39 Avery
Avery wandered down the streets of some town he ended up in. Lately he hasn't left Arkansas at all even though he's been trying hitchhiking around so he could have some more luck finding Kayden. But everyone he has traveled with has just stuck around Arkansas.
He comes across a small local coffee shop, he had some money on him that could probably afford a simple drink, plus he was a bit thirsty. He walked towards the coffee shop and opened the door. He was hit with the smell of coffee being made immediately and there were very few people in the cafe despite it being the middle of the day.
“Hi! How may I help you today sir?” The girl at the front counter asks him.
“Oh uh..I’ll just get a simple coffee.” Avery tells her.
“So what flavor and size?” She asks.
‘Great, I forgot the workers here always want you to be specific.’ He thought.
“Just give me whatever is your normal coffee.”
“Alright! I’ll let you know when it's ready!” The worker says to him.
“Alright, thank you.” He thanks her while giving her a smile.
Avery went towards the back of the coffee shop after he got his coffee. He has been feeling more tired lately, probably due to the lack of sleep he has been getting and the stress he has been feeling. He's been trying to find any clues on where Kayden could be, but he has had no luck finding anything.
“On this afternoon's news we'll cover the raids that have been happening at harvest camps across America.” A man's voice said in the distance.
Avery looked up and saw on one of the TV's in the coffee shop the news was on.
“Over the past couple months we have faced two raids that seem to be caused by a group of feral AWOLs.”
“The latest raid that happened at Moon Crater harvest camp had numerous injurys and deaths like the one at Cold Springs.”
‘Cold Springs.? That's where I was.’ He thought.
The tv reporter's words started to become gibberish in his mind as he started to realize something.
‘I remember back at Cold Springs before I passed out there was a raid happening and that Kayden ran over to me.’
‘Wait, that would mean Kayden ended up in that AWOL group! I mean how else could she have found me?’
Avery grabbed his coffee and got out of his seat.
‘If I want to find any more clues about Kayden, then I need to learn more about that group.!’
..
Avery approached a local library he happened to pass by earlier, this was one of the only places he could think of that could help him learn more about the AWOL group.
He opened the door to the library and it was perfectly quiet, nobody really goes to librarys anymore so he would basically have the whole place to himself. He looked around to see if their were any kind of computer stations, it was uncommon to find them still but this town seemed to be on the more older side. Luck seemed to be on his side today after wandering around a bit he found an empty computer station.
He sat down on the hard cold chair as he booted up the computer, hoping to find more information around them.
It was around sunset now..He had zero luck finding any other information around the group called the Stork Brigade. All he got was the information he got from the news report back at the coffee shop and just how with each camp the brigade raided more people would join.
He put his head in his hands and looked down at the ground feeling defeated, he groaned in frustration.
‘The only luck I’ll ever have finding her is if I ever see a huge group of kids.’ He thought.
‘But that's almost impossible, I don't even know where the brigade is right now!’
Avery felt himself start to become further stressed than he already was.
‘I could call my dad and see if he can help me.’
‘But what if that group is able to track him down, I don't wanna put him at risk after I just met him.’
He got out of his seat and tried to take deep breaths to call himself down.
‘Maybe I just need a small break..Yeah that would be nice.’
..
Avery makes it back to the hotel room he had been squatting in for a bit unnoticed. He took his jacket and shoes off then walked towards the bathroom.
The shower water felt nice against his skin, it was a good way to get rid of his stress. Even with the scar and prosthetic arm, it still felt the same. It had been awhile since he took a nice shower, of course the harvest camp had you shower, but it didn't feel the same back then.
As he showered, he thought back to the past two years.
‘I remember meeting Kayden around November or so, then we went on the run for a while..’
‘..Then when she almost died from hypothermia we met Miles and stayed at him safe house for a bit, then I hung out with Ryder for a while.’
‘After that I saw Kayden again and we made it to the graveyard, that raid there happened but after that everything seemed normal even though we both were still considered AWOLS..’
‘..But what norm got ruined when that other raid happened and I had to go to Cold Springs..with Ryder.’
‘Ryder..’
‘If he was still here we probably could've been dating right now or plan on living together once he also turned seventeen..But that'll never happen since he rejected me..’
‘..Things will get better though eventually and me searching for Kayden will be worth it.’
