Dense fog and chill waves blow the temple city Varanasi
Varanasi, situated in the Northern part of India is seated on the banks of the sacred river Ganges. Summer in Varanasi is followed by humid and hot climate. On the contrary, winters in Varanasi is the most favoured season by peoples as well as tourists. This year, the cold waves hit the temple city and make it unbearable for people for people to follow their daily routine life. Earlier this month, the government has extended holidays for schools whereas Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board has instructed to start the school at 10 in the morning and relief the students from the cold weather. Parts of Uttar Pradesh still give shivers to the people. The minimum temperature recorded this year dipped to 1.2 degree Celsius.
Surviving at Kashi has become a tough situation for homeless people who are struggling to keep themselves warm. One such ghat, Dashashwamedha Ghat witness the icy winds where people fight to keep themselves warm. Cold river waves surround the ghat, chill winds that freeze hands and legs and the sky are enveloped with fog. A sadhu who lives in the ghats said, “The nights are icy cold. I am a wandering sadhu. I sleep at the ghats under the open sky as I have no place to live. Someone gave me a blanket and a carpet”. Later on, he adds, “Meditation gives me the strength required to beat the cold. This carpet becomes an ‘asana’ (a mat used for meditation) during day hours, and I meditate on it for hours”.
Kashi is home for the homeless and wanderers who wonder in the city and have no place to live. The ghats of Varanasi is a habitat for such people.one of the boatman uses the boat as a shelter to live at night keep himself warm. The boatman claimed, “Though the weather is cold, I sleep on the boat daily. I have no problem as I have a quilt, a blanket and mattresses. I get up early in the morning to attend to the tourists and take them for boating”.
One among the traveller Anil Kumar Dwivedi and his wife rested under a temporary tent to witness the life in ghats at night. Mr Dwivedi said, “I am on a pilgrimage and wanted to experience the life at ghats during the night. However, I did not find many people here. It is freezing and foggy which is why people are staying away from the ghats. Still, spending time at the ghat was a unique and spiritual experience for us”.
Besides that, at Assi Ghat, people sleep on benches and chairs while in fighting against the chills, people reach Manikarnika ghat and Harish Chandra ghat to perform the rites of their beloved. During the night a deserted look can be seen in Chet Singh ghat, Tulsi Ghat , Hanuman Ghat, Pandey Ghat, Panchganga ghat and Rajghat.

Illuminated ghats of Varanasi to acknowledge carnival of Dev Deepavali
The Dev Deepavali festival marks that the Gods came down to Earth on the day. This festival is celebrated on the fifteen days of Diwali, and River Ganga is paid homage by the peoples of Varanasi. Dev Deepavali is marked with a huge ceremony and ritual as well as it is performed in the Dashashwamedh Ghat of Varanasi. It is marked on occasion of Kartik Purnima where hundreds to thousands of light are lit up, and it appears as if the Ghats of Varanasi has become alive.
The Guru Nanak Jayanti and Jain’s light festival fall on the same day as that of Dev Deepavali. The Uttar Pradesh tourism department initiates a four-day celebration known to be called as Ganga Mahotsav. Many artists and performers from all over the world come and celebrate the festival as well as the people of Varanasi display there culture.
Many years until when the people believed about their existence in the holy city of Varanasi they celebrate every festival in the ghats of Varanasi, offering their prayers to sacred river Ganga. The Dev Deepavali was magnificently observed last year as people of Varanasi do every year. But this year, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was accompanied by legendary film actor Anil Kapoor who added more charm to the Ghat of Varanasi. The principal attraction at the ghats was the earthen lamps that were lit in lakhs and multicoloured lights and the boats that carried passengers from one end of ghat to the other.
In the early morning of Dev Deepavali day more than thousands of people inclusive of tourists who belong different corners of the country assembled and remarked how the holy Ganga is worshipped and the earthen lamps that were lit at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, Varanasi. The Assi ghat and the Dashashwamedh ghat organised laser show along with many cultural events to capture the festive mood of people.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister arrived late in the evening after visiting other ghats and Manikarnika Ashram. Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor took his Twitter account uploading pictures of his own from Dashashwamedh Ghat. The Union Minister Piyush Goyal was also present in Varanasi said "Since independence, many big politicians became prime minister, but Narendra Modi has only done the development of Kashi. The parliamentary constituency of the PM has seen unprecedented development since BJP has come to power."

