A really underrated Katniss moment in the books is the end of the first book when she thinks about how unfair Peeta is being— and how she wants to tell him she already misses him but that wouldn’t be fair on her part.
Given his home life, it really doesn’t seem like Peeta is shown much grace—and yet here’s this girl, trying her best to be fair to him, even when she feels he isn’t being fair to her.

Ya know what Katniss never says? That all the stuff she has to do with Peeta for the SCL act (star crossed lovers has an acronym now. Pass it on) is icky. She hates to perform, she’s terrified she won’t do a good enough job etc etc. But never once, not even a little bit, does she complain that she doesn’t want to kiss him, hug him, hold his hand. Imagine if you had to make out with someone you just met, and a lot, for weeks. I’d be HELLA uncomfortable even if he was nice about it. But katniss is never bothered by Peeta’s touch. Never. I just think that’s interesting

There’s something so precious about Katniss—with all her trust issues—never even considering that Haymitch might lie to her.
And then there’s Peeta who is just as much of a problem child as Katniss, basically calling Haymitch a liar on national television.

Never forget the moment Peeta blustered onto the whipping block and tried to defend Katniss too and Haymitch just went “nope! You absolute fucking nutter I cannot have another child put themselves in harms way omfg you guys crave the bullets don't you.” and just yanked him back behind him

hey Snow … this should have been your big lightbulb that Katniss isn’t faking her love for Peeta … if it was purely for sponsors, if she really was prioritizing getting home to her family above all else, if she really was as unfeeling as Snow wants to believe she is … her easy victory is RIGHT HERE … and it’s in such a desperate situation, even if you want to say she couldn’t kill Peeta for shame of going back home, no one would have blamed her for shooting Cato and hoping he wouldn’t take Peeta down with him … she had her out!!! two boys with one arrow!!! she doesn’t shoot because she cannot and will not leave this arena without Peeta Mellark

every time someone headcanons annie as being afraid of water after her games i wanna shake em and say you fools the water saved her, the water is the only thing that made sense, she’s always known that water has the power to take lives, that’s it’s something that should be always treated with a little bit of fear so why would that change????
she was so out of her mind by the time the flood hit she probably wasn’t even aware of it other than the fact that she was doing something she’s always been good at. she was swimming.
it’s the everything else that happened in her games that traumatized her. not the water. never the water.

Abt victors being complex - that's why my personal unpopular headcanon is that most of them didn't have positive feelings about Katniss or Peeta. Because let's be real for a moment, even if you're the nicest person in the world or the most broken and beaten down by the Capitol and the Games: you would think "why wasn't I enough? Why didnt people care enough about me to riot? Why do I have to go through this hell again? Why did they get to break the rules?" And tbh, KP's naivety as victors, from that perspective, would be absolutely grating, they never really seem to Get It until its too late and everyone else has to pay for their mistakes.
yes!!! this!!!! you get it!!!!!
katniss and peeta never had to go through the normal Victor Experience with the pain of mentoring or victor prostitution or the companionship within the victors. they just don’t Get It, like you said. and that’s not their fault!! the capitol shows these people hanging off capitol citizens arms, oohing and awing at everything in their path every year, fully convincing everyone that the victors are happy. that they want to be here, away from their home and families hanging off of strange men and women’s arms. they depict the perfect victors, who smile and wave and sign autographs. victors like chaff and haymitch get about five seconds of screen time before being pushed aside because they’re not interesting, they’re not the focus, they’re not complying with the image we are depicting. they don’t conform with the images we are showing to our citizens.
i truly believe that there was no way all of the victors liked katniss and peeta. actually, i don’t think many of the victors liked katniss and peeta. as in, there was probably like two that genuinely liked them. and also, from their perspective, these are the reason they’re going back into the arena!! none of the victors wanted to do that!!!
we really need more complex victors representation in this fandom…

Katniss scratched Haymitch's face and damaged his eye when she found out what happened to Peeta at the end of CF and somehow there are people still thinking she settled for that boy. Hmm.

