she  lets  out  a  gasp  and  immediately  collapses  next  to  him  on  the  bench,  placing  her  hands  on  his  shoulders.  “really  ?!  oh  my  god,  you  have  no  idea  how  well  equipped  for  this  i  am  …  have  you  ever  been  to  oregon  ?  some  of  the  best  apples  IN  THE  COUNTRY  !” every  now  and  then,  theodora  would  get  homesick  for  portland.  she  was  excited  for  this  opportunity  to  make  a  happy  floridian  memory  with  something  she  normally  associated  with  oregon.  “also,  apple  pies  are  my  favorite.  oh,  this  is  so  exciting  !!”

He bit back another self-deprecating joke about his baking skills, or lack thereof, and instead gave careful thought to the question. Hopefully his answer would land somewhere in the zone of something he enjoyed but wasn't overly complicated to make. "Well, I've always enjoyed apple pie. So much so, that I actually decided on that as opposed to a cake for a birthday one year." No matter how different life was now, he always looked back on past memories with a certain amount of fondness. "I can't say anyone in my home was much of a baker, though, so I think I've missed out on ever having a freshly made homemade one."

“BREAKING  UP  WITH  YOU  ?”  she  sits  up  a  little  straighter.  “i  mean  …  i  wasn't  planning  on  it  …  do  you  want  me  to  ?”  it's  a  light-hearted  question,  one  she's  definitely  joking  about  –  she  can't  imagine  the  answer  being  yes.  “i've  been  thinking  …  your  life  is  so  different  now  than  it  was  just  a  year  ago.”  this  time  last  year  milo  was  living  in  a  different  backdrop,  working  at  a  different  record  shop,  spending  his  time  with  different  friends  …  a  different  girlfriend.  it  was  a  lot  of  change  for  a  measly  three  hundred  and  sixty-five  days  (  less  than  that,  actually  ).  was  it  all  worth  it  ?  “so  …  yeah,  i'm  curious.  ARE  YOU  HAPPY  ?”

milo  shuffles  between  sections  ,  bon  iver  cruising  on  the  speakers  .  teddy  is  being  patient  ,  letting  milo  do  his  thing  —  &  normally  he  would  feel  bad  about  making  her  linger  .  however  ,  both  of  them  have  figured  out  pretty  early  on  that  they  could  be  doing  absolutely  nothing  and  the  other  would  still  want  to  tag  along  .  they  make  it  work  .  perhaps  codependent  to  a  fault  ,  this  is  their  life  now  .  the  shift  from  conversation  to  conversation  ,  filling  the  space  with  anecdotes  &  sweet  nothings  .  it  isn't  until  milo  finds  himself  deep  in  concentration  when  teddy  says  something  off  the  cuff  .  hues  glance  over  at  his  girlfriend  ,  brows  furrowed  .  “  are  you  breaking  up  with  me  ?  ”  he  blurts  out  ,  vinyl  placed  down  .

a  close  relationship  with  cleo  and  an  even  closer  relationship  with  milo  made  stopping  by  the  record  store  a  must  whenever  theodora  was  in  mango  bay.  and,  these  days,  she  was  visiting  mango  bay  a  lot.  she  bounces  into  the  shop,  not  expecting  the  voice  that  greets  her.  had  she  seen  this  girl  before  ?  she  tried  her  best  not  to  forget  faces,  but  she  was  human.  ever-so-curious,  theodora  asks:  “what  makes  you  think  it  was  a  mistake  ?”

Scout doesn’t look up at first. She’s sitting on the floor, back against a crate of forgotten records, knees pulled up. Her fingers are stained with Sharpie ink and dust. There’s a half-melted lollipop tucked into the corner of her mouth and a cigarette behind her ear, unlit. The shop hums with something low and echoing. Probably a demo tape she found in a milk crate and hasn’t stopped playing since. When she finally glances up, it’s with that slow, steady kind of curiosity. Like she’s trying to decide if you’re worth remembering. "You look like someone who wandered in by mistake..." She noted, voice dry. “Could be on purpose..." The brunette did a once-over before meeting their eyes yet again. "Hard to tell."