The agony of people had due to demolition of historic vicinage
Tumblr media
Being called the spiritual and cultural capital of India, Varanasi is called the “City of God.” Earlier it was known as Kashi which means to shine. It is believed when the universe was built, the first ray of light fell on the river Ganga that lightened and brightened up the whole city and Hindus consider it one among the twelve Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The name of the temple city changed to Varanasi in 1956 and Varanasi owes its name to two tributaries that flow through the borders of the city. “Varuna” flows from the north of the city and “Assi” flows from the southern side. Combining both the tributaries name, Varanasi got its name.
Prime Minister NarendraModi’s dream project was to build a hassle-free route for people who travel to Kashi Vishwanath Temple during festivals. Yogi Adityanath and Uttar Pradesh government thought to convert this dream into reality. Thereby Adityanath’s government-sanctioned ₹600 crore for the project after its approval in December 2017. The project was all about to build a passage for travellers that will directly Enroute them to the 18th Century shrine of Lord Shiva, the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Yogi Adityanath proposed that after the execution of the project, it will be easier for travellers to proceed to Kashi Vishwanath Temple from the banks of River Ganga. It will be a direct route for passengers to visit the temple through Manikarnik aghat,Jalasen and LalitaGhat.
To build the 700 meters long corridor it cost destroying homes and shops worth an area of 45,000 sq. Meter. More than 300 homes were demolished, and families who have been residing there since generations also saw their properties being destroyed by the government. The chaos stuck the Supreme Court to back out from being involved in Ganga-Kashi- Vishwanath pathway project.
One of the angry resident smack at Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating, “ Why should be? By demolishing 300 houses, he will lose not even 10,000 votes”. Later on, he claimed, “Varanasi is defined by its galis (narrow lanes) and by creating this corridor, he is robbing Banaras of its very identity.”
The AAP also affirmed that more than thousands of people lost their livelihood because of construction of corridor. “People who have been living and working here have been displaced. Their families lived here for hundreds of years. Now, they are being told to find livelihood elsewhere, away from the centre of the city,”. The AAP also professed that the state government also destroyed some nearby ancient temples. Contrary to this a senior district administrator said, “The idea is that the Kashi Vishwanath temple should be visible to pilgrims from the Lalita and ManikarnikaGhat. So, we will have to demolish some more homes”.
The AamAdmi Party claimed to rebuild the property and comprehended “Varanasi is known for its small alleys and its ghats. They are destroying the very character of this place. We demand that the UP government stop this project and restore all demolished sites. If it doesn’t, we will take this movement across the state”.

Once Must Visit City in a Lifetime is Varanasi
Tumblr media
Varanasi is situated on the bank of river Ganga. Varanasi, while being a city that is famous all over the world as one of the top destinations in India, is largely perceived as a pilgrimage city where one can capture sights of strange Hindu customs, the pilgrims bathing in the incredibly polluted Ganges, saffron-clad Sadhus selling pseudo-spirituality to gullible foreigners, burning dead bodies on the Ghats, the dope hungry hippie crowd, and to possibly experience a 'spiritual awakening' in one of the many temples of Varanasi. Varanasi is considered to be one of the oldest human populated cities of the world. The mythological legacy and aura around this city is quite awe-inspiring. The existence of holy river Ganga add to the mysticism of this truly remarkable city. Hindus consider river Ganga as sacred and believe that all the mortal sins get washed away after a dip in the holy water. Varanasi is popular for its enigmatic Ghats. There are more than hundred Ghats in the Varanasi and most of them are as old as city itself. These Ghats are flooded with devotees throughout the year, who take a dip in water to cleanse themselves from all their past sins. The majestic temples and many other holy sites of this city draw large number of tourists every year. Varanasi is a hub of intellectual and learning centers. Varanasi is also famous for its music and dance. Most of the music, vocal and instrumental both take inspiration from the spiritual and devotional aura of Varanasi. Some of the famous and significant temples of Varanasi where you can meditate peacefully are Vishwanath Temple, Durga Temple, Sankat Mochan Temple, Bharat Mata Temple and Tulsi Manas Temple. The list is not comprehensive and is only indicative of the rich historical landscape of Varanasi and includes some of the “Places to Visit in Varanasi".
• Varanasi Ghats • Kashi Vishwanath Temple • Manikarnika Ghat • Bharat Kala Bhavan • Ramnagar Fort • Sarnath
Varanasi has an ironic ritual of eating sweets (or Mithai, as sweets are called in India) made from milk based products. Like the omnipresent 'Banarasi Paan' shops in Varanasi, one finds sweet shops at almost every way in Varanasi. The view of the varied varieties of sweets displayed at these shops as you navigate the city is a mouth watering familiarity. Looking back in to the rich cultural heritage of Varanasi, it is easy to appreciate the reason for the mind-boggling variety of sweets offered in Varanasi.
