Here is my project from last term. 'Cinema in Silhouette Form'. We were the 'night time studio' where we studied the night condition and designed for it. Portland has an abundant amount of art scattered through the city; art is taken seriously here in Portland. There is a law that 1% of a building/project budget must be dedicated to art of some form for the project or around it. Despite this, in just our small cross-section alone in Portland, only a handful are specifically lit at night. When compared to Billboards, that is roughly every 8 (obnoxiously lit) billboards for 1 specifically lit artwork in our cross section alone.
This project is a theater for shadow dancers and their performances on a small scale at night time. Taking advantage of the darkness of the night time condition, and introducing light or allowing certain light to enter the space as needed to create a progression into the spaces and to the performance. This project utilizes a site right off of Broadway, as a nod to the performing arts that have existed on this road, as well as a billboard that will not only light itself, but become a source of light for the performances of this space.
There are 3 spaces that play with light to bring the performer and the audience gradually from a 3 dimensional world to the 2 dimensional performance. The quality of light and shadow, as well as what light or shadow do in each space has significant meaning to each space and the transition to follow into and out of the performances.