‘I’ll live with my dad and if he's nice enough, he’ll probably allow Kayden to live with us too.’
Avery turned the shower off and got out of there while he wrapped a towel around his waist.
He went up to the bathroom mirror and wiped the fog covering the mirror, looking at himself. He felt the skin that covered the right side of his face, rough and dry, but maybe one day he could try to find a way to get his old skin and eye back, that isn't from an unwind.
‘It would be nice if I got that side of my face back..’ he thought.
He looked down at his prosthetic arm, it was modern and sleek along with it being easy to use. He flexed his arm and moved his fingers some, he then put both of his arms side-by-side.
‘..I like my prosthetic and all, but I wouldn't mind if I got an actual arm like mine soon.’
He put his arms down and grabbed a nearby robe to cover himself in, he didn't want to walk around in a towel all night.
Avery turned off the bathroom light and walked out of the bathroom. He then laid down on the hotel bed, it was a bit stiff but it was still able to be comfy.
‘Tomorrow will be another chance for me to find Kayden, or at least learn where she could be.’
‘I just hope I find her soon..’
He closed his eyes and started drifting off into Dreamland, he didn't know how long it would take for him to find Kayden.
But he knew it would be worth it in the end..

So this is the stupidest question ever, but what do you write on? Because I am trying to figure out if I have to write on google Docs and transfer it to my phone than onto tumblr or if I can just write on tumblr
Hey, dw, no stupid questions here! Personally I like writing on Docs to format it like the actual books, (It also helps to have a backup in case shit goes sideways.) Also, I’m not sure what generation your phone is so this might not be an option for you, but it couldn’t hurt to download the docs app to have your work synced across devices.
I shall give you protection against writer’s block and may you have a prosperous time writing! Hehe.

I’ve always loved this corrupted picture on Pinterest, because instead of staying silent it now looks like Roland is speaking to Hayden in Morse Code.
Hayden: You know, they say one out of every four people is gay. That means one of the people in this basement is gay. Oh, I hope its Connor—he's really hot.
Roland: -.-- --- ..- --..-- / -- . --..-- / ... . -..- --..-- / -. --- .-- -.-.--

38 Kayden
TW: A bit of a violent/graphic scene
The mines are filled with distant chatter like usual, Kayden walks through the mines alone for once. She was able to convince Tommie that she had to go to the bathroom, she obviously didn't but he didn't need to know. She just needed some space from him, day by day he was just getting more and more controlling over her.
‘I need to find a way to get away from him soon.’ She thought.
The mere thought of Tommoe getting more and more controlling as time passed by made her feel a bit sick.
‘I could go find Sierra and hang out with her.’
‘..But what if he finds a way to make me stay away from her?’
‘He already tried to make me stay back during the last raid.’
Kayden started walking a bit faster as she got lost further in her thoughts.
But then a sudden unexpected sound went off.
“BANG! BANG! BANG!” The sound of bullets went off in the distance.
She covered her ears out of reflex and she can hear the same sound over and over again.
‘What’s happening?!’ She thought as she looked around.
‘Maybe I can find a place to hide, then I can be safe.’
She turned her head around and saw a nearby room which seemed to have nobody inside.
Kayden started to run over there. Whoever was firing those bullets probably wanted all the Stork Brigade dead and she didn't want to die today.
But before she could reach the room, she felt a sudden pinch hit her shoulder.
She felt herself quickly start to cut in and out of consciousness, she tried to turn her head around but she felt a bit nauseous.
She fell onto the dirty rough grounds of the mines as she slipped out of consciousness..
..
Her old room..She was having that same dream she had over and over again.
Kayden knew well now how this dream goes, her cat shows up and she pets them, then Avery shows up and joins them.
“Meow!” Her cat says as she hops up on her bed.
What was her cat's name.? She couldn't remember anymore and it's appearance was all a blur to her. But she still pet them anyway.
Now Avery would show up soon.
A knock came from her door as she petted her cat.
“Come in.” She simply says.
The whole entire room was silent for a few moments, then the door slowly opened.
Her eyes widened in terror when the door fully opened.
“Avery.?” She manages to speak out.
He stood in the doorway..But he was different..
He looked messed up, bloody and exhausted, and his face..It was gone just leaving an endless void.
