There came moments of blinding calm in his frantic, buzzing half-brain, a blanket tucked over the thoughts and sending them off to sleep wrapped in a numbing cotton cocoon: it was only in these moments, which passed through the zipper crack in his head like water leaking through fingers, that he was able to remember. He never held onto the memories but there was always the glowing feeling having remembered a memory after, one of his very favorite feelings. It was pride and accomplishment.

His mood today was dark as the sky overhead, though, as dark as the memory he remembered without remembering.

"There was an eclipse. The moon was right in front of the sun and for a few hours there was nothing. That’s when it happened.”

Somehow somewhere down the line, discombobulated and disconnected and dissonant over the distance to his destination, Glitch had followed his train of thought and jumped off the tracks, chasing it with a glassy-eyed stare and an even pace down, down, down the chasm of the void of the thoughtless abyss, a process longer than even this sentence. Long legs picked their way gingerly over familiar roots and through familiar hedges, but the physical was a million million miles away from where Glitch was, his half-brain wholly absorbed in chasing down the caboose of a train of thought whose engine he had lost three miles back.

Well. With that helpful insight completed and promptly disregarded, the headcase came to a full stop in the middle of the woods only to find--

“Oh.”

--that he had lost him in a little more than just thought.

“Oh, Oz. Not again!”
