Lucy had spent her entire childhood feeling different, not knowing anyone who had hearing aids or faced the same battles of her. Then suddenly her new parents were getting another child who wore hearing aids but was also able to speak with his hands. Lucy was jealous at first, he seemed so comfortable being hard of hearing, whereas she had never really understood it. Now though Lucy was so incredibly thankful to have him as a brother. Both of them had forgone their hearing aids and were enjoying the chance to fully immerse in ASL. "Honestly I'm not sure, we have to stay in the country so perhaps Florida?" Lucy hadn't really thought the idea through yet, the planning and preparation were yet to come, though they would be intensive.

If Daniel had to be honest, he felt incredibly lucky to have Lucy as a sister. There weren't many people who understood what he'd been thought, what it was like to grow up as a deaf child. While he appreciated Soren learning ASL, there was a particularly different bond between him and Lucy. He was having yet another headache, but luckily, he was able to put down the hearing aids while he and his sister were catching up. "And where exactly are you planning on going?" he signed back, giving her a look. He was never a big vacation guy unless he was going with family, but he grew up to be quite the workaholic. In fact, he was already nervous for taking the day off today.

She laughed loudly as he suddenly double backed on his mention of an iced coffee, "I'm very very gay too so you do not need to worry," she admitted. "I can definitely owe you a coffee," she smiled. "Yeah, I know, constantly feeling like you're on the edge of a cilff." Lucy had felt that feeling herself growing up, always unsure, never even really wanting to unpack. Lucy had gotten quite good at understanding the children that were placed at her, but it was a science rather than an art.
"I did three fosters and a group home," she explained, "but I ended up in the right place." At the time Lucy didn't think she'd ever be grateful for those experiences, but now, all these years later, they were only a small part of her story. "I hope so too." Lucy always attempted to get her children into as many activities as possible but it was hard when they moved on and they left them behind.

"Ah, nobody needs a statue of me. How about an iced coffee instead?" He said with a laugh, then almost immediately questioned his words. Crap. "Um, not in like a date way. I'm so, so gay," he laughed. "I just meant, well... I like coffee. I'd take a coffee over a statue any day." And now he looked like a total idiot because he had over-explained himself. Good job, Jaylen.
"It sucks, to feel like you can just be shipped around at any moment. It's no wonder she doesn't wanna let you in." Funny how Jaylen could see so clearly the difficulties other kids experienced, be there for them and try to help them. When it came to his own problems, though, he was almost thirty years old and still carrying burdens from childhood.
"It took me a while to let my foster mom in. I was lucky, though. Only went to a group home for a bit, then a permanent one." And then the woman who had taken him in, who had been his guiding light, had been taken from him before he even graduated middle school. It wasn't fair. The rest of the family were fine, but he'd always felt like an outsider with them. An extra limb. "I hope wherever she ends up, she lands on her feet, and that they keep bringing her here."

"Oh they're pride of place of course," she laughed, "people need to have their hobbies right." Truth was Lucy didn't have a lot of hobbies, but she did enjoy other things rather than just coffee. "I think they notice a lot more than we give them credit for," she admitted. She'd quickly learnt that even when it appeared a child wasn't listening, they probably were. "Lily and Rosa are both in day camps, different interests though," she explained, "which has given me some semblance of a routine." Lucy often found school holidays difficult to navigate. "We are all going paddle boarding this weekend though, which may be fun and may be entirely disastrous."

Eli couldn't help but laugh as he knew all too well when kids had no limits or filters. "Kids doing the darndest things," he chuckled. "What did you do? Laugh it off? Put it up on the fridge? I swear my kid is incredibly perceptive that sometimes I think god damn." For it being a slightly less hot day in Texas, he opted for a cold brew. Something he had always hated but somehow never learned to not get. "So, on this rare day my schedule is not littered with adventures. What have you been up to, other than the caffeine intake. Anything new with Lily? Summer activities?"

"When that happens we may need to get you a statue or something," she smirked. Lucy never pressured the kids, it was all about going at their own speed. She was often the first place they ended up, or the place they landed where something went wrong along the way. She was the emergency placement person, so the children placed with her often needed a lot of support. "She's not eligible for adoption, they're just looking for a longer term foster situation for her," she explained, "but I have no idea how long that'll be." Lucy treated every child like they would be hers forever, even though she knew they wouldn't be.
Tumblr media
Children passed through Lucy's home at varying speeds, some staying for only a few nights, and others for a few months, depending on what they needed. Rosa was proving herself to be a particularly difficult case, but for Lucy that just meant she needed to work harder. She was quiet and withdrawn but recently Lucy had got her involved in some programs and she was beginning to seem a little more comfortable. She was at home on the dance floor and in the pool and that was beginning to show. Lucy smiled as Jaylen spoke about Rosa, "thanks, more than three?" she asked surprised, "you deserve a trophy." Lucy smiled softly, she was always proud when her children made progress. "Yeah, she's definitely seeming more settled, I think she's starting to trust a little bit more too."

