some things about sunrise on the reaping/the hunger games universe i'm thinking about today

haymitch was close friends with katniss's father when they were teenagers... how many times did haymitch see her at the hob or around town and do a double take?

burdock everdeen is lenore dove baird's distant cousin, meaning katniss is connected to lucy gray's bloodline... literally snow's worst nightmare come back to haunt him, down to genetics

reaping day is on the fourth of july. idk what else to say about this one i think we're all on the same page about this

katniss wanting wiress, beetee, and mags as allies despite over half of the victor tributes wanting to pair up with her... the three victors who helped haymitch win his games

haymitch, the victor of a games with twice as many tributes, bringing two victors home as a mentor in the 74th games

despite having the most tributes and therefore the most deadly, with the least odds of survival per tribute, the 50th hunger games had the most alliances out of any other games

beetee's son being a tribute in the quell- i know we're all there already and it's been talked about endlessly but i'd like us to recall in catching fire when katniss tells the reader that the children of victors are reaped at a disproportionate amount... ampert was not the first nor was he the last. how many tributes were reaped to punish previous victors? "you tried to take away control from the capitol... look what we can take from you"

the circumstances of ampert's death: mutts that were engineered just for him, just for beetee, designed to literally strip him of anything that made him recognizable while they killed him. beetee and his family didn't even have a body to bury, just a pile of bones

we also know that at the end of sotr, beetee's wife is pregnant, but when beetee comes to district 13 in mockingjay his is alone. was his family killed in the uprising, or was yet another one of his children sent to the games as punishment for beetee's actions before and during the 2nd quarter quell?

effie was the last person haymitch saw before the games began. she came into his launch room before he went into the tube... she was the last face he saw, the last person he touched, before the games changed him forever. she was the last person to know the "old" haymitch

maysilee didn't even like the mockingjay pin- it wasn't a beloved token that had a deep meaning to generations before katniss. it meant nothing until katniss made it mean something- until madge, maysilee's niece, made it mean something

gale mocking madge for wearing an especially nice dress and trying to present herself well on reaping day, and her defending herself by saying "i want to look nice if they send me to the capital" - maysilee being scorned by haymitch for her nice clothes and her necklaces until he realizes it's her own way of rebelling against the capitol... "i am going to make you see me as human too if it kills me" (they all try to dress their best for reaping day but gale & haymitch were bothered by madge & maysilee’s clothes as a status symbol)

haymitch mentions that hattie used to tell him "fire is catching", which later became one of the slogans of the rebellion via katniss's propos with plutarch

haymitch's token being a flint striker, and katniss being the girl on fire. katniss inciting the rebellion by succeeding at the exact task at which haymitch failed- destroying the force field. she wasn’t special, she was just in the right place at the right time and got enough support

we've always seen the quarter quell as a way of snow getting back at katniss for her rebellion in the 74th games, but after sotr we know she is hardly the first victor to rebel against the capitol. beetee was already a rebel in his own right, wiress and mags were instrumental in haymitch's victory in the 50th games, we can infer from johanna's characterization as loud and outspoken and certainly less than palatable to the capital's propoganda that she may have had a less than ideal (to the capitol) history... how many victor tributes were reaped on purpose? how many of them won their games through an act of defiance that was covered up?

similary, we know plutarch's plan with katniss was similar to his plan with haymitch... but surely they weren't the only two. how many other tributes, district 12 or otherwise, did plutarch and co. try to use as weapons, simply by being victims of circumstance? how many families of rebellious tributes, whether they were victors or not, were punished, because they went along with plutarch's plan thinking they had nothing left to lose seeing as they were probably going to die anyway? so much of haymitch's games was covered up and rewritten to hide his defiance of the capitol,,, how many other games were significantly or almost entirely fabricated by the capitol because of "unruly" tributes? was any of it real?

anyway i may be reaching with some of these but suzanne collins just gave us so much to think about with sotr!!! i've seen some dissent about how some of sotr disrupts the canon of thg but i think that's entirely the point... none of what katniss knew about haymitch's games was real to begin with, it's just what was fed to her by the capitol.

a thing that i particularly love about the hunger games prequels is how it shows that people have been fighting against the games since their inception

when i was younger and read the original trilogy for the first time i was so bothered how it was 74 years of games, i remember thinking how could it have gone on so long without anyone doing anything

these prequels highlight that people have been fighting from the get-go: lucy gray's defiance, reaper ripping down panem's flags to cover the fallen tributes, haymitch's games and how many others shared his ideologies - the capitol just drowns them out, they rewrite their stories so their efforts are forgotten

liberation takes time and it's built upon the actions of those in the past

snow really convinced himself lucy gray didn't love him (after she wrote a whole song about him and tried to run away with him) and then forty years later told sixteen year old haymitch abernathy that dying in the arena would be dodging a bullet compared to loving a covey girl. top 10 situationships gone horribly wrong

the way haymitch must have seen it as all his ghosts coming back to haunt him at once when katniss walked onto the train with the face of burdock and asterid, the pin of maysilee, the voice of lenore dove, and a background so devastatingly similar to his own. of course sweetheart slipped out. and of course he did everything he could to keep her alive

Happy (belated) 5th TTS Finaleversary!! I posted this on time on my Patreon, but here is the public post finally! As you all know March 1 is the series finale, and because it's been 5 years I really wanted to make something special this year <333