girlhood is crying in bed at 3am bc I remembered that annie cresta and finnick odair didn't get to spend the rest of their lives together, that annie lived to see the other side of the war, and raise a child in a world without the person in the world who cared for, loved her, and understood more than anyone else. that even their wedding was used for propaganda, that finnick's trauma was used to distract the captiol, that even on d13 they still didn't fully have a life without exploitation. that mags volunteered to save annie from the games and died, but by the end annie wouldn't have mags or finnick. that their child would only ever know his father through stories. that there wasn't even a body that could be brought back. that annie, who had grown to know a world where finnick would be there for her, suddenly had a child to raise while still dealing with the trauma and mental affects of her traumatic life.
I'm literally bawling, my shaylas, my pookies, my loves, suzanne why did you do this to me

love love love the way Haymitch's voice is in Katniss's head the moment she even steps two feet away from him.
In the arena- "oh he hasn't sent me water- there's water nearby" "Oh a kiss equals food, got it." "oh he's from district twelve- theres trees around, this silver fucking tube has gotta mean smth- who cares that theres eight people on my team rn- Haymitch is the one who sent this to me not all the other sponsors, he knew id figure it out."
Or just in general: "Oh he looked at me and smiled, lets not let him get me alone or he'll kill me because I disobeyed him" "oops ok so he's having withdrawls lemme buy some liquor"
just. just just.
She even acknowledges that, to Peeta or like anyone else, the signals would be meaningless. She doesn't dwell on it- because ew feelings for Haymitch no thanks- but she acknowledges it
And also just- them?!?!?!?!?!
The way he's the first person she runs to when she's free from the arena
The way Sweetheart devolves from something she hates to something that brings her comfort and a feeling of warmth- even when someone else like Peeta or even Finnick says it because to her the nickname belongs to her and Haymitch
And the way- agh ok people don't understand but the way she knows he's upset when she removed the earpiece and he sends her to bed because he can't stand to look at her because of the stunt she and Peeta pulled with their painting and Seneca Crane drawing thing(ugh it was tooooo funny I was losing my shit- "go to bed, i cant stand to look at you" idk why or how to explain it but thats such a dad move and i cackled so hard)
The way she knows what he's thinking and he knows what she is
The way, even when they're fighting, they have to, are drawn to each other for comfort and solidarity
The way thinking of him gives her sanity and strength
(The way he threatens to implant a chip into her head so that she hears him constantly and will never again remove his earpiece- both ironic because even without the earpiece Katniss will always have his voice in her head- and absolutely so fucking cute because the act of disobeying orders didn't just annoy Haymitch- it probably fucking terrified him. His girl is out there alone and without him, without his help and guidance and he can just watch, petrified as she fights and he can't say anything)
anyway I'm going insane about them :)

Let me start this post out by saying, I am 1000%%% anti Finnick dying, and in my mind, he and Annie live on the beach in District 4 where they raise their babies and live happily ever after forever.
However, a lot of people say that Finnick’s death had no effect on the plot whatsoever and was only a tool to add more tragedy to the storyline, and I kind of disagree… Soooo hear me out, his death actually did affect the plot and was important to the storyline in a way I’ve seen no one talk about.
The victor vote at the end.
Obviously, the way the vote panned out was very important in Katniss gaining Coin’s trust, which opened up the door for her to kill her at the end. And this vote was 4-3.
If Finnick had lived, and, as Annie suggested during the scene, voted against the symbolic Hunger Games, there would’ve been a tie vote. And I’m sure Suzanne Collins could’ve figured out a way around this - like changing it to where someone like Beetee swapped his vote or allowing another victor to live earlier at the end of CF (like some sort of Career) so that there was nine victors voting or whatever else she might’ve done. But she didn’t (unfortunately). She chose Finnick as her way around this. And his death changed the trajectory of this scene BIG TIME.
With the seven victors left, a majority voted in favor of Coin, Coin “got” her symbolic Hunger Games and trusted Katniss, and because of this, Katniss was able to kill Coin and end the Games entirely.
So, even though I hate Finnick’s death, it did have an effect on the plot later on. And I’m still just as sad as you are.

