✈ World War II - Avro Lancaster Bomber!!!!!!!!!!!! The Avro Lancaster originated with the design of the old Avro Manchester. Responding to the specification of the Air Ministry which required a medium bomber capable of being used in all environments, Avro created the twin-engine Manchester in the late 1930s. Similar in appearance to its later cousin, Manchester used the new Roll-Royce Vulture engine. First flying in July 1939, the type was promising, but the vulture's engines proved to be highly reliable. As a result, only 200 Manchesters were built and were retired from service in 1942. As the Manchester program was struggling, Avro Roy Chadwick's design boss began working on an improved four-engine aircraft. Nicknamed the Avro Type 683 Manchester III, Chadwick's new design utilized the most reliable Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and the largest wing. Known as "Lancaster," development progressed rapidly when the Royal Air Force was hired in World War II. The Lancaster was similar to its predecessor in that it was a cantilever monoplane of average wing, with a type of greenhouse awning, a turret nose and a configuration of double tail. Built with all-metal construction, Lancaster required a crew of seven: pilot, flight engineer, bomber, radio operator, navigator and two gunners. For protection, the Lancaster carried eight .30 cal. Machine guns mounted on three turrets (nose, dorsal and tail). Early models also featured a ventral turret but these were removed because they were difficult to site. With a huge bay of bombs 33 feet long, the Lancaster was capable of carrying a load of up to 14,000 pounds. As the work progressed, the prototype was assembled at Manchester's Ringway Airport.

✈ Focke-Wulf Fw 190 German!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In 1937, Germany's Reich Air Ministry sought designs for a new fighter to replace its first generation of monoplane interceptors, worried that future Allied designs might outperform it. The result was the Fw 190, which immediately proved to be superior to the British Spitfire. The Fw 190 was also more heavily armed, carrying four 20 mm cannons in addition to two 13 mm machine guns. Some later versions featured a 30 mm cannon that fired through the propeller hub. With its high kill rate, the Fw 190 lived up to its name of "Würger" or "Butcher Bird." It entered service in March of 1945 and served with the JG (Jagdgeschwader) 26 wing, with Major Franz Götz as the plane's pilot and the wing's commodore. This airplane has been restored close to flyable condition, but it will not be flown because it is such a rare example of the Fw 190 line.
