Fixperts - Hex-a-grip for Elisabeth from Louis Eager on Vimeo.
Fixperts is a learning platform that challenges designers to use their imagination and skills to create solutions to everyday problems for a real person. This project involved prototyping, collaboration and film making.
Elizabeth has arthritis in her hands which makes it hard to open bottles and jam jars. After working closely with her, our fixperts team have designed the Hex-a-Grip, made from silicone; a tool to help her with her difficulty.
Fixpartner: Elizabeth Fixperts: Madison Bates, Emma Appleton, Mona Jia, Louis Eager

A collaborative project with Lucas Wheeler and Madison Bates. With the limitation of materials: 18mm birch plywood seat, two metres of 19mm steel tube and a restricted amount of solid ash, the brief was to design and make two stools for mass manufacture. Ash Stool has biscuit and domino joints to form a solid structure and has been finished with beeswax. Tubular Stool has multiple components, which are assembled by the user with an allen key. It has 3D printed nylon feet for stability and durability.

Made from rolled sheet steel, Gloperf is a perforated candle shade with increasingly more holes lower down to make the candle light brighter as it burns. The beeswax candle glows and burns slowly. A slit down one side allows for lighting and relighting. To be sold with extra long safety matches. With other candle products, the only thing that changes over burning time is the height of the wax, I wanted the whole user experience to transition as the candle burns, creating changes in mood as the day goes on. There are more perforations lower down the shade because the idea is that the user would light the candle in the morning and as the sun goes down in the evening and there is less natural light; the candle will need to be brighter.

This is a one-to-one scale model replica of an existing product with a focus on high quality making and finishing. The top face is vacuum formed plastic with resin buttons made using a silicone mould. Heat has been applied to bend the acrylic handle. And the entire model has been painted with a spray gun.
