we have got to take the capitalism and consumerist mindset out of fandom (and all life on earth but again, separate post), like. you are not consumers entitled to products by virtue of tendering currency (engagement), like. people who are creating in fandom spaces, be it fic or art or music or meta analysis or whatever, are not production facilities manufacturing supply to meet market demand.
these are enthusiasts and artisans crafting passion projects that we have the PRIVILEGE of getting to see. Not an entitlement to, a PRIVILEGE. do you understand? your favorite fic author is not a mega conglomerate stocking shelves with low quality cheap faux-sustenance. you aren't walking into a grocery store, you are walking into an arts festival, standing in the middle of the green, and loudly crying that nobody there is crafting for your needs at the rate you would prefer.
and in the event that there IS a tendering of currency involved (commissions), you are not slapping down a $20 to buy something mass produced or pre-printed, you are asking an artist to create something for you from the thin fucking air, that did not exist before, and at a level of expertise that requires time, energy, motivation, and persistence. you have purchased a piece of art that doesn't exist yet, sure, but you have not purchased the person CREATING it, who is a human being with their own lives, circumstances, and limitations.
also, and not for nothing, but walking back that consumerist mindset is going to take a lot of the misery and resentment out of your fandom experience too. updates are exciting, and pacing the floor angrily for every second they haven't appeared yet makes it hard for you, the creator, and everyone around you to enjoy them when they DO happen.
a little compassion and patience can go a LONG way. taking steps towards those things is worthwhile, and makes everyone's experience better. stop stuffing people's askboxes with anonymous complaints and try to rekindle what brought you joy about this place to begin with.

"cringe culture is dead" ok but does that include ppl you find ugly, ppl who are into hobbies or fandoms you find weird, ppl w kinks you find odd, autistic people who dont fit your standards, mentally ill people who dont fit your standards, 12 year olds having fun, 30 year olds having fun, furries, fat ppl who dont fit ur standards, or is it just conventionally attractive alt ppl who fit the beauty standard. answer quick
#saw someone the other day dismissing a solid post about how insidious racism can be#because the op was gen x and presented it in a kinda cringy way#like. i’m not saying you have to like everyone you come across cause that’s just not how it works#but the least you could do is not fucking interact (and by interact i mean take a screenshot of the beginning of the post and make your own#mocking the first person for phrasing it awkwardly)

and also: given the choice. what would you choose? you, who have known lightning in your veins, thunder ringing to the sound of your heart’s beat- you, who by necessity has learned the precise swoop of the hand necessary to get the dust bunnies out of the hard-to-reach nooks.
could you go back, where the fantasy you once lived and breathed is now nothing more than fiction? you think about it, and you cannot bear the thought of reading another book with a nonsense magical system- you *know* how magic works, and now all other “magic” words ring hollow.
but could you stay, knowing that you’ve abandoned loved ones and fond memories and coffee, of all things? you can teleport, now, true, but the ones you teleport to now do not, cannot know you in your entirety.
they do not know the joy of singing their hearts out with a small group in a packed car, the sound echoing within its metal frame - the closest thing you’ve got are bard performances. and the concerts here, if you could call them that, are not the same, not the screaming, cheering, airdropping experiences you remember so fondly; they’re lovely, sure, but you miss the strain of your throat from screaming lyrics with thousands of others, the dull ringing of your ears as you walk on aching feet back to the car, grabbing cheap chicken nuggets and fries on the way back because you’re all starving.
it’s one experience of many that your new friends do not understand - and yet, will it not the same when… if you return? your old friends won’t understand either, the feeling of running, racing in a field, leaping up and taking off with newly conjured wings. they cannot understand the intimacy you’ve left behind, the bonds you had with everything — the trees, the birds, the wind, the sky, the world — all of them, severed, with you being left alone.
and yet, you’ll always be alone.
because now, you are of two worlds, and yet you fit in neither — your home has been lost, and you can never go back.
man i love isekai. like. specifically. isekais that examine the reality of being swirled away to another world with no time to prepare
#duck.quacks#duck.writes#duck.inspo#idk i just have a lot of thoughts on this genre#i also feel really normal about being alone with a part of me forever being unknowable. can’t you tell?

idk. too many of them have the protagonist adjust fairly quickly to their new world, and to be fair most of the time there’s magic so the transition is easier because “hey look isn’t this life so much better than the old?”
but i like isekais that examine the characters’ place in the new world, where they know they don’t belong and they do their best to fit in but something is always wrong because this place is not home. but their old life was not home either, it was full of pain and loneliness and strife, things that are alleviated by the simplicity of life in this new world, and so even if this isn’t home, isn’t it better?
and yet, despite the pain, surely there are things that you miss. the food here is not the same- the spices new and delicious and not at all what you remember. and there’s a pang in your chest, because god, does rice even exist here? could you make the struggle meal that got you through college, could you make the same cookies that you remember learning off the back of a chocolate chip cookie package? the people around you look at you strange when you describe cocoa beans and coffee beans and the delicious treats they can make, shake their heads and spread rumors about the fantastical stories you can tell, and you are reminded that you are an Outsider once more

i loveeeeeee nonlinear storytelling. show me where we are. now show me how we got here. the end before the beginning. show me how it was inevitable or how many chances we had to change things(nothing was ever going to change). let's meet in the middle as all the puzzle pieces slide into place hell yeah that's the good shit.
