It’s your special day, friend! I hope that it has been full of lots of cake, love, happiness, music, and all of the things that you love. I know that you’ve got some big things going on in your life right now, and I hope that means your birthday is even more special this time around the sun. You deserve it, and so much more!

Obviously, I had to make sure that you got a card with a musical theme to it – how could I not?! And then, of course, a candle that smells like leather… masculine, you know. (I’m kidding, I actually thought that it smells like a guitar case, and if anyone was going to appreciate that… it’s you.) The bracelet is hammered piano string, and again, music? Check. After all, you are one of the most musical friends that I have!

Let’s do a night out sometime soon, whether it’s for drinks, or dinner, I’m sure that we can fit it in, either before the trip, during, or after if you’re planning on going. And I hope that your special day was as special as you!

Let’s be honest, most of the time we all forget to reapply it, especially when you’re in the water because you don’t feel the burn on your skin so you don’t have any reminder of what you need to do. I’m glad aloe was there to save you! I listened to it yesterday, it’s so good, congratulations! I’m looking forward to the album, now.

It’s the worst when you’re in the water. Because not only do you not really notice it, the sun also reflects off the water and burns you. Luckily I’ve been reapplying every so often since I’ve been out to the beach since then. I refuse to relive that type of hell. Thank you, that means a lot! I’m both nervous and excited to get this album out into the world. I am still working on the next album with the band, which has been my distraction when it comes to the nerves. But I have faith everything will go smoothly. It’s just different when it’s a solo project. And especially this is my first one.

Look, if you can make an entire album on your own, I’m sure you’ll be amazing at producing movies. Congratulations, by the way! The first song you just released is so good, I love it. My mom used to do that, too. I know they don’t think about that when they come wake us up to talk but that just ends up being super confusing for us. 

But they’re two completely different things. I can make music for movies. But producing a movie by myself? I have no idea what I’m doing or where to even start there. Thank you! It was nerve wracking putting it out there, but I’m happy that everyone seems to be enjoying it. Now I’m nervous about the whole album’s release. Oh they definitely have no idea how confusing it can be. And of course my mom would think I was an idiot when I would come out hours later, asking if she had actually said this or if I dreamt about it.

I’m glad you’ve learned your lesson. Sometimes we all just have to learn the hard way, unfortunately. I’m excited to hear it! You know if you ever want to give me a sneak peak on whatever the band is working on, I definitely won’t say no. Also, congratulations on the announcement of your solo stuff as well! Even just from the first song I just know that the rest of it is going to be great. I’ve listened to it on repeat a few times now. My schedule is free, actually. I’d love to head out to the beach with you and Petunia! It would be nice to catch up since it has been a while. Since moving here I’ve really taken some time to just lay low and relax, but I think I’m ready to stop being a hermit and get out there and socialize. 

Tell me about it. I’m sure at some point again in my life, I’ll take sunscreen for granted and end up regretting my life choices all over again. But so far, I’ve been good at reapplying and haven’t burned since. I have gotten a bit of a tan though. I was just going to say, I have a new solo single out but clearly you’ve already heard that news. I’m happy that you’ve heard it and enjoyed it enough to play it a few times. I had the best time at the beach with you. I know Petunia definitely loved hanging out and becoming best friends with you. I know what you mean about being a hermit. I feel like I’ve locked myself away in the studio working on everything, that I kind of forgot to step out into the outside world in the middle of it. I’m getting better at it though. I’ve been getting my ass out of the house and going on daily walks at least.

Oh, you’re a little star. The boys will be so excited, thank you. Are you doing anything nice for the 4th July weekend? I’ve got the younger ones coming home for it so am making loads of tasty treats. This is going to so silly but when they were younger they always loved it were we would use food colouring to make the food patriotic.

I was over at the beach during that weekend. I hopped around all over the place, since I kept running into friends of mine and hanging out with them. I feel like a lot of people do that with foods to make them more festive for specific holidays!

To each their own cup of tea, right? You’re Australian, though… just like Hemsworth and Margot, you’re all beach lovers pretty much because you had no other choice! I’m all about the mountain and the freezing cold temperatures, ‘cause I’m from Boston— a northeast type of guy. I’ve been just dandy, man, thank you! Spent my birthday stuffing my face with cake pops and ice cream like my life depended on it, so it felt good turning forty this year. Is this music for your band or is it your own? Regardless, I’m sure it’ll be sick.

