Wife left me for the weekend so I read a 500 page Calzona fanfic and started re-watching Grey's from Season 12. I remembered it as being very good, but it could also be that playing drinking games with my law school friends was very good. So far, the former - making the doctor who killed Derrick Callie's girlfriend is the absolute pinacle of representation. High fucking art no notes.

I do love Gideon & GtN's voice down to my toes and while "lesbian necromancers in space" is mostly useless, the book does seem to find its way to young gay women who want swordfights and memes. However I think there's still a large untapped pool of insane women who would swear fealty Harrow but look at the first book and think it's pulp. Cest la vie. I am not saying I want this, but my shower thought from this morning: Siuan rescue instead…? They purposefully showed us Elaida using the Aelfinn to become the Amerlyn Seat. Maybe the price was Siuan, Moiraine gets combined with Cadsuane and never dies, tada gay tower of ghenjei lives? 

My book knowledge is super shaky and idk if we want the Finns having the power of resurrection but it doesn’t seem totally implausible? And I would much prefer Rafe to have been referring to this than “they’ll see each other in their next lives 😇”

this is a message for rafe judkins and rafe judkins only: we need to see moiraine kill elaida for this. and i don’t mean with the one power. i want it to be brutal. physical. i want moiraine to go feral. i want elaida to look at moiraine and realise what she did. i want moiraine to literally rip elaida’s heart out with her bare hands. thanks x

Upon reflection - I feel like Siuan as Martyr can work very well in escalating the emotional beats of Salidar. Okay, sure, fine. 

Here’s my issues:

(1) I know the writers and showrunners think they’ve built this fantasy world where racism and homophobia don’t exist, but every single one of its viewers lives in a world where these things do.

(2) Moiraine has to get archway’d…. right? The impact of losing her is huge, and I don’t know how you get around that. So is the plan to “kill” … both of them? 

(also I am forever over media that’s like “we’re gonna kill this character!” and then doesn’t. That’s not subversive. That’s cowardice.)

(3) As noted above, the absolute brutalization of Siuan was gross and so unnecessary. She got stilled and killed, how was that not enough to turn us against Elaida? I don’t need to see her horrendously bruised and bloody with her head on the floor. 

(4) No one was asking Rafe to bop around the queer media bragging about what a fun little show he’s created. All of his “well we had to kill one of them anyway” comments work in response to show-onlys being mad that he killed Moiraine. To not realize what you actually did is going to hit so different than the books (see (3) supra!!) … just dude, seriously?? That level of ignorance alone does not make the show feel like a safe place any more. 

I’ll probably keep watching, I still want season four - but there’s no way that my relationship to the show is going to be what it was. And it really was one of my brightest lights in this darkest time and it fucking sucks. 

No but it’s just the fact that this show deliberately gained the trust of a large queer audience, took our time and money and views and support, then made us watch the non-plot-justified torture and beheading of a beloved sapphic woman of colour in gruesome detail—WITHOUT due process (Siuan was literally told to her face that she’d been sentenced before she could even advocate for herself)—in a time when our rights are actively being threatened and many of us are already living in a constant state of anxiety.

I know the writers and showrunners think they’ve built this fantasy world where racism and homophobia don’t exist, but every single one of its viewers lives in a world where these things do. And to gain our trust and make us finally feel excited about the promise of a well-realised story just to sideline us, kill us, and play us for fools…

Man. I’m just done investing in shows.

So, I feel hurt, betrayed, and manipulated, but also that I shouldn’t feel that way. I shouldn’t have let myself get that invested in the first place. I should have recognized from the beginning how flawed this was and that this wasn’t a storyline to fall in love with. That’s probably true, but I did.

I’m generally bad at articulating my feelings, but I spent most of today stomping around because I felt betrayed by fictional tv lesbians, and it seems like a healthy idea to try to work through why.

There are a handful of characters that I love in part because of how much seeing them on tv would have meant to my teenage, struggling, baby gay self. 

Luisa has been one of those characters from about thirty seconds in.

This just pisses me off so much. Seeing Moiraine get shoved through a doorway would have HIT A LITTLE DIFFERENT RAFE. Like how is that even comparable.

...and also, you know, spoiler alert, she doesn't actually die. So you could have given us a Very Cool Gay Rescue Scene. And had them both alive at the end. Very easily. How was this the best option.
