cent of the local fruit crop. That was when the Wedderburn fire brigade was born. The population of Wedderburn today is only about 585, but even this is quite a significant increase compared to the 100 residents who lived there in the 1950s.

The Beautiful Dharawal National Park

Wedderburn is rich in flora and fauna and is home to a large colony of healthy koalas. Access to the Dharawal National Park can be made from Wedderburn, which has a range of walking trails, bike tracks, rockpools and waterfalls. Places like the Minerva Pool is a great spot for a picnic. The 2.4 kilometre return moderate walk includes some steps, obstacles and short steep hills and takes you through bushland, past a lookout and finally to a stunning waterhole. This particular pool is a sacred women’s site for the Aboriginal Dharawal People. As such, only women and children may bathe there.

About Wedderburn Christian Campsite

Wedderburn is a bit further away from Sydney (about an hour and a half drive), but that isn’t the end of the world if the camp has everything that you need. There is a bed for everyone, a large dining room and plenty of space for activities. There is a beach volleyball court, basketball half court and a soccer field. Rumour has it that the kitchen produces great food and plenty of it. You also have the option of hiring out the kitchen facilities if you want to organise your own meals during your stay.