Milo made Lucy feel instantly comfortable, which wasn't the case for a lot of people. "Two hours is incredible," she said, in true amazement. She grinned at the compliment though, always appreciating a compliment, especially when she knew that there was no alterior motive. "But I am closer to 40 than 30 so I assure you, this is needed," she gestured to her face. Lucy wasn't wearing a lot of makeup, but she had on her everyday foundation, mascara and lipstick. "I think the wigs would be my favourite part," she admitted with a smile.

Milo liked hanging out with Lucy. She was relaxed and sweet, and he thought she was pretty. Milo was very much not attracted to women at all, but he simply appreciated a beautiful woman, who wouldn't? He pondered her question. "Hmm, I mean it can take me up to two hours to fully get into drag. I've gotten it down to a science, but when I was first starting out, it could take three hours." He sipped on his smoothie. "You don't need that hour, you're gorgeous as is my love. I totally get wanting to wear it though. It can be fun."

Who: @magsdeveaux Where: Dance studio
Lucy gave her new placements time to settle but then she made a concious effort to find activities for them, either things that they've done previously to add some normality to their routine or new experiences that they hadn't had the opportunity to do before. Lucy had had Rosa 3 weeks before she learned about the girl's love of dance, almost accidentally. Rosa had moved in withdrawn and quiet, keen to just spend time by herself, and rarely talking to anyone. However she'd now been with Lucy a few months and she was starting to emerge from her shell. Dance had been a key part of that, and Lucy was very thankful for Maggie. Rosa was getting changed after class whilst they talked. "Thank you for everything you've done, Rosa has seemed so much happier since she started classes here."

Who: @danmolinahsu Where: Mom's House
Her mom's bringing Daniel home had changed Lucy's life far more than she'd anticipated. Sure, having another brother was a big change in itself but he had opened her up to a whole world. Before the Molina-Hsus Lucy had just been treated like she could hear, as if the hearing aids in her ears fixed everything. Then Daniel arrived, using ASL effortlessly and Lucy became immersed in a world of talking through her hands. She was able to take her hearing aids out at home and embrace the person she was born as. She sat in the living room of their childhood home, her legs crossed on the couch. Mom was out and Mama was cooking in the kitchen with Lily, leaving the two to chat. "I've decided I need a vacation this summer, you in?" she signed.

Who: @sara-iyer Where: Community Centre
Lucy had been volunteering at the community centre for years on a range of projects but recently she had begun helping out on their front desk. Customer service didn't come naturally to Lucy but she was getting better, and it was a useful skill for her to develop. She smiled as Sara walked into the centre, Lucy knew most people in town and there was no way she could ignore a face as pretty as Sara's. "Morning," she smiled, "how can I help you today?" Lucy found herself operating on a bit of a script when she worked the desk.

Who: @azrademirci Where: Azra's front door
Lucy held a box of cookies in her hand as she knocked on Azra's front door. The two had been neighbours for a while and they had relatively regular chats on the stoop or on the street but Lucy wouldn't say that they were friends, yet. She waited for the door to be opened and then smiled. "So, I've come bearing apology cookies, because Lily has decided to take up the cornet, and she is bad at it." Lucy always liked to give her foster placements opportunities that they hadn't had previously, sometimes that meant swimming lessons or dance class but sometimes that meant a five year old playing a musical instrument terribly because they'd seen a video of someone on the internet.

Who: @carmxchaels Where: Blackstone Brews
Most people drained Lucy's social battery but with Eli it was different. Eli was one of the few people who was easy for Lucy to be around, she felt comfortable around him. It had all started when Lucy first moved to Blackstone, she'd been beginning to learn ASL and Eli instantly wanted to learn too, so they'd learnt side by side. He was kind and caring and allowed Lucy to feel like she didn't need to put on an act around him, in a time where everything was new and scary, he felt safe. Now it was many years later and they were still thick as thieves. "So, Lily called me out on my caffeine intake yesterday," she admitted, citing her 5 year old foster child, "she drew a few different pictures of me and I'm holding a coffee cup in every single one."

