A Guide to Classic Coquette
The look that started it all; Classic Coquette (also known as vintage americana) is what you should think of when you think the word "coquette".
Originally known under the name "nymphet" during its peak on 2014-2017 tumblr--also known as the "og era", the look was greatly inspired by the 1997 adaptation of Lolita, with its 1940s influence mixed with 2010s tumblr girl/indie fashion such as American Apparel and took lots of influence from Lana Del Rey's Born To Die/Paradise era with its inspo from Black American fashion, Chicana fashion and old hollywood looks.
Color Palette
Pure americana: red, white and blue. But those aren't the only colors you can enjoy! Pinks and yellows and peach (for a 2k14 throwback) also make up a lot of the accent colors in this look.
Patterns and Details
Gingham is the #1 pattern you think of when it comes to classic coquette and for good reason; it encapsulates that joyful, never ending summer vibe. But you can also go for polka dots, florals (especially rose) and bow prints. And fruit prints like cherries, strawberries and even lemons are also super cute.
Details like scalloped hems, lacey edges and smocked fabrics are also popular.
For the 1940s vibe look for nautical/sailor style outfits.
Tops
Halter tops, tube tops, bardot tops are the way to go. They're flirt, cute and look great on everyone. Flannels and button up shirts are also good for a more laid back look. For the traditional tomboyish flare, graphic tees are great, even if it is a baby tee fit.
You can also wear polo shirts and henley shirts for school or more professional settings
Tops normally go with matching sets you can get off peilieeshop or etsy these are similar or exact replicas of what dolores wears in the 97 film!
Bottoms
Tiered ruffle skirts, denim skirts/shorts and sailor shorts are perfect. Keep shorts high waisted or mid waist for the best silhouette and look for pleated skirts (especially the AA/LA apparel tennis skirts)
Also make sure to have multiple pairs of good denim jeans, not skinny jeans but regular straight legs.
Hosiery
White bobby socks and ruffle socks are the best for every day. but thigh high socks are also good options if you want to add some flare.
For winter, look for red or white tights.
Dresses & Rompers
Sundresses in the aforementioned patterns are of course the most common, but you can also find vintage style dresses like Dolores' on modcloth or etsy! And of course you cannot forget rompers. You can get them however you like but sailor style rompers or light blue ones in general are the most common.
It's also good to have a pair of overalls, just makes sure they are a loose fit. They can be jeans, shorts or even overall dresses.
Shoes
Sneakers!!! Converse are the most popular in red or white but i recommend the Skechers Roadies as well they're super comfy and cute.
Saddle shoes are also the most popular shoe for this look, as they are versatile and work with both casual and dressy outfits. Mary Janes are another good choice.
Outerwear
Cardigans will be the most popular, but denim jackets and flannel shirts are a great addition for that traditional tomboyish edge.
Makeup
The iconic red lip is a must. It can be glossy, satin, or matte, but a red lip is the most important part of the classic coquette makeup look. It can be intimidating so just play around until you can find the perfect shade and finish.
Blushy cheeks are also important, reds, oranges, and pinks are the most popular but go for a shade that matches your natural blush tone for that perfect flushed "ive been outside all day" look.
Long fluttery lashes can be achieved with mascara or lashes but go for something that emphasizes how wide your eyes are or gives that illusion.
Doe eyes are also achieved using brown or black liner just to rim the upper lash line with no wing, but pin up style wings are also perfect.
Fragrances
Fruity, girly and sweet are the way to go. Look for scents with notes of cherry, strawberry, vanilla, raspberry, and honey, or light florals like daisy, lily of the valley and soft roses.