Because the sundrop and moonstone longed to find each other and be together in space again, this was the message I wanted to interpret visually. Plus I was inspired by none other Jayvik's final scene from Arcane, and not only was it visually stunning, but also at least to me, I felt that the scene gave off BIG Cassunzel in TTS finale energy, and it snowballed into this idea I had been brewing for a long time. So happy and proud of how this turned out, and I also want to thank everyone who joined me on stream for this piece!

selena said she knew david for 3 years back in 2008 i believe? and how he was her best friend from the cast. i didn’t believe harper and alex were close before she said that and that just sealed it for me. i just continued thinking alex and justin were more best friends than alex and harper were

they would’ve had a lot more chemistry reads to go through as the best friend leads then harper’s actress and selena had since harper was only a guest star. even for the twins, they just changed the dynamic but they were still the leads so more steps for them to have even gotten those roles since they were the face of the show. esp when david was the lead.

there’s so many pics when the show was airing of david and sel hanging out alone, even before all the dating speculations popped up. or constantly with each other’s family and traveling together. he knew her other best friends too. i remember him taking her whole family to her concert then brought her to meet his family. i’m sorry that transferred over enough as a kid, that i believe justin and alex were close no matter what the script made them say. they had chemistry. and clearly bonded behind the scenes. there was nothing for harper and alex except the plots saying they were best friends. this is exactly why some productions send out their casts to bond otherwise it just doesn’t show on screen.

even harper’s actress said she was barely on set for s1 and missed out on so much of the bonding and promo tours so what were we supposed to believe?

i couldn’t believe that was the same justin who spent $400 of his own money to get alex back from a dollhouse. if it was later in the season, it would’ve been left to harper to fix things or justin just laughed at her from the sides. i really wondered who hated him that much to ruin his character like that. it was appalling how he went about things when alex was stuck in the mirror, s1-2 justin would’ve freaked out over worrying so much over alex then be the first person to figure out a plan to get her back. it really

made me think about how much disney interfered with things because next thing you knew, the main writer was leaving the show because of creative differences and s4 under disney’s control got even worse.

tbh the movie showed me how strong their bond truly was. justin loved a girl he didn’t remember but he believed her and wanted to help her bc he instinctively knew he loved her. and then s3 esp the later episodes destroyed all that. AND HE LEFT HER. HE BROKE HIS PROMISE.

he loves the satisfaction of being Alex's hero when she gets into trouble/creates a problem

he genuinely has a hard time saying no to her

omg harper and alex being friends. i never bought it either but i never brought it up much, with how much some other fans really like their friendship and believed in it…even though harper was barely in s1 and 2 and they went overboard in s3 and 4 because they were trying so hard to separate justin and alex and give them separate storylines that they gave justin a new best friend that he can have scenes with. but i would follow the actors personal life and it didn’t help that selena was not that close with harper’s actress and was with justin’s actor a lot more. and when justin and alex always had more scenes together, watching the show, i believed alex was closer with justin even if they kept saying they couldn’t stand each other. they just had more chemistry, even friend chemistry at that

i wonder if it was because they were cast together before anyone else’s character was written in. going from best friends/love interests to twins to older/younger siblings, they had enough chemistry to be believable in ways harper and alex never was

they also leaned too hard into making justin alex and max into their dad and his siblings.

watching alex break down in the movie and her and justin bonding then watching s3 was so jarring. justin was resentful of how easy alex used her magic but he was never hateful and wanting to humiliate her as he did in s3 and 4

now that i think about it, “in fire in ice” plot reminds me of the plot in the show when the government found out about wizards existing. before they decided not to go through with the plot and just have the whole thing be a test.

omg yes, justin feels like a whole different person in s3-4 that i have to ignore a lot of the episodes; my most disliked episodes is alex’s logo, the wizard of the year one and the show finale that they needed drama to stretch to one hour so justin and max were both ooc. they remembered nothing from the re-test episode about sticking together and family above all and justin has the audacity to get mad at alex for saving his best friend?

and they took away a lot of the heart to heart moments and hugging. the really big s3 justin alex moment where they cuddle and talk about how they’re not normal people and justin was actually back to his s1 self, the actors added it in so it wasn’t even in the script

i was so mad at the wizard of the year episode that’s it’s been erased from my mind. justin from s1 who risked losing his powers to protect her from losing hers bc he loved and believed her so much? is now mad that she saved him, that he taught her to be a responsible enough person. to be a good person that she looks out for others. it’s like the writers were racing to whoever could write justin as a worse person, again, i understand they don’t have much control when disney enforces more rules but ugh. the real justin was left back in puerto rico, idk who s3-4 justin is. he showed up a bit in s3 but was all but gone in s4.

disney ruined a perfectly good show, i remember there was a lot of production issues back then bc they didn’t like how the writers wrote the characters in s1-2 that one of the producers gave up and quit under pressure and disney got free rein over s4

ugh i could write essays in how much he and everyone changed. it was so frustrating. the writing isn’t even consistent, alex goes from saying justin is the one person who would never let her down to saying harper is while they gave harper way too much screentime and separated justin and alex’s storylines. jerry being the protective dad is also gone + him worrying over “daddy’s little girl” and alex using that to her advantage and willing to sabotage alex for harper who he and theresa believe will be the ones to take care of them in old age. apparently not even justin is a good enough son that will take care of them. theresa went from the loving mom, imparting wisdom to obsessing over her looks and wearing alex’s childhood clothes and insisting she’s her sister. max just got dumber. he actually had some brains in s1.