Her cat hissed and jumped down from her bed as Avery walked inside her room.
He looked almost similar to when she last saw him at Cold Springs.
She wants to say something, just anything, but her dream isn't letting her.
Before she could even react Avery lunges at her pinning her down on her bed. She felt his hands go on her throat as he started to choke her.
“WHY DID YOU DO IT?!” He shouts as he grip tightened around her throat
She tried to speak but all that came out was just her trying to get air, she felt herself start to tear up too, he would never do this.
“LOOK AT WHAT YOU DID TO ME.!” Avery yells as grip got further tighter.
Kayden felt herself start to pass out as her vision was starting to go in and out.
She could hear the distant sound of cheering like someone was cheering Avery on to kill her.
..
Kayden opened her eyes, her vision was blurred and she could hear the same cheering from her nightmare. Everything was so loud and she could feel someone holding her up.
She slightly turned her head to see who it was..It was Tommie of all people and he looked concerned and a look of dread covered his face.
She turned her head back away from him, how did Tommie even find her and what were those people cheering for.?
As her vision focused more and her ears were adjusting to her surroundings, she finally knew what those people were cheering for.
They were cheering for Starkey.
She felt a chill go down her spin at that thought which was now her reality.
‘I need to figure out a way to get out of here soon.’ She thought.
‘If I can even get out of the Stork Brigade alive.’
She moves herself off of Tommie and tries her best to sit herself up, whatever hit her was super strong.
‘And if I can even get out of here without Tommie knowing..’

37 Avery
The sun began to set on the ranch that he lived on, no, the ranch he and Ryder lived on. He can't remember how he was able to get his parents ranch, probably inherited it or something.
Their both having some small talk as he can hear the sound of the crops blowing in the wind, their dutch shepherd having a blast running around in the front yard, and the distant sound of cattle mooing.
This..This was the life Avery meant to live after he left the graveyard. No harvest camp, no prosthetic arm, him not having a massive scar across his face, not searching for Kayden..and him finally living with Ryder.
His dream was peaceful..
..Until Ryder said something else.
“Why did you have to stay whole?”
A surprised and concerned expression came over Avery's face.
“What.?”
“Why did you have to live?!” Ryder shouts.
The peaceful scene around them starts to turn chaotic as their dutch shepherd begins to bark, the clear sunset starts to get covered with gray storm clouds, and all the cattle they had all start loudly mooing.
“We could've lived like this, but you know that was almost impossible!” Ryder says.
“You were afraid of rejection and you got it!”
Avery could feel tears start to build up in his eyes, the worst thing about dreaming is that your mind knows your greatest fears.
“Now you're all alone now and you're searching for your best friend who could be anywhere in the world!” Ryder says to him.
The tears that built up in Avery's eyes were now flowing down his cheeks.
“I could've lived Avery!”
“I know.!” Avery says.
“We could've been together! But you never knew I wouldn't feel the same!” He tells him.
“Ryder-” Avery tries to say but gets cut off.
..
Avery opened his eyes and could feel dried tears on his cheeks. He could feel himself breathing heavily as he stared up at the ceiling. It was nighttime out and every few moments he could see the light of street lights or other cars passing by.
He wasn't on a ranch looking out into the sunset with Ryder. He was stuck in reality in the back of some randos car.
“Are you okay?” A voice asks.
Avery turns his head around and connects the voice to the guy who was letting him hitchhike.
He's quiet for a few moments thinking if he should tell the driver or not.
“..Yeah, I’m fine.” He tells him.
Ever since he had gotten out of the hospital he's been using a wide variety of transportation in order to try to find Kayden. A main way he has been traveling has been hitchhiking. It isn't the safest way to travel obviously, but it was either that or taking a bus or train.
People had been cautious to pick him up so it was rare to find a nice person that would give him a ride. An average person would probably get immediate red flags by looking at Avery due to his new appearance, having a big scar across your face and up to your forearm doesn't exactly scream friendly.
He could stick to walking around, which he had done, but it takes longer to walk on foot rather than using transport.
Avery felt tired, he wanted to go back to sleep..But what if he had that same nightmare again. He sat up and decided to look out onto the night, hopefully he would get closer to finding Kayden..
..
