Great Pastors
Bailey McBride opens up about his experiences with great preachers and the impact of a God focused spiritual leader. The articles opens with a quote ‘I need preaching that helps me to know God better. I don’t n eed preaching about culture and politics. I need to know God and his holiness. The world gives me its values. Preaching should guide me to God and his directions for holy living."

Jesus Jesus Jesus
As Christians we all know the power in the name of Jesus. It is found clearly illustrated in this article written by  CAITLIN BURKE/CBN NEWS. The classic characters are all present in this miracle; faith, hope, love, and Christ.
Man on the Brink of Death Experiences the Miraculous When Captain Calls on the Name of Jesus
[mks_dropcap style="letter" size="52" bg_color="#ffffff" txt_color="#6d7894"]O[/mks_dropcap]n the morning of July 24, Captain Christian Trosvig started the day like any other—he circled up his crew and prayed. Trosvig is a fisherman of more than 20 years. His home port is Kodiak, Alaska. That Monday, he and his crew and about four other vessels were fishing off Alaska's Raspberry Island. "We had a nice big bag of fish, the Lord was providing, and we dumped it in the fish hold. After we did and we got the net rolled up the rest of the way and the skiff hooked up, we had alarms start going off," Trosvig told CBN News. His boat, the Grayling, was taking on water. At first, Trosvig says he wasn't concerned. He and his crew had just pulled in thousands of pounds of salmon and it was natural for the stern to dip lower into the water under the weight. Still, the alarms kept sounding and Trosvig called for his crew to bring out the water pumps. As Trosvig and his crew pumped out the water, one of the other boats noticed that the Grayling was in trouble and came to help. Suddenly, without warning a massive wave hit the crippled boat, rolling it over. Trosvig was thrown into the water, along with one of his crew members. His skiff man pulled him out of the water, and the vessel that had come to help rescued his other crew member. But a third man was missing. [su_quote]I was just in disbelief, I've had lots of fish on that boat, I've had up to 44,000 pounds on that vessel before, we only had about 18,000 pounds on ... Unfortunately, I had a man inside when we rolled over,[/su_quote]Trosvig said. For 20 minutes, they called for the missing crew member and banged on the hull of the Grayling, hoping for a response. Finally, his body surfaced, floating face down in the water. Without hesitation Trosvig dove in. "I lost my twin brother Matt in 2005 overboard. I had a hold of him for a second but I had problems with my wrist, I had got out of surgery two weeks prior...so I couldn't pull my twin out under my own power ... he sank. I flipped on the lights and I couldn't see his body. So when I saw (the crew member's) body there I just dove in after him, I needed to get that man out of the water. Dead or alive I was not going to lose another man's body from the sea," said Trosvig. Only moments after Trosvig dove into the water, a US Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter arrived at the scene capturing the rescue on video. The pilot, Lt. Kevin Riley told CBN News that another swell struck the capsized boat and that's when they saw the missing crew member surface, prompting Trosvig to dive in. [su_quote]He was suspended below the water, so his head was not above the water, but he wasn't sinking either which was amazing considering he didn't have any kind of flotation device on,,[/su_quote]Riley said. He praised Trosvig for immediately responding and doing exactly what the moment called for. "Nobody wants to jump into really cold water because it's dangerous to you, it's dangerous to anyone who enters that water. We knew that we had just witnessed something very brave," Riley said. The pilot added that the water temperature was a frigid 47 degrees with five to six-foot waves. Trosvig was able to get his unconscious crew member into his skiff and immediately started CPR. With each compression, Trosvig cried out the name of Jesus. [mks_pullquote align="left" width="300" size="32" bg_color="#c1e200" txt_color="#6d7894"]"I just said 'Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus' instead of saying 'one and two and three and four,"[/mks_pullquote]Trosvig said. His skiff man told him it was too late; the man was dead. Still, he pushed on, and only four compressions later, the crew member came back to life.He recalled being trapped in the boat when it rolled but found an air pocket he could breathe in. He attempted to escape twice, and on his third attempt, he lost consciousness. Trosvig says it was God who got that man out of the boat and up to the surface, despite wearing no flotation device. The injured man was taken by Lt. Riley and his crew back to Kodiak. His identity has not been released, but he suffered no brain damage and is recovering well. He's even volunteered to go back out with Trosvig next season. "No one is more prepared than Alaska fisherman that we see all over the state every day as the Coast Guard. They're good at what they do, they're always out there helping each other out. The Good Samaritans that responded were really key to this gentleman surviving," Riley said. Trosvig, himself, says he's taking it day-by-day and asks for prayers for clarity. "I got a vessel lined up to go back out, thought I was ready, that I was going to try and get out by the end of the week but the Lord's just telling me to stay planted here and just keep my eyes on him," Trosvig says.

