When SAP reached out to us about creating a video to help launch their New Ventures and Technologies initiative – well, to be honest, we knew they were big company, but we didn't really understand just how much everybody interacts with their products on a daily basis. We had an absolutely killer time working with SAP on this video and getting to know more about where they've come from, and where they're going. And, we had the delight of working with some new friends for the first time, who helped us finish this whole project in a month! Credits: Creative Direction: Jorge R. Canedo E. With the launch of a new visual language, typeface and robust set of tools, IBM has taken the ambitious step of not only refreshing their brand but reinventing their entire approach to design. Its foundation is a philosophy that informs all of their decisions - a way of thinking about design, and the responsibility it holds. A team of our own self-identified design nerds partnered with the IBM Design team to develop this series of animations that live within the Design Language repository. Written, designed and animated with rigorous adherence to their system, each short illustrates and embodies the IBM Design Language, functioning as a bridge between principle and practice. The Unwavering Pursuit of Progress --- In partnership with GPJ and IBM, I was part of the creative team at The Mill+ to create “Moonshot: The Unwavering Pursuit of Progress”, a short film commemorating the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. The film highlights IBM’s integral involvement in making the mission a reality and their legacy of technological innovation. I was the lead designer and motion designer, tasked with conceptualizing the visual language to thread together the data visualisation moments and archival NASA footage and diagrams, under director William Arnold. --- CREDITS Production Mill+ Director William Arnold Executive Creative Director Rama Allen Executive Producer Desi Gonzalez Senior Producers Mandy Agderian, Irka Seng Associate Producer Min-Wei Lee Developer Fabio Piparo Design & Animation Joyce N. “Rutger Bregman on Taxes” is personal project made in collaboration with Cypher. The quote is an excerpt from Dutch journalist and historian Rutger Bregman’s conference given at the 2019 World Economic Forum in Davos, where he talks about wealth inequality, philanthropy and taxes. Rutger is also the author of “Utopia for Realists“. A book where he explores three core concepts; a universal basic income, a 15-hour workweek and open borders across the globe.

This is, literally, the world’s smallest movie. It’s made of atoms — one of the smallest particles of any element in the universe. Just how small is an atom? Well, to see one, you need to magnify it 100 million times. In other words, there are about five million atoms in the period at the end of this sentence. Each frame was made by moving hundreds of atoms to their exact placements by the scientists at IBM Research — Almaden. The frames were combined into an animation, now the Guinness World Records ™ record holder for World’s Smallest Stop-Motion Film.

“Press Enter” is an abstract story where we dive in a virtual world. This film explores the notion of digital technology through a network that invades urban space, but also raises the question of artificial intelligence and its impact on reality. Blooms are 3-D printed sculptures designed to animate when spun under a strobe light. Unlike a 3D zoetrope, which animates a sequence of small changes to objects, a bloom animates as a single self-contained sculpture. The bloom’s animation effect is achieved by progressive rotations of the golden ratio, phi (ϕ), the same ratio that nature employs to generate the spiral patterns we see in pinecones and sunflowers. The rotational speed and strobe rate of the bloom are synchronized so that one flash occurs every time the bloom turns 137.5º (the angular version of phi).* Each bloom’s particular form and behavior is determined by a unique parametric seed I call a phi-nome (/fī nōm/). -John Edmark John Edmark is an artist, designer, and inventor. He teaches at Stanford University. 1978.Color.Sound Running Time: 3:40 Jarnow adapts an architectual grid 'catalogue' of cubic rotations in order to explore a direct relationship between animation procedure and logical numerical operations. The film is as much about the making of animation as it is a paper 'model' of a computer. The cube sheet, upon which the film is based, is so constructed that a horizontal cubic rotation and a diagonal pan yeilds a diagonal rotation. Combinations of these primary moves result in more complex rotations throughout this awe-inspiring film.
