A pained look appeared on his face as he once again was unable to recall the word he was looking for. Fine.  Was the one in question. Once he gets back into the lab he’ll be fine, that’s what he kept telling himself and he had to believe it, he had to. 

"I need ta get…get…back. Need ta get back.”

"I know Fitz. I'm not keeping you here to be cruel. You have hypoxia."

Jemma rested a hand on her forehead, exhaling as she  tried to keep herself together. This was her fault, her life had almost cost Fitz his and now  she was helpless when he  needed her most.

"You're not ready to go back. The rest of the team is managing fine without us. We aren't going back until I'm sure you're ready."

"Like I said; we were in love—And she was an asset." He went on. "Not only that but she’d been rebellious and as it happens they caught us trying to flee. She wanted out because she didn’t know what she’d signed up for when she joined Cybertek." 

He stopped for a moment to go over what exactly he’d told her in his head. He had to make sure he didn’t give too much away even to Jemma. 

"They pulled me in and trained me," he said carefully. "They said I was a quick learner and sighted the resentment towards my family as a way to fuel my rage" 

He left out a very important part of what else happened to him in HYDRA because he might need that information to get him out of there later.  ”They keep me around; they keep her in line and it’s something to rub in mum’s face later.” 

"If you tried to leave, why did you hold out on telling us until now?" Jemma snapped. Had they known that he wasn't completely loyal to HYDRA, Bobbi might have gone easier on him, she wouldn't have had to watch his interrogations, they might have considered letting him go. These were all lies, she knew that, but it felt better to think that he could have stopped this.

"Family resentment? Our parents provided the same opportunities for you as they did for me. If you were good enough to be a HYDRA agent, you could have gotten into the academy." Jemma stopped  herself from going any further, that wasn't the point of this. That  wasn't the information Coulson wanted from him.

"—Your training? Were you just a field agent?"

"Well—yeah but I got out, certain things that happened turned my opinion away from it and I realized everything they were doing were for the wrong reasons" he exclaimed, rubbing the back of his head nervously.

"And how long did it take you to realize what the Nazi's were doing was wrong?" The question was muttered under her breath, paired with raised eyebrows as she wrote his former affiliation down. "If you don't work for them, what were you doing in San Juan?"

Fitz shook his head as he stood up from the bed, not wanting to stay in hospital any more. It was too sterile and too fake he didn’t like it. And apparently he had been in a bloody coma for nine days he didn’t want to stay here any more.

"No I need to get back to….to….the…word what’ the word? Gimme the word, Jemma!”

Jemma was a woman on the edge of breaking. How many times had she explained to Fitz what had happened to him? Why he needed to stay. Yet he still wanted to go back to the lab and she was in half a mind to take him.

"Fitz, I'm sorry... You're not ready to leave yet. You know if I could let you, I would. You know that - I'm sorry."

Where I've been; I know I've been really inactive lately, it's down to multiple things. I started back at work last week and I'm doing killer shifts (working open to close when others are on half days) and by the time I get home, I basically pass out and it's not helped by the fact that I seem to constantly have a headache. I'm also on an apprenticeship so that's a lot of work and I'm struggling to find the time, but I promise the moment I get time to sit down and write, I will.
