This might sound stupid but I actually didn't know Invisible was a suicide note, so once I found out I told some of my friends and they didn't believe me. Andie do you mind like explaining why Invisible is a suicide note, with like examples and stuff?

First, it isn’t stupid. Songs mean different things to different people. I learned in my studies of classical music how to analyze it, and there are a few reasons I, personally, understood this song to be a suicide note. 

First of all, the type-writer sounds at the beginning and at the end, bringing the image of someone sitting at a computer typing as the song goes. It’s like the person is literally writing the note. The story being told in the lyrics is happening in real time, as if the person is writing the words as they’re singing.

The lyrics themselves are very sad of course, but they’re also very final. 

I was already missing before the night I left - “left” is past tense. The person isn’t leaving, they’ve left. They’re already gone from the “home”, they’ve already run away, presumably to the place where they’re going to kill themselves. I imagine a motel room, or some place where they won’t be found right away. I just walked away is more proof of this. They aren’t planning on walking away, they’re already gone. 

Suicide notes often include the person giving reasons for the act they’re about to commit, to justify it.No one sees me. Another day lost inside a memory of someone’s life that wasn’t mine.Just me in your shadow and all of my regrets.Who am I when I don’t know myself.

These lyrics are all very hopeless, painting a picture of a life that the writer believes isn’t going to get better and a situation that has no happy ending.

Then there’s a big musical climax, where the vocals go up an octave, the strings get louder and quicker and more intense. This part is very emotional, the intensity of the music here represents fear. 

Then suddenly it stops, cuts off abruptly, and goes back to the single acoustic guitar and the typing sounds. The swell of emotion ends quickly, as if the person had a moment of panic and then suddenly became very calm. Determined, in what they’re about to do. They’re suddenly not scared anymore, because they’ve made the decision to do it.

Another day, the walls I built to keep me safe I can’t escape, it’s too late is the last line. Those words are very final, but nothing has been solved throughout the song. None of the problems the song describes get fixed. It just ends. 

“I can’t escape, it’s too late” as the last line of a song is a very powerful statement. It is an ending, but not a happy one. It’s too late means there’s nothing more that can be done to fix anything.

Then there is another emotional swell of music, just strings this time, and it ends with an incomplete cadence, on a minor chord. That is unusual in music. It’s especially unusual for a song that is in a major key to end on a minor chord. This is very intentional. The purpose of an incomplete cadence in music theory is to leave the listener feeling like the song is unfinished. It leaves you feeling uneasy because we want there to be one more chord, so the cadence is complete and the song feels like it’s over, but they leave us hanging. In my mind that signifies the life that was just cut short, and all the family and friends who are also left hanging, without any closure.

This song, if you break it down like this, is an amazing look into how talented 5sos are as musical composers. There are so many layers to this song, and it’s miles beyond the level of composition that usually goes into the songs you hear on the radio, that have mostly nothing beneath the surface.
