GoL takes place in 1994. We are also first introduced to smol Akira.

We know Sings age at that time from GoL

Akira is a middle-schooler and she has been one for some time so if I had to guess I would put her age in GoL around 13-14 years old. ( So the age difference between her and Sing would be 9-10 years )

Also I really love Eiji for trying to help her out , these family problems have been hard on her at this stage of her life.

Five years later Sing ( or Sin )  and Akira get married and the year is 1999.

I haven't read or watched banana fish bc my heart already can't handle it, but there's sth I'm curious about - in garden of light, does Eiji know Ash is dead? like, does he ever find out what happened to Ash?

Oh he knows (I never want to know his reaction when he first heard) and I’m pretty sure he’ll never fully be over it. He says this to Sing and Akira (Ibe’s niece) near the end of GoL and it makes me emotional every time I read it:

The way Eiji and Sing talk to Ash’s belongings and photos, as if he’s sitting right there in the room, his spirit will never die to them, but you can still see the grief in both of them. I ran out of space to post all the pictures, but you can read GoL here.

It’s not only GoL, but also the photo book that Eiji published called New York Sense where the whole thing is basically another love letter to Ash.

It took 6 years for him to dig up Ash’s pictures again, and then they’re overflowing in his photo book and gallery. We don’t know for certain, but I doubt Eiji ever married, and Ash will remain his first and only love.

I hope you don't mind if I spill some thoughts- BUT AFTER READING GARDEN OF LIGHT, I started asking- what if Ash was still alive and what if he'd been able to meet Akira?

Like it saddens me because I feel as if they would've gotten along really great. I could imagine those two having funny and innocent quarrels and butting heads all the time.

And what if those two bonded because of how similar their names are in meaning?

This breaks my heart because Akira was so curious to know about Ash, and that smile when she saw his picture...

I'm sorry I don't send a lot of asks so I'm a little awkward, but please tell me your thoughts if you have any ?!

For starters, don't apologize. I love talking to people about Banana Fish, it fuels me lol I'm always open to messages and asks ( ´ ▽ ` ) I'm awkward too so don't let that stop you ^^

Second, I agree 100% I know for a fact that Ash would absolutely love Akira. I can see Akira teaming up with Ash to do nice things for Eiji. Also reversed, Akira teaming up with Eiji to mess with Ash.

No matter how many pranks they pull on each other, and jokes they make of one another, they're as thick as thieves. Ash will always be protective of her... especially since it's canon that Sing and Akira marry. I can just imagine Ash finding out they were interested in each other

I loved how curious Akira was about Ash and how Sing described Ash to her. I was sobbing at showing of "Dawn" and Eiji’s realization that he needed to move on. Garden of Light is just fucking great (ﾉД`)

i love Ibe but why is his immediate response when someone is sad just to send them to America. Like oh your depressed because you have an emotional block from pole vaulting? lets go to the dangerous streets of new york city! I’m sure that'll make you feel better! And then after Eiji got shot and lost the love of his life, Ibe just goes to his niece and is like “oh your depressed because your father won’t except your gender identity? Off to America you go!”. it’s not that it doesn’t work but there’s gotta be other ways.

Garden of Light is so weird like imagine you go to visit your uncles friend Eiji’s house because your dad won’t accept your gender Identity but you get kidnapped by this tall dude who is your uncles friend’s friend. And then your uncle’s friend’s best friend’s father figure’s son comes over and he’s all like “yo, remember ash? got any pictures?” and Eiji’s all like “what? Pfft no way” and you’re like “hey let’s go to the library” but that really triggered your uncles friend. So you talk to the tall guy and your like “who the fuck is ash” and then he’s all like “oh yeah that’s somebody Eiji loves but they dead now” so your like “oh ok she seems cute” and he’s like “no you dumb bitch Eiji is gay” and then everyone is crying, a computer is verbally harassed, and you’re like “damn I just wanted to go to the library”

A RARE FANART I have come across- featuring all female characters of Banana Fish (that have appeared in manga/anime version) From Left to Right 1) Jennifer (appeared in both anime and manga version) 2) Nadia Wong (both anime and manga- although former provides pretty abridged version) 3) Jessica Randy (the only prominent female character that one finds in both anime and manga versions) 4) Uemura Eiko (appeared in side story of manga "Fly boy in the Sky" -Shunichi's girlfriend back home in Japan) 5) Eiji's sister (unnamed- appears in "Fly boy in the sky") 6) Akira Ibe (appears in epilogue of vol 19 manga "Garden of Light")

WELL, I THINK OF THIS OFTEN.....and it makes sense, why these two have to have everything so poetic?

If you think about it, it might have been something like love at first sight for Ash.

Do you remember when Eiji asks for Ash's gun and he just hands it over to him? I mean he is a mafia leader and should have known that he CAN'T just trust someone like that?!

What if Eiji was another gang's member sent to kill Ash? What if he would have pulled the trigger and killed him? What then? (Ash's people would have killed Eiji too but the damage would've been done already.)

I know Ash would have already found out about these two 'photographers' that were coming to his place, but information can be faked too. (Remember that one time when Shorter had asked his gang member to find out about Yut Lung and the guy faked it? What I mean to say is that people can always be bribed.)

And even if his spies were trustable sources, that was too much trust for a stranger.

I always feel like Ash's gun is a metaphor for his heart or if you're particularly dirty minded it could be something else too, but let's stick with heart.

Everyone in the mafia world knows not to ask for each other's guns; to carry their own. His gun could only be stolen. There is supposed to be no consent when anyone asks for his gun. He has to keep it safe because if it gets stolen, it will become his weakness.

So when Eiji politely and sheepishly asks for his gun, his brain just short-circuits. He doesn't know how to react to it.

From somewhere deep inside, a hidden voice, tells he could trust this guy. Blanca had told him to follow his gut. But he had also precisely said that don't give your gun to anyone.

But his body has already taken control and he finds himself handing his gun to Eiji.

Eiji looks delighted to hold that weapon. That weapon that has mercilessly killed people. But Eiji completely neglects that part and treats it with a caution and just being normal about it.

How...? Ash doesn't seem to understand.

And maybe that's why, just so he could divert his mind elsewhere, he calls Eiji childish.

But in reality... He doesn't even know.

But if life gave them a chance, he would love to know.