Starter For: @lucyfranklin Location: Community Center
One of the things Jaylen still loved to do in his free time was volunteer at the local community center. One of the people he'd been seeing for years was Lucy. They'd chatted, and while Jaylen wasn't always entirely open, Lucy, on the other hand, was happy to talk about her past. Over time, she'd got Jaylen to open up a little, too. A few years here and there between foster kids turned adopted kids turned whatever the hell they were right now.
"You know, I don't say nice things a lot," Jaylen said, and it was the truth, with an exception; when it came to the kids in the youth programmes or the people putting effort into the activities Jaylen was participating in, he was encouraging. The kids had just finished up a swimming lesson, so they were in the locker rooms, showering the chlorine off and changing clothes, which gave the pair a chance to chat. "But you're doing good with her. Rosa is really coming out of her shell since coming here. I think I actually got more than three words out of her today. Progress, right? Has she seemed different at home?"

Who: @milogalvez Where: Smooth(ie) Serenity
Milo and Lucy had met at a drag show, the first time Milo had been in the audience, the second time he'd been on the stage. Lucy could relate in some ways to having two different personalities, often it felt like there were two Lucys, the one everyone else saw, and the one she saw in herself. Over time the two had become not quite friends (yet) but closer than just neighbours. Today they were out for a smoothie. "Okay, so the real questino is, how long does it take you to drag up?" she asked, "because I am so shit at makeup that it takes me almost an hour to just get regular ready."

Who: @carolineweav Where: The Park
For the past month Lucy had been looking after a very energetic five year old called Lily. It had been a bit of a turbulent start but they were starting to get into a groove, and that groove included twice daily trips to the park to help Lily stay regulated. Those park trips had begun to accidently include a friend who Lily had become quite attached to. As they approached the park Lily started running, spotting her new friend in the distance and screaming out their name as they approached. Lucy chuckled to herself before heading over to the bench where Caroline sat watching, "sorry, she's especially full of energy this morning," she admitted.

