I’m not articulate enough to put into words how important Rick is to me and that’s why this blog is mostly a mixture of silent reblogs and superficial praise, but I thought that on his birthday I should make a little effort.
Recognition eluded him most of his life and he only really got it in his later years and, sadly, after his death, which is something that I could never understand — the Floyd would have never been what they are if it werent for Rick’s magical touch and I don’t get why someone so integral to the band was so blatantly ignored for many years (his return wasn’t easy either, but that’s another story). On a more personal level, I have always found Rick rather relatable because I see a lot of myself in him and I can get an idea of how isolated he felt due to his shy and reserved personality.
I’ll stop now because I don’t know what else to say except that he’s very dear to me, always has been and always will be, and I really cherish the music he has left us as his immortal legacy.
Happy birthday, Richard 🩷

“It was Syd and Rick [the ones who stood out musically]. Rick was doing a lot of stuff; it was sometimes quite difficult to sort out what was Rick and what was Syd. They really worked very well together.” — Peter Jenner, Pink Floyd’s first manager.

“When Rick was working with Syd I think he found him very intriguing. He was such an extraordinary character and he was able to give voice to his fantasies, his lyrics were extraordinary, the way that he behaved on stage was extraordinary. It was challenging but it was also very exciting, and I think there was an enormous amount of respect there.” — Juliette Wright, Rick’s first wife.

We slipped into a pub for one pint (very nervously as we were so young) and then walked along the promenade. We saw a very dirty and dusty Ford Transit parked up outside a club. It was covered in graffiti amongst which were references to Pink Floyd so we looked in the cab and, bugger me, Rick Wright was sitting behind the wheel in his stage gear. We tapped on the window and said we’d been to the show. We all got his autograph and asked where Syd was. He pointed into the club (no way we could blag our way in there!). We chatted for a couple of minutes and went for our bus. And that was it really. I was so shocked when, a few weeks/months later, it was announced that Syd was out of the band.

Having managed to gain access by helping carry the band's equipment into the venue, Altman, armed with a tape recorder, grabbed a few words with Pink Floyd's Rick Wright before being shown into Hendrix's dressing room. "It was the only time that I bunked off school in my life," recalled Altman. "He showed us some films he'd made. I wonder what happened to those movies? Half the time I don't think he knew what a bunch of schoolkids were rambling on about, but he was a really gentle, lovely guy."
John Altman’s interview from 2005

If you wanna call someone a kind of genius. In terms of pop music, there are not many around, possibly put Syd there, but then I'm a bit biased.
