I love how unabashedly emotional and talkative “Hikaru” is. He cries watching a movie and isn’t even a tiny bit embarrassed about it. Hell, he probably wouldn’t understand why anyone may expect him to be embarrassed about expressing his honest feelings. When talking with Yoshiki, he just tells him everything, explains himself to the best of his ability – always candid, often confused, but never pretending or hiding anything. He eats some yummy food and gets so excited over it. He may appear childish because of that, but the truth is more complicated: he has no concept of stilted social expectations; but he does have that innate curiosity and love for the world and all its experiences. His inherent qualities haven’t been quashed by outside pressure. There’s no need to mask anything.
(In stark contrast to Yoshiki, who has already learnt the painful lesson of having to repress and hide a lot of who he is; he admits he loves how he can just be himself around “Hikaru”, because “Hikaru” doesn’t judge, has no notion of what’s “proper” or “acceptable”.)
And the best part is, we never see anyone shame “Hikaru” for this. People around him may be surprised or even perceive him as childish, but no one ever tells him to shut up or to act more mature. He doesn’t get labelled as “unmanly” or “effeminate” because of these qualities either (which, I imagine, would easily happen in the real world to a sixteen year old boy). At most, it makes people more protective of him (especially Yoshiki). Other kids mention he (or, probably, the original Hikaru) once fainted after watching a horror movie, but even that’s delivered as a neutral statement or maybe gentle teasing rather than biting ridicule.
For all we know, “Hikaru” is an extremely powerful, inhuman eldritch entity, and yet he’s the most genuine and emotional of all the characters. (That alone speaks volumes to me.) He rambles, laughs and cries and no one challenges him for that. To see it pictured this way is just so, so refreshing.

I haven’t seen the HTTYD remake yet but it’s hilarious to me how John Powell wasn’t allowed to use the same track names so he just decided to be a troll.

One of my favourite things about the first book is that Murderbot looked at Gurathin and saw that hey, people can be introverted unsociable untrusting snarky assholes and still have strong social bonds and people who care about them, and then hated him so, so much

Didn't pay a lot of attention to this the first time through but "Hikaru's" reading choices here say a lot.
The Little Mermaid, Frankenstein, and The Grateful Crane, stories about non-human creatures and their attempts to live as humans. Failed attempts. This is certainly informing his conversation with Yoshiki at the beach later on. That and uh...his increasing inability to restrain himself from trying to eat his soul. The Grateful Crane is one of the Japanese versions of the worldwide "supernatural spouse" stories. You know the ones. Where a supernatural lady marries a man but tells him there's a door or a chest he must never open. Or maybe he should never remove the ribbon from her neck. Or observe her engaged in a particular activity. He never listens and when he finds out her secret she returns to her world of being an animal or spirit. Of course, whole dissertations have been written about The Little Mermaid and Hans Christian Andersen and queer subtext. And the whole thing with Frankenstein's monster is how he's lonely and despised by humanity and just wants a companion. I also find it funny that they seem to be picture book or abridged versions so uh...maybe "Hikaru's" reading level is not very high. :D

I have no picture but I’m really fond of the way the manga cover colours of the Summer Hikaru died seem to emulate a sunset. Starting at a bright blue summer day and shifting into complete black. It’s a neat detail I think ties nicely into the themes of grief and acceptance.
#i may however be reading too much into this#i just enjoy picking design choices apart#tshd#the summer hikaru died#tshd manga

Oh my god, someone finally say it. Whenever I draw this stuff (because obviously my mind is obsessed and I’m coping through fanart) I keep thinking about cell division and those diagrams of cell organells.
Guys, every time I see 'Hikaru' distorting, what pops into mind is,
brace yourselves
"Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell"
But seriously, the distortion looks like a bunch of bacteria under a microscope. I fucking love it
It reminds me of biology every single time, it just looks RIGHT to be leaking out of him.
why does there have to be that weird eye though
Freaky eugh

Throwback to the time my brain kept distracting me during a very important anorganic chemistry exam by repeatedly playing the fullmetal alchemist opening
being able to play songs in your head is cool and all but not really if you can't control what and when it plays so this is a visualization of me trying to concentrate while angel of music plays in my head

This bonus comic from ch. 25 kills me, and it took forever for me to find it when I needed to reference something from it so I'm putting it here.
Just from this snippet, I've learned that Yoshiki has a tendency to:
Call people dumb for making mistakes on their school work
Deflect even simple explanations in an effort to maintain his privacy
Pretend to like something to spare peoples feelings
Boss Hikaru(?)/'Hikaru' around (wtf dude! wash your hands seriously)
Over think things and spiral into depression (which is a hassle to deal with for 'Hikaru')
Argue as both a hobby and spectator sport
Shave his patchy teenage beard
Absolutely rich with incredible content here. 10/10 bonus comic.

This is exactly the discourse I come to tumblr for.
Oh my god what do yall think Laios would think about eating "Hikaru"? He did say he's not interested in spirits but I don't think Hikaru is exactly a spirit.
