Chapter 3: Home

「ずっとそばにいたの?」
p136, Miss Sherlock Novelization
“N…”
Body hurts. Head hurts. The area around the temples awfully hurts. With drowsiness, opening her eyes slowly, Wato tried to work her voice. Where am I? She tries to remember, in a place where there was no ceiling - but she feels a hard cushion beneath her. Her body is being covered by a blanket, no, more like clothes upon clothes covering her. I see. This is 221B. She’s back.
She was taken to the abandoned site by Yuma, received severe torture. She couldn’t remember well right after being aided by Shibata. Taken to a hospital, hospitalized overnight, she would have come back here by taxi the next morning. After that, she went straight to sleep. Mrs Hatano, she must be worried, Wato tries to get up. However, she notices something leaning against her legs, and she gives out a long sigh.
“Hey… If you keep sleeping on the floor like that, your back will hurt.”
Sherlock opens her eyes, and lets out a big yawn. Have you been by my side forever? Wouldn’t you like to go to bed, too? She swallows the words that were on the tip of her tongue, and sits back on the sofa.
—
Note: Just a short one, also kind of filled in a few more details the drama series couldn’t cover.
Also zutto soba ni ita no? killed me. Could also be translated to “Have you always been by my side?” “Were you here all the time?”
Also, I’m sorry for the inconsistency of grammar tenses. D: English isn’t native to me. Hee!

Chapter 3: Hemingway
An excerpt translation of the Miss Sherlock novel from pages 118-119, 122-125.
It was morning. She had a job, she had something worth doing, moreover, a feeling of new love in her heart, how happy she was feeling… that Wato opened the door of the shared room with light hands.
She washed her face, completely dressed up, she returned to the room - her living companion was still lying on the sofa.
Wato had been doing her counseling sessions and her part-time job, while Sherlock had her own investigations, they had crossed paths without meeting, thus for the past two days, they haven’t had a proper conversation.
Well, seeing that Sherlock was still sleeping, she would continue to let her do so as Wato crept steadily to the workbench. She picked up a blue bottle and held it up. The sunlight shining through the liquid, smiling secretly.
“Ceasar cipher. Polybios cipher. Iroha poem. Anagram!”
Sherlock woke up, spouting out her loud sleep-talking.
Wato jumped in surprise. She was uncertain of the vague characters on the bottle, but she kept hold of the bottle, hiding it with her hands behind her back, showing a smile towards Sherlock.
“G-Good morning. Did you sleep well?”
Sherlock stirred around the mountain of clothes in search of something, she found the object that she was looking for, her cellphone. As she looked at the screen, the sleep from her face vanished.
“It’s from Shiina Yuma. Her sister’s back.” Her gaze came up… saying You’re coming with me as well. As much as I really want to follow you, my circumstances prevent me from doing so.
“It’s time for my shift.”
“Wait.”
Wato stopped. Sherlock approached closer to Wato, peering into her face and bluntly expressed.
“The bottle you’re hiding in your hands is thyme linalool. Its uses include alleviating athlete’s foot. I switched the contents of the bottle yesterday.”
“Athlete’s foot?”
“The aphrodisiac that can attract male bees is in this patch. That’s the one that you wanted, isn’t it?”
Putting something at the back of Wato’s neck, Sherlock smiled at her, a smile that she has never seen before. She retrieved the bottle from Wato. Still with her graceful smile, she went back to her room. Are you psychic?
However, as a result Wato got what she wanted, so she supposed it was alright. The mysterious patch on her neck was radiating heat. Facing her housemate, Wato bowed her head, as she left the room.
———–
“Even though Hemingway is famous for his hardboiled style, his mother would often dress him as a girl when he was young. Because of that, to show his manliness, he would take up boxing, organized a spy team, and lived quite an eventful life.”
“I guess he did, huh…”
While wrapping the pasta full of cabbages and anchovies with her fork, Wato was enraptured by Yoneyama’s words, nodding to what he was saying. Was this the effect of the aphrodisiac patch?
When she had passed by Yoneyama earlier, she didn’t think that he would invite her for lunch right after she nonchalantly swayed her hair gently.
Everything was too easy, going way too well, that Wato became wary and scared. However, it wasn’t all bad. It was quite delightful. At this rate, Wato would very well liked it if this went on until the end of lunch, no, possibly until the end of work even, as she kept listening to Yoneyama.
Her eyes closed, after hearing ominous footsteps from afar. She didn’t have time to look, when both hands of the devil’s grasped the chair firmly where Wato was sitting and spoke with no mercy.
“Come with me. It’s an emergency.”