“WHAT  THE  HELL  IS  GOING  ON  WITH  YOU,  are  you  okay  ?!  what  had  you  crashing  out  ?"  it  seemed  they'd  each  been  dealing  with  their  own  problems,  which  definitely  explained  their  distance.  she  was  feeling  both  less  and  more  guilty  about  her  absence  in  the  other's  life,  knowing  nell  had  her  own  things  going  on.  less  guilty  in  the  sense  that  nell  probably  hadn't  really  noticed  the  lack  of  theodora,  but  more  guilty  in  the  sense  that  she  should've  been  there.  she's  mid-sip  of  her  wine  when  nell  tries  to  get  more  details  out  of  her,  which  causes  her  to  choke  on  the  drink.  she  pats  her  chest  as  she  lets  a  few  coughs  out,  quickly  shaking  her  head.  “oh  god,  no.”  the  thought  of  milo  and  …  that  …  it  was  bringing  a  blush  to  her  cheeks.  “whatever  is  in  the  middle  of  those  two  scenarios,  i  guess  ?  some  talking,  more  kissing  …  you  know  how  it  goes."

"  i  don't  think  so  ,  but  i  could've  been  crashing  out  and  missed  it  all  so  don't  worry  your  pretty  little  head  about  it.  "  she  reassures  ,  not  wanting  theodora  to  feel  guilty  for  something  that  wasn't  her  fault  —  nell  hadn't  been  in  the  frame  of  mind  to  remember  much  from  that  time  ,  but  she  was  in  a  far  better  place  now.  "  i  definitely  do  keep  up  with  them  ,  notifications  on  and  everything  but  it  must've  not  clicked.  "  because  although  she  wasn't  blonde  ,  she  definitely  had  blonde  moments  but  she  was  just  a  girl  trying  to  survive  and  not  thrive.  "  ok  so  ,  what  does  this  '  hanging  out  '  entail  ?  awkward  silences  over  a  game  of  scramble  ,  or  a  little  ROUGH  AND  TUMBLE  with  some  much  needed  booty  pats  afterwards?  i  need  the  deets.  "  she  teases  ,  taking  a  sip  of  her  wine  ,  anticipation  written  across  features.

“hm  …  does  the  drive-in  count  ?  the  only  employees  i  ever  see  there  are  the  attendants,  and,  if  i'm  being  honest,  THEY  SCARE  ME  A  LITTLE  BIT.”  she'd  only  ever  talked  to  axel  once,  and  it  was  fine,  but  was  he  didn't  really  seem  like  the  type  to  do  favors  for  people.  and,  even  if  he  was,  who  was  to  say  he  was  any  good  with  the  very  thing  they  needed  ?  “i  mean  …  i  know  someone  who  was  very  into  acting  and  all  that  …”  but  they  weren't  really  on  speaking  terms  at  the  moment.  “i'm  not  sure  how  much  he  knows  about  the  technical  aspect  of  it  all.  who  knew  this  would  be  so  hard  ?!”

he  takes  a  long  pause  to  think  about  her  question,  as  if  anyone  he'd  come  across  would've  genuinely  expressed  an  interest  in  levers  and  pulleys…  then  again,  he'd  come  across  some  intriguing  characters  in  his  travels,  maybe  he  did  know  someone?   ❛  someone  that  works  at  a  theatre?  or  behind  the  scenes  on  movies?  they  do  all  that  fancy  work  behind  the  curtain,  don't  they?  ❜