In the first book, Peeta is stung by tracker jackers, has the presense of mind to go back and find Katniss, shoos her away when Cato (who has also been stung) arrives, and gets severely injured but somehow not killed. (I think that's because both of them were hallucinating/willing to get out of there before their symptoms get worse).
He then proceeds to walk far enough for Katniss to have to track him for a while, find a good hiding spot close to a water source and camouphlage himself so well that even Katniss, a skilled hunter, couldn't find him. He did all that with a severely injured leg and three tracker jacker stings. He pushed the collapsing in hallucinations part for a long time. And then he stayed there for a week, infected, with no food, and didn't die.
In Catching Fire, Peeta gets electrocuted by the force field early on, and Finnick resuscitates him. He's young and healthy, and he wakes up, but electrocution alone would have left him painfully sore for a long time afterwards. All of his muscles would have contracted extremely hard and possibly spasmed when he was hit by the current, not to mention he was thrown forcefully back unconscious. I read a post a long time ago that described it as "feeling like he had the most brutal workout in his life". And then CPR is having someone literally pound on your sternum with enough force to get your heart to pump, multiple times. It hurts A LOT to be at the recieving end of it. And the muscle soreness takes days to go away.
Peeta literally spent the following days continually hiking, in the heat, with no water (until they figured it out), after all of that. He barely got any chance to recover, and a couple days later he was also taking turns with Finnick carrying Beetee on his back. Not to mention everything else that the others also went through. Oh, yeah, and he's got an amputated leg.
Talk about a strong constitution.

something I'm kinda sad they omitted from the catching fire movie:
when finnick and katniss get the salve after the fog and cover their faces in it and prank wake up peeta by scaring him
ik its doesnt fit the 'theme' of the movie and yknow fighting for survival but it's so silly and goofy and truly just a nice little moment between them right after mags and the district 6 woman's death to let off some steam
like in 24hrs finnick goes from katniss' kill list, to unwanted ally, to lets be silly and prank peeta. like yes this is what a 17yo and a 24yo would do in a moment of whimsy just because why not

I hate the hunger games movies (not the prequel ones, haven't watched, seem cool though)
the reason the story works is because you're experiencing it all THROUGH THE EYES of katniss
barely anything happens in the first book
SO little happens in the first book, but it thrives through her narration, the fact that we're seeing everything happen through the eyes of this teenager and the way she sees herself and the world around her
she thinks Peeta isn't trustworthy, she think's she's subpar in skills and nothing compared to the other contestants, she thinks her district hates her
you lose EVERYTHING that makes the story work when you force it to leave the formatting of a first person book which it was specifically BUILT AROUND and instead put it into a movie with third person camera objectivity and detachment from the protagonist
that first book is entertaining because despite barely anything actually happening, Katniss is constantly thinking and reflecting and that is INTERESTING
without katniss' inner monologues you have two hours of just girl in trees sometimes getting chased and barely speaking
and it SUCKS

12 for Peeta & 8 for Gale (bc we love to hate him)
12. What’s a headcanon you have for this character?
I think I’ve shared a few about his food preferences and canon pointing to him being a perfectionist so I’ll share something that’s kind of an opposition to fanon. I know people love the idea of Peeta having seen Katniss and that’s what caused him to get second place in wrestling. But I prefer that he genuinely tried his best and came in second place. It fits better with the constant theme of his background involving him never being the first choice for anything, and the hints of him being an intense perfectionist. It also makes the potential family dynamics so much more interesting. But I’m not above making Peeta’s day worse by having him notice after he lost that day that Katniss was in the stands. And this later on makes Katniss praising him so much sweeter, she’s genuinely praising him for something he tried his best in even if he wasn’t first. Something he may have even been embarrassed about her noticing.
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
I’m going to bring Katniss into this because it annoys me more on her behalf: acts like she and Gale are exactly the same except for the war decisions. Obviously I have a lot of thoughts about who Katniss’s primary mirror is in the series (and I would add Snow and Haymitch after Peeta based on the story beats of the prequels), but even without the shipper goggles on it’s like 95% of the reason people think Katniss isn’t awkwardly kind and instead think she's this super harsh pragmatist. And it takes away a lot from both their characterizations. It’s takes away from how both their childhoods shaped them. How Gale’s more stable parental relationship may have made it easier for him to see the world in black and white. How Katniss’s mom made her so much more suspicious. How Gale’s one of the most idealistic characters in the series. How he’s also one of the most honest. How the only scenes of him and Katniss together before the games shows that outside of anger at the Capitol and surviving they’re already going on different paths because of their temperaments. How Katniss has an artsy romanticism in her that Gale doesn’t. How she’s more passive in a way and really wants to enjoy her little peaceful life. How even without the bombs and the games it makes sense that Katniss is in 12 and Gale goes somewhere else. Their first conversation is disagreeing about that. It just adds to the tragedy of how they seem like those friends you meet in high school that you spend time with everyday but your stories are meant to be distanced eventually.
ask me about a character!