I am! I mean, I did always spend a lot of time on the beach back when I lived there. I feel like it’s just embedded in me to love the beach. The mountains are beautiful too though. I’ve adapted more to the cold since moving to Bayview. But I still need to bundle up in layers, otherwise I just complain and wish I were back in Australia. That’s exactly how you need to spend your birthday. Today is actually my birthday, so I headed down to Sweet Tooth and grabbed a bunch of birthday treats, cake pops included. Well I do have a solo album coming out that I just released a single for. But the band is also working on new music too. So I’ve been juggling both projects at once.

I think that is probably how most people feel whether it’s a song coming to life or a piece of art. It’s all great to see an idea take shape. There is a bit of tunnel vision that happens sometimes when you’re really working hard at something.  I think that when you have the right vibes going you don’t want to end that.   I’m glad that things have really gone well for you and that you’re all healed up. You’ll definitely have to be more cautious on your next adventure.

That’s how I felt working on my solo album, honestly. It was a cool experience doing it all on my own and seeing it come together. Although I’ll always prefer having the creative input of my band members on our albums together. Don’t worry, I’ve learned my lesson. When I was out on the beach for the 4th of July, I made sure to keep reapplying every couple of hours. How have you been? Up to anything fun lately?

Starting Line was written in one stream of thought at my friend Sammy’s house. The lyrics come from a reflection of 10 years of my life passing me by in what felt like forever but also in the blink of an eye.

That’s a nice added bonus, you don’t have to worry about her missing out on all of the beach fun, and it’s always nice to have a little canine companion with you when you’re out doing something that you love to do, that’s true. I can imagine, otherwise you’d be dealing with sand all over the house, not to mention that wet dog smell plus add in a splash of ocean, on top of everything else. Okay, yeah, I like the idea of you being a photo bomber in one of the funniest ways possible, is it bad if I actually hope that’s a thing? Ah, good! Good, always make sure that you have a decent supply on hand, then.

She’s the perfect beach buddy. Plus it’s good for her to get out and run around on the beach every once in a while. Yeah, that’s why I only take her sometimes. Because the sand, wet dog smell, and just all the smells from the beach in general are just too much to deal with on a more frequent basis. I always wonder how many pictures I’m in the background in that I’ll never know about. And the thing that really haunts me is, what am I doing in those pictures? Am I making a weird face? Or falling? These are the things that keep me awake at night.

The timer is a good idea. I feel like so many apps are addicting. It’s really hard to limit yourself to stay there on like 15 minutes because once you’re on it, you don’t even pay attention to the clock anymore. That’s the thing, by the time we get interested, it’s already over. And I mean, it’s great to be curious about new things but sometimes it feels good to stick to your favorite old things, too. I see. I just wonder why people invented a new word when ‘throw’ was already working fine. I agree, Urban Dictionary is both useful and scary.

Oh I know what you mean. 15 minutes is nothing in TikTok time. You need to aimlessly scroll for at least an hour as you relax and unwind in bed at the end of the day. I know what you mean. What we don’t know, can’t hurt us. I’ll stay in my bubble of things that I know and like. I feel like “yeet” is pretty catchy and I’ve caught myself saying it a few times. But mainly just when joking around with my friends and never in an actually serious sense.

I’m happy to hear that. Don’t need you getting more serious issues from lack of sunscreen. How close are we to music? I’ve been a little busy bee, launching my new skincare brand. 

Well I did just announce my solo album and released the first single from that. So that should hold you over until my album drops, along with whenever we finish up the band’s new album. There’s lots of content coming your way, so don’t worry. Look at you go!

right? i feel we would have a great time bonding while smashing things. i mean, what brings people closer than the urge to absolutely destroy objects around them? i don’t know. a little over a year? oh wow, you’ve been here a long, long time i see. that’s cool. so yes, i’d love to hang out and explore town with an expert.

Exactly. There’s nothing like bonding while smashing things together. That’s how the best friendships are formed, obviously. I haven’t been here as long as some people, but I certainly have learned my way around town in the time I’ve been here. So if you ever need a tour guide or someone to suggest a place, I’m your guy. Are you going to the fireworks on Sunday? Because if so, we can meet up there and hang out if you’d like.

I for one can’t wait for all the new music this town is creating, it’s like a bunch of mad musical scientist live in this town and I am not mad at it at all. Plus that means I can surprise my fans with more covers that aren’t half as good as the original. Always apply your sunscreen! That’s a must in the sun. 

Well I do have a solo album coming out and I just released the first single from that. So that will hold you over until my album releases and we finish up the 5SOS album. I would honestly love to hear any covers you do. Not just of any of my songs, just covers in general. I know, I know. I’ve learned my lesson. I need to set some kind of reminder to reapply every couple of hours.
