What happens when you try to write a war fiction directed to a YA fantasy audience looking for a textbook villain and a protagonist who’s actual power is plot armor.

leigh bardugo’s seemingly nonexistent grasp of military and government structures, basic politics, and real world oppression is honestly bewildering. like sometimes I’ll read a part of shadow and bone and have to literally stop and recollect my braincells. truly what an unparalleled experience.

I’m reading if we were villains and so far James reminds me so much of Laurent it’s so weird. He is literally how I picture Laurent would be as an art student in our era.

I believe in those two more than anything

So I've seen some people talking about how Damen and Laurent are doomed, how they won't be able to overcome their trauma/age gap/culture gap together, nor abolish slavery/integrate the two cultures/ get political traction.

And yes, by all means if you vibe with this idea you all do you, this is a beautifully tragic idea with a lot of juicy merit. Realistically, they would probably fall apart, drift back into old habits, or start hating each other again.

BUT

In my own mind, I need them to win. I can't accept anything else because of the fact that their love and their ideals defy the odds. They are a tale of impossible love made possible, of the hope that entrenched societal norms can be over turned, the idea that personal change is possible and healthy in ourselves, and that highly devise and even hateful types of Othering can be healed.

And I believe Damen and Laurent can do that, I've got to, so maybe I can believe that all of that's possible for us.

The romance sub-plot we should have had but alas.

Nikolai's demon acts like an overgrown cat around the Darkling, because it came from his power and like calls to like.

The Darkling likes to be around Nikolai's demon, because it's his unique creation.

Nikolai doesn't enjoy Aleksander's company at all, they're too different for it.

Aleksander doesn't like to pet the creature because it's one of few living beings openly affectionate with him.

At least that's what they keep telling themselves, when they wake up next to each other once too often.

The fact that Grisha in Ravka were still looked down and used as “entertainment” in the court says a lot about the bs Aleksander had to put up with during his long miserable existence.

Those same Grisha are being cut open like experimental rats and burned (exploited like slaves too) south and north of Ravka.

Not to forget whatever capitalistic shits Kerch is doing and The wandering isles being a country sized cult. (Pretty sure Novyi Zem isn’t that good either)

Now let’s remember that Alina, a young lady, with little training managed to cut a mountain with her powers. I wonder what 700 years of training could make a person do.

Point is, destroying Novokribirsk (as sad as that sounds) wasn’t the worst he could have done giving the circumstances.