It was around early morning, the sun was up but barely anyone was out. He could've ended up in a small town or not everyone was in the mood to leave their house right now. The weather was a bit foggy and humid from the previous night's rain which felt oddly nice.
Avery approached a gas station, he was back to traveling on foot for a bit cause he needed some food and he had to go to the bathroom. Upon entering the gas station it only looked like the cashier was there but they seemed half awake, which was good. He had resorted to stealing food due to not having any cash on him and he would rather not dig in trash bins for food.
He walked down various isles to see what kind of snacks he should get. His eyes then saw a couple of chip brands he liked, he grabbed them and stuffed them in his jacket then zipped it up. As he was beginning to leave the gas station he heard a voice he never expected to hear again.
“Avery? That you?” The voice asks.
Avery turns around and sees the familiar old man who had saved him and Kayden long ago. It was Miles!
Miles seemed shocked by seeing him again, it was either due to his new appearance or that he probably never saw the people he housed again.
“Well whatcha doing here?” Miles asks him.
He hesitates to answer for a moment.
“..Just getting some snacks.” Avery tells him.
“I didn't expect ya to be here, I thought you would be long gone from here by now.” Miles says, “How about I get you some breakfast kid? You seem you need a good meal.”
Avery stood there quietly for a moment.
‘Should I really go get breakfast with him?’ He thought.
‘I mean he did save me and Kayden back then..’
‘..And it would be nice to have a proper meal.’
“Sure, that would be nice.” Avery answers.
..
Miles drove Avery up to a diner that was close to the gas station he was at. It seemed like a family owned diner and not like a franchise diner. The diner was quiet and barely anyone was in there at this time in the morning. Avery and Miles sat towards the back of the diner while he could smell various kinds of breakfast foods being cooked in the kitchen.
“So kid..What have you been up to lately?” Miles asks him.
“Well..uh..” Avery tries to answer but he can't think of anything good to answer.
Miles silently waited for him to answer.
Avery started to feel nervous, everything that has happened to him for the past couple of months is nothing good. He also didn't want to reveal too much to Miles, he took care of him and Kayden along with Ryder for a while. But he couldn't just tell him everything that had happened.
Miles seemed to notice he couldn't come up with an answer.
“Do you know how Ryder and Kayden are doing.?” He asks.
That question hit Avery hard.
‘Ryder, I can't tell him what happened to him.!’
‘Miles can't know he got unwound and worse than I confessed to him! How would he even feel about that.?!’
‘And I don't even know how Kaydens doing..She could be anywhere right now.!’
Avery was quiet as he panicked in his mind.
Miles seemed to finally know anything around Avery right now was a bad idea to ask about.
“How about we just talk about myself?” He asks.
Avery snaps out of his panicked thoughts when he asks that.
“Sure, that will be fine.” He says.
The waitress brought over some pancakes and coffee like she knew the old man's usual order and she brought two orders for both of them. Avery began to eat his food as he began to talk.
“Ever since you kids left my safe house, I knew it was time for me to retire.” He starts off, “The job was starting to get risky for me and that I should start focusing on my side job more.”
He took a sip of his coffee.
“So I started working on my ranch more because I knew my crops and cattle could last me for a long time.”
“Now at my age I just knew to focus on one thing instead of multiple.”
‘Focus on one thing.’ Avery thought.
‘That's like what I’m doing right now!’
“I’m also focusing on something right now.” He tells Miles.
Miles gives him a confused, but interested look.
“And what's that kid?” He asks.
‘I can tell him a bit about Kayden right now, well all I know.’ He thought.
“I'm trying to find Kayden right now, we were separated and I just want to find her again.” Avery tells him.
Miles' confused look turns to one of shock again.
“Are you crazy kid? Do you even know where she is?” He asks.
“No, but I know I can find her somehow eventually.” He says.
Miles lets out a quiet sigh.
“You two always seemed to stick by each other..”
“Well good luck on finding her..She could be searching for you too.”
Avery quickly eats the rest of his pancakes before standing up.
“Thanks Miles for the food.” He says as begins to walk away.
He stops walking and turns towards him.
“I'll keep searching for her.” Avery tells him with a small grin.
Miles gives him a firm nod and a smile back.
He turns back around and leaves the diner back to his focusing on his goal.
‘I know I can find her, just getting slowly closer day by day.’