CHARACTER - BASICS
Name: Lucy Faceclaim: Brianne Howey Age / Birthday: 36 / May 12th 1989 Gender / Pronouns: CisFemale She/Her Hometown: Tampa Florida Occupation: Programmer District of Residence: Avondale Meadows Time in Blackstone Ridge: 21 years Are you Filling a Wanted Connection? Yes. Soren's Adopted Sister
CHARACTER - BACKGROUND
What is the one place your muse feels most at home, and what does this place mean to them?
Lucy is at home anywhere with a computer or a tablet. When she's coding she feels at peace in a way that she can't really describe, it just feels right. It's been her constant since she got her first computer when she was 10, when she moved from place to place the rooms changed, the houses changed, as did the schools, but the code stayed the same.
What is your muse’s relationship with their family like?
When it comes to family Lucy has a few different 'folders' of families. She has her birth family, who are really just names on a piece of paper. Then there are her various foster families, most are just memories but the Clines will always be part of her family. She considers them grandparents and they are always checking up on her, no matter where she's moved to. Then there is her official family, the ones that took her in and completed all the paperwork. With them her relationship is everything she ever wanted from a family. They care for each other and love each other to death but they are also honest with one another and will always be there for one another, with a shoulder to cry on and some good advice. It's unconditional love, something that for many years was quite unknown to Lucy.
Does your muse struggle to admit when they make a mistake, or are they quick to own up to it? Does it matter who they’re admitting it to, or how big the mistake is?
Lucy has a tendency to overthink almost every decision and every thing she says almost immediately after she does it. Growing up she assumed it was some kind of anxiety but later on she figured out it was a result of her Autism, social interactions were't natural, so she was thinking through every moment, every word. She also finds it hard to comprehend how others are feeling, so she often misconstrues their reactions. When it comes to mistakes Lucy will definitely admit when she's made them, though that sometimes come with a little defense. She oddly finds it harder to admit her mistakes to people closer to her.
What is the coolest place your muse has traveled to? If they’ve never traveled far, what’s one place they hope to visit someday?
Lucy has travelled to a lot of places. When the cheque first came in from the sale of her company she went off on a 6 month travelling adventure. She absolutely loved Thailand, and if she was going to live in any other country she'd go there. Thing is she's too much of a family person to ever be that far away for that long. She also adored Switzerland and Greece.
CHARACTER - FULL BACKSTORY
Lucy Meadow Franklin didn't come into the world loudly, in fact she slipped into the world quietly, too quietly. Lucy was very premature and she was immediately whisked off to the intensive care unit and put on a ventilator. Her lungs were not fully developed, she had heart problems and she couldn't breathe on her own. Her mother was only 15 and she was already struggling to wrap her head around being a mother, but the idea of being a mother to a medically complex child was not something she had the mental capacity or money to do so she left the hospital without her daughter.
The doctors worked to help her lungs to grow and she had heart surgery to correct her PDA. She was put into the foster care system but the nurses looking after her spent their breaks with her, holding her when she was strong enough to come out of the incubator.
She was finally dischanged from the hospital when she was four months old and moved into a foster placement that were specialised in dealing with medically complex newborns, it was never meant to be a forever home, but they cared for Lucy in every way. She was five months old when she was diagnosed with hearing loss, making her officially hard of hearing, adding to the list of things that made her hard to place when it came to adoption.
Not long after her first birthday she was moved into her second foster placement because another newborn needed her current space. They were an older couple whose children had grown up and flown the nest. She was doted on and spoilt and treated like their own grandchild, but it was never meant to last forever, they couldn't give her that.
Lucy knew that she was different to other children, she didn't have a mom or a dad, she had a scar on her chest from her heart surgery and hearing aids adorned her ears, but she never let that slow her down. Learning seemed to come naturally to Lucy, she picked up new information quickly and always wanted to learn more. She did well across the board but it was in math that she really shone.
She was seven when she moved onto her next foster placement. It was a bit of a wake up call as she was one of five kids, squeezed into a box room. She was used to being an only chlid, but now suddenly she had to share and make space for lots of other people. Her needs were not a priority and she quickly learnt to stay quiet and just get on with it.
At the age of 10 she was moved into a group home. Her old foster parents lost their licence and no one was queuing to take in a relatively anti-social pre-teen year old. It was in this placement though that she got regular access to a computer, so putting up with a room-mate was worth it. It worked for Lucy for the most part, she was just a number, she could do what she wanted and no-one really cared. However her anxiety seemed to get worse and her repetitive behaviours (that would later be recognised as stims) became more obvious.
Her medical needs and her hearing loss made her hard to place her whole life and as she got older her age became a factor too. No one wanted to take in a teenager, much less one who couldn't hear that well and had to have regular checkups on her heart. She'd resigned herself to being a foster child her whole life but her social worker wasn't too keen on that idea, so she kept looking until she found the perfect family.
She was 14 when she was adopted by the Molina-Hsus. It took some time to aclimatise, she didn't really know what it meant to have parents. She found their caring to be suffocating and quickly got fed up with their questions. The Molina-Hsus however brought a lot of normality to her life and also introduced her to ASL. Before that Lucy had been treated like a hearing child, but they taught her to embrace her deafness too, it was an important part of her identity.
In school Lucy continued to flourish and she became very interested in computers. It wasn't long before she knew more about computers than her teachers did, and she always wanted to learn more. She was lucky to have access to a computer and internet at home and her parents had to peel her off of it.
She graduated top of her class and headed to MIT to study computer science. Whilst at college Lucy and her friends created their own company and developed something called 'scan'. A few years later the technology was purchased by Snapchat for $54 million. Lucy suddenly became a 25 year old with more money than she knew what to do with so she got herself a financial advisor and invested most of it into other tech companies.
Now Lucy is able to follow her passion projects, designing and programming things to help people rather than just make money. Three years ago she became a foster carer, wanting to help children the way that her foster parents did for her. She often gets placed with children who need additional support, whether they have medical needs or special education needs. She absolutely loves it and the hearbreak of handing them back is worthwhile when she knows that they are moving onto bigger and better things.
Lucy was diagnosed as Autistic when she was thirty-one, things clicking into place with a piece of paper. She'd never find socialising easy and she thought through every conversation, before and after it happened. Many people around her were surprised, in their words she seemed so 'normal' but she'd spent her whole life masking. Now she's beginning to unmask and the real Lucy is starting to come out.
Wanted Connections:
Friends: Lucy can be a bit much at first. She tends to be quite loud and commanding and doesn't notice all social cues. It would be nice to have some people that have gotten through that.
Childhood Friends: She's been here since she was 14ish so childhood friends would be nice.
Exes: Lucy is gay as fuck so some female exes would be fun.
Maybe something?: Lucy is a terrible flirt but it'd be nice to have something going on, a will they/won't they kind of thing.on
