Johnny Cooper - The most immediately striking thing about Cooper was that he loocked barely old enough to be a Boy Scout, let alone a soldier. Soon after the outbreak of war, at the age of seventeen, he quit an apprenticeship in the wool trade and bribed a recruiting sergeant to swallow the obvious lie that he was twenty (Ben Macintyre - Rogue Heroes).

Why do sidsledge fans only ever sell it as childhood friends forever? It's kind of boring, is there something else to the ship that I'm missing
i find their relationship extremely interesting and sickos, personally! and i think that 'childhood friends forever' is simplifying it a bit. yes, they were friends growing up and yes, they stayed friends until they died. but that ignores the massive, agonizing shift in their relationship caused by the war, which is the meat of why i love it!
i think the childhood friends plot is interesting bc 1) it's completely unique in the hbowar sphere. we don't really see any other pair have such a deep context before the war, which is cool! 2) they don't go to war together. if they were childhood friends who served together and came home together, i agree it would be pretty boring. there would be no change. but here they experience everything together up until that point, and then suddenly have to go through the hardest thing they've ever done without each other. and then when that's over, they realize that it's changed them both in ways that the other will NEVER understand, bc it's the only thing they haven't experienced together, which 3) makes that postwar disconnect hit wayyy harder for me. a lot of ships face the issue of 'how do we relate to each other after the thing that brought us together is over? how do we move forward?' (which i LOVE) but i think it's even more agonizing when they're trying to return to the same place/time, and serve as an unavoidable daily reminder to each other that they can't.
it's almost an inversion of the usual 'the only thing we have in common is the war' dynamic: 'the war is the only thing we don't share,' which i think is a really cool and unique thing to explore. childhood friends who remain close (or who want to remain close specifically the way they were before) but have lost ownership of parts of each other that they can never recover IS extremely sickos imo!
idk that we're "selling" that, though; it's just what it is. them being childhood friends is historical and show canon, and it informs every part of their dynamic/arc. regarding "something else:" i think there's a lot of interesting stuff there! the mary houston torture nexus, their differing views on how to cope with the war/the Right way to move on, etc. but all of those themes cannot be separated from the context of them as childhood friends. it's just a fact of their relationship, and pretty foundational!
if you're not into that, then you might just not be into sidsledge. and that's okay! but that is objectively the cornerstone of their relationship, and not something we're just exaggerating for fun.
#YESSSSSS!!!#it's so fascinating to have two best friends who went to the same theater of war but at different times#it being the war as the one thing they didn't experience together when it pulled together so many other guys#sidsledge

Bill is partying in London, gets into some kind of half hidden bar with someone else, Babe, Luz, Toye whoever you want. Realises what kind of bar it is. Sees Hall getting Chatted up by an English officer. Gets protective. And then takes Hall to some kind of sketchy ass hotel bc who else can take better care of Hall than him?
