Grief is so weird

It's more than the initial tsunami of sad that engulfs and drowns you

It is a hollowness

There is a hole in my brain now, somewhere they once took up

And it will not get smaller, and nothing can fill it or even cover it up

I just need to learn to live with it now

For the first few months I will frequently fall in, forgetting the emptiness is there, and I will have to claw my way out

I will eventually figure out paths to take around the hole, carefully avoiding and ignoring it until it becomes routine

Some days I will almost forget it is there until I accidentally fall in again

But every time I fall in it is deeper than I expect, and I still have to climb out

Even if I start to remember where the natural ridges are, it will still hurt my hands, and I will still come out scratched and bloody from the fall