LOCATION:  mango  bay  records STATUS:  closed  /  milo  langley @dcwnfalls

the  store  has  been  long  closed,  and  she  sits  on  the  counter,  watching  as  he  finishes  his  closing  duties.  she  had  come  with  the  intention  of  helping,  but  it  became  quite  clear  that  any  attempt  would  probably  ruin  his  whole  set  up.  her  and  milo's  brains  organized  things  very  differently,  and  it  would  take  more  time  for  her  to  ask  where  each  record  went  and  have  him  direct  her  than  it  would  take  for  him  to  just  do  it  himself.  she's  not  complaining  –  she  enjoys  watching  him  work,  even  if  it's  something  as  mindless  as  restocking.  as  is,  she's  delaying  the  process,  because  he's  kind  enough  to  keep  her  entertained  with  conversation.  there's  a  momentary  lull  in  the  conversation,  so  she  asks:  “ARE  YOU  HAPPY  ?”  there's  no  angle  to  this  question,  just  curiosity.

“is  it  really  so  OBVIOUS  if  i  had  to  ask  ?  i'm  looking  for  something  you  don't  have  to  ponder  over  …"  he  wasn't  an  artist  looking  to  reach  a  certain  audience.  he  was  looking  for  a  cheap  laugh.  “well,  good,  ‘cause  i  don’t  have  a  ton  of  money  anyway.  not  after  the  rounds  i've  just  done  here.”  he  considers  the  man's  suggestion,  wondering  if  he  could  rope  axel  or  margaret  into  a  scheme  like  that.  it  would  have  to  be  something  good  –  that  was  the  only  way  they'd  agree  to  it.  maybe  they  could  load  the  top  three  with  something  …  UNIQUE.  “  hey,  man,  that  means  a  lot.  i  won't  let  you  down.”  he  probably  would,  but  at  least  the  stakes  were  low.

“Obviously Balls," Felipe took the chance to play up indignation, even if it was all for show, "Vowels? Whaddaya think this is, Wheel of Fortune? Ain't no buying them here, pal."

“If you really want more letters to play with, go for more ranks. Space Invaders had f-c-k and y-o-u in first and second place for a while. Don't know if it was jut one person or teamwork makin' the dream work, but it was like finding five bucks on the ground first time I saw it. Go for glory, man. I think you've got it."

“yeah,  a  sign  that  this  town  is  full  of  unwelcoming  SHEEP  who  hate  to  see  a  new  way  of  thinking."  despite  the  other's  unkind  words,  he  types  the  first  two  letters,  pausing  before  selecting  the  D.  “woah  …  i'm  gonna  need  a  promise  of  a  candle  before  i  lock  in  these  initials.”

“shouldn't  that  be  a  sign  ?  i  think  you  should  take  it  as  a  sign.”  sydney  nodded  with  mock  concern,  failing  to  hide  the  smirk  lurking  behind  their  false  facade.  “S,  T,  D.  i'm  touched  you're  giving  me  your  one  good  deed.  i'll  light  a  candle  for  you  next  week.  well,  unless  i  forget.  –  which  i  might.”

“oh,  of  course.  i  mean,  i  can't  imagine  anyone  likes  to  be  messed  with,  but,  really,  I'M  NOT  THAT  KIND  OF  GUY.”  what  type  of  guy  was  he  ?  brett's  not  exactly  sure  he  could  put  a  label  on  it.  surely  someone  else  could,  though.  “well,  you  have  to  laugh  off  the  pain  to  get  through  it,  i  guess,”  he  shrugs,  shoving  his  hands  in  his  pockets.  “could  you  imagine  how  much  life  would  suck  if  i  sat  around  sulking  over  my  misfortune  ?  life  is  what  you  make  it.”  a  sentiment  he  tried  his  best  to  live  by,  ignoring  the  glaringly  obvious  things  that  were  holding  him  back.  “a  sign  to  never  tell  people  what  my  initials  are,  or,  a  sign  that  i,  TIMOTHY  ISAAC  TURNER,  would  be  really  into  tits.”