“How did you know I was here?”
Wato dropped her shoulders weakly. It was dreadful to think about how she immediately pinpointed Wato’s whereabouts. Sherlock peered at Wato expressionlessly. It seemed that she wasn’t aware of Yoneyama’s presence. Before Wato could open her mouth to say something, Sherlock was already ahead of her, words flying like a bullet.
“The headhunter Shiina Arisa wants to get hold of the medicine to eliminate fear. Eliminating fear might sound good, but in reality it’ll be dangerous if a ruthless murderer obtains it, producing a killing machine. But Dr Watanuki’s books only has one part of the password. Therefore, she plans on having me solve the rest.”
Wato suddenly took a breath. She didn’t really understand the situation coming from Sherlock’s mouth.
“Does that mean it’s been solved?”
“Yeah, we were being eavesdropped.”
Sherlock answered, as if it was no big deal, not moving an expression. Wato faced her partner.
“But, what about the data?”
“There’s a possibility that it could be solved soon. There’s no time. Help me find Shiina Arisa.”
Sherlock stood up, pulling Wato’s hand firmly. Wato was confused. Medicine to eliminate fear, murderer and a killing machine, password, eavesdropping. She couldn’t fully grasp the case, as she couldn’t understand the situation clearly. But Sherlock seemed to be in a panic, Wato could only conclude that it really was quite a severe situation.
But, at that moment.
When Wato tried to part their hands, Sherlock’s line of sight finally locked onto Yoneyama. Her eyebrows raised, her voice echoed through the quiet restaurant.
“Oh, this guy? You’re better off without him.”
Yoneyama opened his mouth blankly. His eyes alternately watching between Wato and Sherlock.
“Want to know the reason?”
“Stop…”
No. Please, don’t. Even as I grabbed the cuffs of her coat, there was no stopping Sherlock’s words.
She began mercilessly commenting and criticizing Yoneyama, pointing one after the other, his characteristics and his belongings.
“A Breton striped shirt, LL Bean Boots, Rolex Bubble Back. Copying the style preferred by Hemingway, a wannabe big shot writer, and a narcissist. Where the computer keyboard is being used in modern times, he has a Parker fountain pen. But doesn’t have calluses from writing. He’s actually not a writer, a nobody. Just an irresponsible, half-assed, part-timer.”
“…Stop it.”
“He eagerly reads women’s magazines to chat up women. Wears a fragrance popular with women. In other words, he’s just looking for easy prey. He’s a gigolo. Targeting you because you were a former doctor.”
“That’s enough!”
Wato’s voice echoed, Sherlock abruptly stopping as it did.
She hit the table - her hands hurting - in addition to that, she had raised her voice. Tears of regret came in like waves, but furthermore she was seething with anger. Wato glared at Sherlock.
Why? was the expression written on Sherlock’s face. That’s right. You’re this type of human being. The type of person who wouldn’t know the pain of what her partner is feeling. People are just only “information” for you.
Wato was suffering, she was crying, you couldn’t possibly know why, would you? Wato bit her lip. Her voice hoarse as she said.
“Now I know why you don’t have any friends. Stop messing around with me. I’m not going with you.”
A short silence. Sherlock stared at Wato, eventually letting out a weak laugh. Her words were short.
“I see. Then that’s fine.”
She didn’t push it any further. She didn’t feed into the emotions of Wato. Sherlock merely turned around, and strode out of the restaurant without looking back. The atmosphere became quiet. As Wato was still standing, Yoneyama with his voice of uncertainty said.
“Ah… I’ll, I need to go deal with the stock list of books. I’ll leave first.”
Wato could only stare at her hands, while holding back her tears.
“She’ll pay the bill,” said Yoneyama, even that she couldn’t bring herself to react to. She could only feel the continuing painful numbness of her hands.
———-
Notes: Not much of a difference from the drama series, but again we are able to see a bit more of Wato’s feelings.
A few things - Yoneyama’s shirt is described as マリンボーダーのシャツ (marin bo-da- / marine border) and it confused the crap out of me. Looking at the drama series translation, they said Breton striped shirt (which I followed because LOL, lazy fuck). However, a kind soul saved me from confusion @planeswalkered and explained to me that Breton striped shirts are marine border shirts, which are sailor striped shirts, called marinière in French.
Another thing, Sherlock ain’t shy with the hand holding.
On a personal matter, translations are slow because I was slacking off work and I’m trying not to. Haha, but Sherlockのために, IDGAF. (I swear I’ll be cringing at that sentence in an hour or two).
S/O to @planeswalkered for being so dang nice.
