The slider opens with a soft whoosh, revealing the darkened deck. Despite the several rickety box fans fighting to keep the cottage cool, the muggy temperature has lingered and sticks to Jake’s skin like an extra layer. Out in the fresh air, the night breeze is a welcome relief across his face.

His eyes adjust, easily locking in on the lone figure leaning on the railing.

“Took you long enough.”

Bradley’s back is to him as he stares out at the dark lake. Mingling with the chorus of frogs, the gentle lap of the waves carries up to them. It’s a nice soundtrack as Jake slots neatly next to Bradley, touching from elbow to shoulder. Where Jake’s skin is clammy from his fitful doze on the bottom bunk, Bradley’s is cool to the touch.

“Barnyard wouldn’t stop moving. Couldn’t tell if he was asleep or not,” Jake grumbles.

Bradley huffs quietly and turns, burrowing his nose into Jake’s hair and pressing a soft kiss to his temple. Jake sighs and leans into it, pretense melting away.

“Missed you today,” Bradley mumbles against his skin. And then, “You smell like lake.”

“I’m sure I do.”

Bradley unceremoniously tackling Jake into the water was the only time they’d gotten to be them today. Amongst assorted squadmates and peers, they’d maintained a general distance.

“I missed you, too,” he adds.

Jake is still reveling in the soft breeze cooling his skin, but he can feel the goosebumps up Bradley’s arm. Silently, he passes over the sweatshirt he’d pulled from his bag. The faded USNA Football logo accompanied by Jake’s jersey number looks perfectly at home on Bradley’s broad shoulders.

He yawns as Bradley resettles and pulls him close again.

“Just a little longer, yeah?” Bradley asks, staring back out at the water. Jake works an arm around his back and squeezes. Whether Bradley means to stay up or to keep this thing between them quiet, Jake’s not sure.

“Yeah. Just a little longer.”