"  that's  a  good  question,  exactly,  why  would  you?  i  will  confidently  say  that  i'm  not  someone  that  likes  to  be  messed  with.  not  that  you  probably  care  because  you  seem  like  you  wouldn't,  but  just  for  the  record.  "  he  seemed  to  be  the  smart  guy  type  and  she  was  all  way�� too  familiar  with  guys  who  acted  like  that.  way  more  familiar  than  she'd  wanted  to  be.  "  i  guess  that  sense  of  humor  got  passed  down  onto  you  too  then,  huh?  "  crossing  her  arms  over  her  chest  while  listening  to  him  speak.  "  no,  i  suppose  it  can't  really  be  a  coincidence.  i  feel  like  that's  something  you'd  give  more  of  a  thought  about. especially right  before  naming  your  kid.  a  sign?  yeah,  i'd  say  so.  a  sign  to  never  tell  people  what  your  initials  are  because  they  probably  all  end up giving  you  that  '  are  you  for  real  '  kind  of  look.  "

“well,  the  goal  is  to  WIN,  isn't  it  ?  why  the  fuck  would  i  make  things  harder  on  myself  and  say  tiger  or  something  …  but,  since  that  answer  isn't  pleasing  to  you  …"  he  leans  in,  looking  her  in  her  eyes.  "what  animal  would  you  picture  me  fighting  ?  and,  i  beg,  at  least  GIVE  ME  A  CHANCE  at  winning.”

she  blinked  at  him,    then  let  out  a  flat,     unimpressed  laugh  as  she  dropped  the  puzzle  piece  onto  the  table.    “  wow.     you  really  just  went  with  hamster,     huh?  ”     she  shook  her  head,     grinning  despite  herself.    “  i  hand  you  the  entire  animal  kingdom,     and  you  circle  back  like,     ‘  yeah,     i’m  gonna  double  down  on  the  rodent  she  already  picked.  ’     real  bold  of  you.  ”

“are  you  trying  to  hint  at  something  …  LOVE  AT  FIRST  SIGHT,  perhaps  ?  i  could  play  prince  charming  for  a  night.”  and  only  for  one  night  –  any  more  time  spent  with  brett  would  send  someone  running  for  the  hills.  he  snaps  his  fingers  as  she  mentions  her  place  of  work.  “that's  it  !  incredible  work  in  the  tank.  big  fan,  personally.”

❛  how  about…  L,  U,  V?  ❜   she  struggles  to  hide  the  playful  smirk  that  appears,  knowing,  deep down,  her  idea  of  a  cute  arcade  name  was  surely  nothing  like  what  the  other  had  in  mind.  his  next  statement  pulls  an   ❛  oh?  ❜   from  her  mouth,  her  head  tilting  in  response.   ❛  maybe  from  the  mermaid  lounge?  ❜

“you  just  don't  want  to  INFLATE  MY  EGO  …  i  see  the  game  you're  playing,  han.”  he  takes  another  drag  before  passing  the  cigarette  her  way.  “it's  so  crazy  they  want  me  to  even  submit  my  taxes  …  i  barely  have  a  debit  card.”  for  the  most  part,  brett  was  cash  only  –  which  was  becoming  increasingly  more  difficult  as  technology  continued  to  move  forward.  “yeah,  well,  let's  just  hope  i  can  evade  them  long  enough  that  they  just  forget  about  me.”  people  would  definitely  call  him  CRAZY  for  trusting  margaret  with  such  a  task,  but  the  alternative  was  him  doing  it  himself.  “who  ?”  she's  said  a  name,  but  he  can't  picture  a  face.  that  wasn't  surprising,  though.  even  he  hadn't  only  been  here  a  month,  he  was  notoriously  bad  with  faces. 