Give, Give and Give Some More | Luke 6:38 Out of Context?
[dropcap]T[/dropcap] oday I came across this commentary from crosswalk.com that opens up a controversial topic among Christian church goers and critics alike.
Have you ever heard this verse quoted right before the offering was taken up?
If you, like me have spent anytime in church you most likely have heard this one before.
Give, and it Will be Given to You: Why Luke 6:38 Needs Context! - Bible Study
Having worked at a Word of Faith church in the television ministry for several years, I've heard numerous pastors, evangelists and church leaders use Luke 6:38 for anything related to sowing and reaping. Do you need to convince your congregation that God will bless them if they tithe? Do you want more people to give into your latest growth project or your evangelistic outreach? Well, Luke 6:38 applies to all things related to sowing and reaping, right? After all, it's one of the Laws of Reciprocity! You get what you give! You reap what you sow!
The problem with that type of relaxed view of Scripture is that not only is Jesus not talking about material giving in this passage, but we are cheapening the meaning and value of what Jesus is saying by taking it out of context.
Just take a look at the passages that surround verse 38.
Luke 6:36-42:
He also told them a parable: "Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye."
"Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you."
The word is a powerful resource. The knowledge and wisdom captured within the pages of the Holy Bible seem almost as unlimited as God. Knowing this, we must treat the word with respect and seek understanding within context.
Let's consider how incredibly deep this verse is in its proper context. If we totally deleted verse 38 from this passage, there would be no question that Jesus is talking about forgiving others. He says[mks_pullquote align="left" width="225" size="24" bg_color="#c1e200" txt_color="#6d7894"]"be merciful… don't judge… don't condemn… forgive"[/mks_pullquote] which is basically like saying the same thing over and over again. Then he drops the verb "give." Is he, out of nowhere, suddenly talking about money or material things in this conversation?
No. Jesus is instructing those who follow Him to "give" forgiveness and an uncondemning attitude in the same amount we desire to be forgiven. We are to be as merciful as God is to us while judging, condemning and forgiving others in the same way we desire to be judged, condemned and forgiven by God.
It's freeing to know that God wants to give me more forgiveness than I can handle. How can you and I focus on "giving" forgiveness to those around us in a way that is pleasing to Him?
The easiest way to do this is by making it a priority. Yes… even a higher priority than money! Consider these words of Jesus today:
But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, 'You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. ~Matthew 5:22-24

Nearly A Million Discover Christ
[dropcap]I[/dropcap]couldn't believe this story from ugchristiannews.com that details the amazing growth of Christianity in Africa. Living here in America, a overwhelming Christian country, we forget sometimes that there are people in the world that still have not heard of Christ.
Crowd at Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke Farewell Crusade in Lagos Nigeria November 2017. Courtesy Photo. Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke’s ministry, Christ for All Nations (CfaN), has revealed that 845,875 Nigerians accepted Jesus Christ during his final farewell crusade held late last year in Nigeria. “These new converts are being ushered into the 8,000 participating churches, to be followed up and discipled into the kingdom of God,” the ministry website said. The 78-year-old Bonnke shared his farewell messages in Lagos in November 2017, drawing 1.7 million people to evangelistic meetings held over five days. 845875 people accept Christ in Nigeria

Christian Charity More Important Now Than Ever
Tumblr media
During recent budget and tax bill debates in Congress, Republicans moved to allocate fewer breaks to poorer tax brackets while providing massive cuts to the most wealthy. They more explicitly revealed a belief that the previous budget, which allocated more resources to social programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, was far too progressive. It’s becoming clear that equity is not at the forefront of their priorities. Essentially, the wealthy continue to legislate their way out of supporting just and charitable causes and thus, legislate their way out of helping those most in need.
Politicians will be politicians. Just as they were then they are now. As Christians we seek the greater good for others and ourselves. Let us pray that we find the benefits in whatever is put forth. In Christ lies the solution to all short comings.
Jesus implores people not only to be generous, but to overturn oppressive systems that create inequality in the first place.

