one thing I will say is that a cane is often treated as a beginners mobility aid when it is probably better to think of it as an aid for a specific kind of range of symptoms. it's not helpful to imagine a hierarchy where everyone starts at a cane and "moves up" from there. I used a cane for a while because it was scary to even consider anything "more extreme" and it fucked up my shoulder + my left leg in the long term, because it's not the right aid for someone with weak arms and bilateral pain

a lot of people say "consult a doctor before using an aid" and sure fine if you have the time + money + resources + a doctor who doesn't suck shit, go ahead! I won't tell you not to! but if you don't have that, the better thing to do is to go to public spaces where they have mobility aids available to rent, and try walking around (e.g.) the museum for a while and see how it feels. sometimes you can also rent aids from mobility shops/pharmacies/etc. learn about what your body needs and what helps the kinds of symptoms you experience and work from there

and if the only thing that works is an ""extreme"" mobility aid, despite you never having used one before? well that's what you need and that's what you should be considering. hope this helps