“  personally  speaking  ,   i  would  not  use  sexy  in  a  sentence  with  you  in  mind  ,  but  i  know  some  freak  would  .  ”  in  fact  ,  margaret  knows  several  freaks  that  would  ,  mainly  because  brett  is  somehow  always  got  some  girl  crying  in  his  texts  .  at  least  ,  that's  what  she  assumes  when  he  opens  his  phone  ,  flinches  ,  and  proceeds  to  close  it  .  “  yeah  well  ,  you're  not  wrong  .  i'll  never  forget  the  year  i  did  your  taxes  — probably  incorrectly  at  that  .  i  guess  we'll  find  out  if  you  ever  get  audited  .  ”  a  loud  noise  comes  from  the  hall  .  margaret  leans  over  the  side  of  the  couch  ,  head  tilted  .  “  must  be  kai  .  he  drags  his  feet  like  crazy  .  ”  at  least  ,  that's  what  margaret  tells  herself  about  her  neighbor  .

“if  i'm  being  honest  …  YEAH.  i  couldn't  think  of  a  better  conversation  topic.  beautiful,  funny,  smart  …  what  else  deserves  to  cross  my  brain  ?”  and  that's  her  mother  talking.  she  could  play  the  role  of  BRAINLESS  HOUSEWIFE  who  only  cared  about  her  looks,  but  only  for  short  periods  of  time.  “nice  save  –  convenient  for  you  that  it's  only  come  after  i've  pointed  out  how  your  original  statement  has  come  across.  i'm  just  happy  that  i  know  your  true  feelings  about  women.”  if  there  was  one  thing  about  summer,  she  could  hold  onto  one  small  untruth  and  run  it  into  the  ground.  she  pushes  her  hair  behind  her  shoulder  and  looks  up,  as  if  deep  in  thought.  “SO  TRUE.  i  can  !  i'm  proud  of  you  supporting  a  woman's  right  to  walk  away.  i'd  say  i'll  remember  your  generosity  the  next  time  i  see  you,  but,  if  i'm  being  honest,  these  run-ins  are  getting  a  bit  tiresome.  don't  you  agree  ?”  but  she  gives  him  no  time  to  answer  before  she  blows  a  kiss  in  his  direction,  heading  out  of  the  shop.

Axel was going to very quickly lose track of how many times he rolled his eyes in this conversation. And sure, he could simply leave to avoid the headache, but he unfortunately was too much of a fan of getting the last word — even while conversing with someone who would challenge that. "Do you always feel the need to make everything about you?" Bold words coming from someone who was just as guilty of what he was accusing the other of. "Because it was more of a general statement about anyone, regardless of gender, who would bother wasting their money on this garbage." He was likely wasting his breath and to be honest, he couldn't care less about whatever Summer wanted to think about him. It wasn't like he was aiming to impress her or anyone else for that matter. "Don't worry, it is. Hope your suburban dream is just as picturesque as you're framing it to be." Mock sincerity filled his voice. "Speaking of, you know you can get back to it whenever you want, right? Seeing as though you're not worried about dealing with the security guard around here."

“RELENTLESS  …  i  can  take  relentless.”  she'd  been  called  many  things  throughout  her  life,  and  this  adjective  was  way  easier  to  spin  than  most.  she  taps  her  chin  as  she  looks  over  the  bottles  in  front  of  them,  immediately  reaching  for  a  bottle  of  tequila  and  beginning  with  a  shot.  “you're  lucky  they've  got  shot  glasses,"  she  comments,  turning  towards  adisila.  “i've  usually  got  a  heavy  pour.”  she  pours  another  one  for  herself,  but  it's  a  tad  lighter.  “CHEERS  !”

she  let  herself  be  pulled,     the  faintest  smile  ghosting  across  her  lips  —  not  all  the  way  real,     but  not  fake  either.    “  you’re  relentless.  ”    she  said,     glancing  sideways  at  summer  with  something  close  to  gratitude,     even  if  it  was  buried  under  layers  of  defense.    “  but  like,     in  a  good  way.  ”    she  gave  summer’s  hand  a  quick  squeeze,     already  bracing  herself  for  whatever  sugary  concoction  was  coming  next.    “  alright.     hit  me  with  something  good.  "