Virtual Church Real Faith
Tumblr media
This story from wired.com notes an obvious shift towards a more technologically advanced world. Technology in the church is nothing new. Teaching and educational platforms are now widely available for connecting to congregations and beyond. D.J. Soto is one pastor that is definitely going beyond.
D.J. Soto believes Christianity can be renewed through worship in virtual space. His VR mega-church is even attracting atheists. The first time D. J. Soto strapped on an Oculus Rift and stepped into virtual reality, he felt like the ancient prophets must have felt—arriving in the promised land that would fulfill his destiny. It was a summer Friday in 2016, and the virtual world he was visiting, AltSpaceVR, was just a year old. Billing itself as a free social network in virtual reality, AltSpaceVR allows its users to toggle between 2-D and 3-D, using a virtual-reality headset or a computer monitor to explore the space. Google Doesn’t Know Christ
Tumblr media
What is most likely to be an overlooked story from wjla.com reveals an obvious issue with the rise AI. Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. In fact the technology is becoming a common utility within many of our homes. We’ve discussed the concerns of smart devices listening and collecting information about us 24 hours a day , 7 days a week. This article  moves beyond the erosion of privacy to tackle another issue surrounding AI. Can it ever really know God?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Audio technology like Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa are becoming a dominant source for information.
Brentwood resident David Sams owns a Google Home and an Amazon audio speaker. He says both give two different answers when asking “Who is Jesus Christ?”
“I even asked Google who is David Sams? Google knew who I was, but Google did not know who Jesus was, Google did not know who Jesus Christ was, and Google did not know who God was,” Sams said.
A huge oversight on the programmers not to get the most basic understanding of Christ into the AI’s database. Even once that’s done, can you imagine a world dependent on a technology’s intelligence that can’t really know God?

Judge Defies Government Protects Christians
A recent story from businessinsider.com illustrates how important and complicated the immigration issue is our country. We all want to be safe.
BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge in Boston is blocking the government from deporting dozens of Christian Indonesians living in New Hampshire while they’re given a chance to fight against their removal. U.S. District Judge Patti Saris ruled Thursday the Indonesians who fear persecution if returned home should be given time to reopen their cases. Saris said they provided
“unrebutted evidence”
showing they would risk persecution or torture if deported. The government had urged the judge not to block their removal. Judge again halts deportation of Christian Indonesians

Did the judge do the right thing? Was it beneficial for him and others?

Acts of Kindness Spreads Love in Cleveland
A good news story from wkyc.com highlights a group of young men spreading love through kind gestures in Cleveland gospel group spreads ‘love’ with random acts of kindness
CLEVELAND — It started as a simple gesture, and it has turned into a movement. Standing in line for lunch grew into a campaign called “Stringless Love.” “My heart was definitely telling me to pay for the next person, so I paid for the next person and that person paid for the next person,” explains Nu Covenant member Mark McMillon. “I told Michael, like dude, we can really motivate people to love other people.” The group of singers and musicians are performing random acts of kindness in the greater Cleveland area. Over the past year they’ve recorded video of the moments and posted them on Facebook. “We could show the world that there’s love out there.

Forget About the Flu Jesus Is the Cure
This story from cnn.com highlights a major misconception surrounding pastors within the Christian faith, in that they are completely out of touch with reality. This is simply not true. Ok, maybe…some!
(CNN)Evangelical Christian minister Gloria Copeland, who sat on the Trump campaign’s evangelical advisory board, is drawing criticism for recent comments about avoiding flu vaccination: “We don’t have a flu season and don’t receive it when someone threatens you with ‘everybody is getting the flu,’ ” Copeland said in a video on her Facebook page.
As a Christian I believe I understand what Gloria Copeland was saying when she stated “We don’t have a flu season and don’t receive it when someone threatens you with ‘everybody is getting the flu’.” We are aware of the flu just as we are aware of Christ and the sacrifice that was made. Our continual focus should be on Christ God. Simply stated, seek the benefit in all things, for all people.
She claimed that Jesus was himself protection from the flu and suggested that people avoid the virus by repeating the phrase, “I’ll never have the flu.” “We’ve already had our shot: He bore our sicknesses and carried our diseases,” Copeland said. “He redeemed us from the curse of flu, and we receive it, and we take it, and we are healed by his strifes, amen.” Her comments come in the middle of one of the United States’ worst flu seasons in recent years, one that has killed dozens of children and resulted in the highest number of hospitalizations recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Copeland is not the first evangelical to call for limited medical treatment.
Speaking affirmations surrounding the flu, keeps your attention on the flu. As Christians we should operate on what we know. Take preventative steps i.e. hand washing and do what is best for you as well as others. I’m not saying don’t get a flu shot nor am saying get a flu shot.
What I am saying is, as human beings we have free will. We have the God given right and ability to control our beliefs and our attention. Put that attention towards more beneficial thoughts and stay away from what you don’t want.

Mister Roger’s Radical Gentle Faith
The Washington Post details an American icon, Fred Rogers. Rogers introduced many of us to the world through his educational preschool television show – Mister Rogers Neighborhood.  895 episodes aired from 1968-2001. It’s good news to hear that one of the country’s most famous show host and pastors will have his story captured in an upcoming film featuring Tom Hanks.
The radical — but gentle — faith of Mister Rogers – The Washington Post
Americans seem to love sharing myths about Fred Rogers, the friendly neighbor known to the world over as Mister Rogers. Consider the one about how he wore
cardigans to cover up his tattoos (false). Or the one about how he was an ordained Presbyterian minister. That one is true — he graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1963 — and it’s far more foundational to Rogers’s legacy than you might think. Rogers was a man defined by his Christian faith, and the message that he taught every day on his beloved children’s show was shaped by it. “If Protestants had saints,” Jonathan Merritt wrote at the Atlantic, “Mister Rogers might already have been canonized.”
The news that Tom Hanks will be portraying Fred Rogers in a coming biopic was met with frenzied glee, as Hanks is one of the few contemporary celebrities who approaches Rogers’s universally beloved status. But even Hanks, for all his charms, doesn’t occupy the same stratosphere of Rogers’s legacy of moral and spiritual importance.
He was a pastor on television in the golden era of televangelism, but unlike televangelists, Rogers’s focus wasn’t on eternal life, but our own interior lives.
Christian evangelists were making a name for themselves preaching about the wickedness of mankind, but Rogers was more interested in his viewers’ inherent value and worth. Evangelists were finding ways the human race didn’t measure up to God’s moral standard. But Rogers said over and over again: “You’ve made this day a special day by just your being you. There is no person in the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are.”

Nancy Pelosi Holds Bible Study on the Senate Floor
Tumblr media
The Web Editors at sojo.net covers Nancy Pelosi on the House floor; doing the very thing that we need more of from our political leaders, reading the scriptures. Whether genuine or a political stunt, Nancy Pelosi Quotes from Bible in Filibuster-Style Speech for Dreamers.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) used her “leadership minute” today to lauch a filibuster-style speech on the House floor, shown on C-SPAN, that called for House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) to hold a vote on legislation to protect the nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Her speech began with a nod to Christian leaders calling for DACA protections.   “The three ‘B’s — business, badges, and Bibles — are imploring Congress to pass a DREAM Act,” she said. “Earlier this month I stood with evangelical leaders to call on the Speaker to bring the DREAM Act to a vote, for the sake of family, fairness, and respect for the spark of divinity within every person.”  Pelosi then read from Luke chapter 10 — the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan.  “The parable of the good Samaritan is one that has been used over and over again to welcome strangers,” she added. “Samaritans were not friends to the person that the Samaritan saved. But he was a man of justice.” Pelosi continued to speak well after Senate leaders announced an agreement that would add about $400 billion in federal spending over the next two years, delivering the military funding boost Trump demanded alongside the increase in domestic programs that Democrats sought.

Do You Really Know Who Martin Luther King Was?
youtube
The Martin Luther King Too Few Know Today – Cornel West – YouTube
Ifound this mentally stimulating piece on the great Martin Luther King. His impact, his genius, and his courage is not completely appreciated. King’s many sacrifices for the benefit of all others is overshadowed and simplified by remembering him solely as a civil rights leader.
Cornel Ronald West (born June 2, 1953) is an American philosopher, political activist, social critic, author, public intellectual, and prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
He has held professorships at Harvard University, Princeton University, Yale University, Union Theological Seminary, and the University of Paris during his career. He is also a frequent commentator on politics and social issues in many media outlets. From 2010 through 2013, West co-hosted a radio program with Tavis Smiley, called Smiley and West.

Passion 2?
The team behind the top celebrity news website TMZ reveals the potential release of the sequel to “The Passion of the Christ.” The film gave a cinema based account of the last day of Jesus of Nazareth’s life; including his crucifixion in Jerusalem.
Mel Gibson’s not dishing out any details about the reported upcoming sequel to “The Passion of the Christ” … even if everyone else can’t shut up about it. Gibson playfully suggests it’s an industry secret, but with Jim Caviezel — aka the dude who plays Jesus — declaring Mel’s sequel is going to be “the biggest film in history” … it’s fair to say the secret’s out and the buzz has risen. For the record, Gibson has talked publicly about a ‘Passion’ sequel … telling Stephen Colbert in 2016 the project was about 3 years away. Mel Gibson My ‘Passion’ Project’s No Secret … But, I’m Not Talkin’
thumbnail courtesy of tmz.com
We’re not sure whether the project will come together. If it does, maybe it will depict the Resurrection. We sometimes get mixed feelings about Hollywood’s portrayal of our biblical history. However, bringing attention to the most important figure in history; if done right, is assuredly good.
